W&L CROSS COUNTRY FAIRS WELL IN NCAA SOUTHEAST REGIONAL (11/13)

SEWANEE, Tenn. -- W&L's men's and women's cross country teams competed in the NCAA Southeast Regional meet in Sewanee, Tenn. on Saturday. The women placed sixth of 16 teams, while the men were ninth of 19 teams.

Two harriers earned all-region honors for the women as freshman Burke Duncan (Oklahoma City, Okla./Casady) finished in 22nd place with a time of 20:13 and junior Kathleen Moroney (Hampton Bays, N.Y./Hampton Bays) finished in 25th place with a time of 20:23. Senior Ashley Davis (Houston, Texas/Mirabeau B. Lamar) finished in 43rd place (21:11). There were 116 competitors in the women's competition.

For the men, sophomore Rob Naftel (Birmingham, Ala./Mountain Brook) earned all-region honors by finishing 20th with a time of 27:47. Fellow classmate Ken Jackman (Wyckoff, N.J./Ramapo) finished in 27th place with a time of 28:02 and freshman Will Teichman (High Point, N.C./T. Wingate Andrews) was 48th overall (28:42). A total of 127 competed in the men's event.

The meet ended the Generals' cross country season.

W&L WOMEN'S CROSS COUNTRY WINS ODAC CHAMPIONSHIP, MEN PLACE FOURTH (10/30)

BRIDGEWATER, Va. -- The Washington and Lee women's cross country team claimed the ODAC Championship, while the menÕs team placed fourth of seven teams in the ODAC Championships held at Bridgewater College.

Freshman Burke Duncan (Oklahoma City, Okla./Casady) led the women's squad by placing third of 54 competitors with a time of 20:01. Junior Kathleen Moroney (Hampton Bays, N.Y./Hampton Bays) placed fifth overall with a time of 20:16 and senior Ashley Davis (Houston, Texas/Mirabeau B. Lamar) and junior Jessica Parillo (Titusville, N.J./Hopewell Valley Central) rounded out the Top 10 with ninth and 10th place finishes, respectively. Davis crossed the tape at 20:57 and Parrillo finished with a time of 20:59. Five teams competed for the women's championship.

On the men's side, W&L was led by sophomore Rob Naftel (Birmingham, Ala./Mountain Brook), who placed sixth of 58 harriers with a time of 27:06. Finishing second among the Generals was sophomore Ken Jackman (Wyckoff, N.J./Ramapo). Jackman crossed the tape in 11th place with a time of 27:41. Senior Frank Stearns (Purcellville, Va./Loudoun Valley) finished 19th with a time of 28:31.

The Generals will run again in the NCAA East Regional Championships held November 13th.

W&L HARRIERS SWEEP GENERALS INVITATIONAL (10/16)

The Washington and Lee cross country teams hosted the Generals Invitational on Saturday, bringing home meet championships in both men's and women's action. The W&L women compiled a team total of 34 points while the men won their meet with a score of 35.

For the women's squad, freshman Burke Duncan (Oklahoma City, Okla./Casady School) led the Generals with a fourth place finish, crossing the finish line in a time of 20:51. Juniors Kathleen Moroney (Hampton Bays, N.Y./Hampton Bays) and Wendy Case (Cumberland Foreside, Maine/Greely) followed Duncan closely, finishing in fifth and sixth places with times of 21:10 and 21:22, respectively. Rounding out the top five for W&L were junior Jessica Parillo (Titusville, N.J./Hopewell Valley Central ) in 10th place with a time of 21:45, and freshman Jennifer Fallon (Boerne, Texas/Boerne) in 14th place with a time 22:08. The meet was won by Andrea Good, a freshman from Eastern Mennonite, who finished in a time of 20:31. In the team competition, Eastern Mennonite finished second with 41 points, Bridgewater placed third with 66 points, Southern Virginia took home fourth place with 86 points, and Roanoke was unable to field a full squad.

In the men's meet, the Generals were paced by sophomore Ken Jackman (Wyckoff, N.J./Ramapo) in first place overall with a time of 27:46. Sophomore Rob Naftel (Birmingham, Ala./Mountain Brook) finished in second place, only one second behind Jackman. Naftel was followed by senior Frank Stearns (Purcellville, Va./Loudoun Valley) in sixth place overall with a time of 28:17. Finishing fourth for W&L was freshman David Hicks (Alexandria, Va./West Potomac), crossing the line in 28:53, a time good enough for ninth place. The team scores for the men's race were as follows, W&L 35, Bridgewater 40, Roanoke 77, Southern Virginia 96, and Eastern Mennonite 96.

The Generals will be in action again on October 30. Both squads will be competing in the ODAC Championships.

W&L HARRIERS COMPETE AT STATE DIV. III MEET

BRIDGEWATER, Va. -- The Washington and Lee cross country squads competed in the Virginia State Division III Meet on Saturday afternoon in Bridgewater, Va. The women's squad finished in third place out of nine teams, while the men placed fifth out of 11 squads.

For the women's team, freshman Burke Duncan (Okla. City, Okla./Casady School) led the way with a sixth place finish in a time of 20:26. Senior Ashley Davis (Houston, Texas/Mirabeau B. Lamar) was second for the Generals in 11th place with a time of 20:52. The Generals were able to place their first five runners within the top 25 finishers in the race. There were 82 competitors in the women's meet.

On the men's side, the Generals were paced by sophomore Rob Naftel (Birmingham, Ala./Mountain Brook) in sixth place with a personal record time of 27:07 and sophomore Ken Jackman (Wyckoff, N.J./Ramapo) in 13th place with a time of 27:42. Rounding out the top five were senior Frank Stearns (Purcellville, Va./Loudoun Valley) at 28:16, and freshmen David Hicks (Alexandria, Va./West Potomac) and Will Teichman (High Point, N.C./T. Wingate Andrews), finishing in 28:24 and 28:47, respectively. There were 97 runners in the men's race.

Both squads will run again next Saturday when they host the Generals' Invitational in Lexington, Va. The races are scheduled to begin at 10:00 am.

W&L HARRIERS FINISH 13th AT FROSTBURG ST. INVITATIONAL

FROSTBURG, Md. -- The Washington and Lee cross country squads competed in the Frostburg State Invitational on Saturday afternoon. Both the men's and women's teams finished in 13th place out of 23 teams.

For the women's squad, freshman Brooke Duncan (Okla. City, Okla./Casady School) led the way with a 28th place finish in a time of 20:12. Junior Kathleen Moroney (Hampton Bays, N.Y./Hampton Bays) was second for the Generals in 74th place with a time of 21:14. The Generals were able to place their first six runners within the top 100 runners in the race. There were 201 competitors in the women's competition.

On the men's side, the Generals were paced by sophomore Ken Jackman (Wyckoff, N.J./Ramapo) in 34th place with a time of 27:31 and sophomore Rob Naftel (Birmingham, Ala./Mountain Brook) in 35th place just one second later. There were 217 runners in the men's race.

Both squads will run again next Saturday at the Virginia Division III Meet in Bridgewater, Va.

W&L HARRIERS SWEEP GREENSBORO INVITATIONAL

GREENSBORO, N.C. -- The Washington and Lee cross country teams traveled to Greensboro, N.C. on Saturday, bringing home meet championships in both men's and women's action. The W&L men compiled a team total of 20 points while the women swept their meet with a perfect score of 15.

For the women's squad, freshman Brooke Duncan (Oklahoma City, Okla./Casady School) took home the individual championship, crossing the finish line in a time of 20:32. Junior Kathleen Moroney (Hampton Bays, N.Y./Hampton Bays) finished second with a time of 20:58. Moroney was followed by senior Ashley Davis (Houston, Texas/Mirabeau B. Lamar) in third at 21:38. The Generals also took spots 4-6 and 13 of the top 18.

In the men's meet, the Generals were paced by sophomore Ken Jackman (Wyckoff, N.J./Ramapo) in second place overall with a time of 28:29. Sophomore Rob Naftel (Birmingham, Ala./Mountain Brook) finished third overall and second for W&L in 28:41. Naftel was followed by senior Frank Stearns (Purcellville, Va./Loudoun Valley) in fourth overall with a time of 30:03.

The Generals will be in action again on October 2. They will be competing in the Frostburg St. Invitaional.

W&L HARRIERS OPEN SEASON AT LEBANON VALLEY

LEBANON VALLEY, Pa. -- Washington and Lee opened its 1999 Cross Country season Saturday at the Lebanon Valley Invite. Both men and women competed in the meet. In the women's competition, the Generals ran their way to a ninth place finish out of 24 teams. The men placed 14th out of 25 in their team competition.

For the women's squad, freshman Katherine Hill (Richmond Hill, Ga./Richmond Hill) and junior Kathleen Moroney (Hampton Bays, N.Y./Hampton Bays) were among the frontrunners for W&L. Hill finished 23rd overall with a time of 21:01 and Moroney was 52nd overall with a time of 21:59. Senior Ashley Davis (Houston, Texas/Mirabeau B. Lamar) placed 59th place with a time of 22:16. The Generals strong showing was a direct result of their five runners all placing in the top 100.

On the men's side, the Generals were paced by sophomore Rob Naftel (Birmingham, Ala./Mountain Brook) who finished in 37th place with a time of 28:25. Running a strong second for W&L was sophomore Ken Jackman (Wyckoff, N.J./Ramapo) in 44th place at 28:33. Both squads will run again next weekend at the Christopher Newport Invitational in Newport News, Va.
