NEWPORT NEWS, Va. — The Washington and Lee men's basketball team was outscored, 34-18, in the second half en route to a 70-52 loss at Christopher Newport on Tuesday.
The Generals (1-1) were trailing 43-37 early in the second half but back-to-back layups by first-year forward Roy McMillan (Raleigh, N.C./Broughton) and senior forward Andrew Franz (Charlotte, N.C./Ravenscroft) trimmed the deficit to 43-41 with 14:44 on the clock.
Over the next 10:02 of game action, the Captains (2-0) went on a 21-5 run, highlighted by six points by sophomore guard Marcus Carter and six points by junior guard Rayshard Brown, to stretch the lead to 64-46 with 4:12 left in the game. Each team scored six points in the last four minutes to reach the final margin.
The Blue and White shot just 30.8 percent (8-of-26) in the second half, after making 12-of-23 (52.2 percent) shots in the opening stanza. For the game, W&L also turned the ball over 18 times, which led to 21 points for CNU.
Christopher Newport finished the game 28-of-57 (49.1 percent) from the floor and held a 39-27 edge in rebounds. Carter led the Captains with 20 points on 8-of-11 shooting from the floor. He also had five rebounds, three assists and three steals.
Sophomore forwards Clayton Murtha (Dallas, Texas/Highland Park) and Nicholas George (Charleston, W. Va./Charleston Catholic) each tallied a team-high 12 points. Franz notched five rebounds, four assists and four points.
The Generals return to action on Friday at the Gettsyburg Tournament. W&L will play Rutgers-Newark at 8:00 pm.
