LEXINGTON, Va. — For the first time since 2008, Washington and Lee will have two competitors at the NCAA Division III Women's Cross Country Championship. Seniors Molly Ortiz (Ketchikan, Alaska/Ketchikan) and Lauren Schultz (Hopkinton, Mass./Hopkinton) will make the trek to Terre Haute, Ind., on Saturday, November 17 to represent the Generals.
The race begins at 12:00 pm at the LaVern Gibson Course, and the event can be watched live at this link.
The W&L duo qualified for the Championship with their finishes at the NCAA South/Southeast Regional on November 10 hosted by Emory. Ortiz crossed the finish line in eighth (23:07), and Schultz was right on her heels in ninth with a time of 23:08. Ortiz and Schultz advanced as individuals because they finished as one of the Top 7 individuals not on one of the two automatic qualifying teams. W&L as a team placed fourth at the regional.
This will be the first trip to the national meet for Ortiz, but Schultz ran in the event last season. Schultz finished with a time of 23:32 to take 239th-place.
In 2008, the last time W&L had multiple runners at the event, Elizabeth Webb '09 and Jessica Shaw '09 competed for the Generals.
