GRANVILLE, Ohio — Denison scored 2:01 into overtime to earn a 1-0 victory over the Washington and Lee field hockey team on Sunday at Piper Stadium.

The two teams played the full 60 minutes of regulation without a goal being put on the board. From the opening whistle of overtime, The Big Red (3-1) controlled possession, earning three penalty corners in the first two minutes.

On the third corner, the Big Red inserted the ball to the top right of the circle. Junior forward Charlotte Godfrey fired a shot toward the cage that was deflected by a Generals' (1-3) defender. Off the deflection, the ball hopped over sophomore goalkeeper Sara Amil (North Caldwell, N.J./West Essex), and first-year forward Madeleine Hunt was right at the cage to tap it across the line for the game-winning tally.

Denison held a 17-2 advantage in shots for the contest and led in penalty corners, 9-1. Amil was credited with six saves in the contest, but made numerous other plays and deflections that prevented the Big Red from scoring over the course of the game. Junior Teya Adams played the full game in goal for Denison and stopped two shots.

The Generals had their best look at scoring at the end of the fourth quarter. On a counter attack with under 20 seconds on the clock, the ball was passed down to the far right corner on the offensive end.

A long ball was then sent into Adams. She tried to kick the ball away on the right side, but sophomore forward Grace Weise (Bryn Mawr, Pa./Agnes Irwin School) was there and immediately redirected it back at the cage. Adams saved the shot with under two seconds left in regulation to force the contest to overtime.

The Generals return to action on Saturday, when they host Dickinson on Saturday at 12:00 pm.
