NEWPORT NEWS, Va. — Finishing neck-and-neck with Division I William and Mary, the Washington and Lee women's cross country team took second out of four schools at the Christopher Newport Cross Country Invitational on Saturday.
The Tribe totaled 22 points to claim the top spot, while the Generals had 35 points. Hampton finished third with 91 points.
Senior Samantha Yates (Birmingham, Ala./St. Paul's School) paced the Blue and White with a second-place finish out of 45 runners on the 6k course. She crossed the finish line in 22:27.00. The next four W&L competitors finished between fifth and 11th, and were only separated by 35 seconds, while also using this race as a tempo run for a few of those Blue and White runners.
Senior Maggie Seybold (Cockeysville, Md./McDonogh School) took fifth in 23:36.00, and junior Julia Moody (Houston, Texas/St. John's School) claimed seventh in 23:49.00. Junior Katie Bearup (Arvada, Colo./Ralston Valley) finished 10th (24:02.00), and senior Kirsten McMichael (Eighty Four, Pa./Ringgold) was 11th with a time of 24:02.
Junior Charlotte Kowalk of William & Mary took first in 22:18, as W&M grabbed six of the Top 10 spots. W&L claimed the other four positions in the Top 10.
The Generals return to action on October 13, when they split the team between the Connecticut College Invitational and the Gettysburg Invitational.
