W&L Women’s XC Tabbed Second in ODAC Preseason Poll

FOREST, Va. — The Old Dominion Athletic Conference released its 2012 women's cross country preseason coaches' poll on Monday, and Washington and Lee was picked second out of 10 schools. The Generals received one first-place vote and 72 total points.

Defending league champion Bridgewater collected nine first-place votes and 81 total points to garner the top spot in the voting. Virginia Wesleyan was picked third (55), Lynchburg fourth (53) and Shenandoah (50) rounds out the top five. Roanoke is sixth with 45 points, followed by Eastern Mennonite (41), Randolph (23), Guilford (17) and Emory & Henry (13).

The Generals took second at the 2011 ODAC Championship with four runners finishing in the Top 15. All four of the athletes return to the team for the 2012 season. Senior Lauren Schultz (Hopkinton, Mass./Hopkinton) placed second with a time of 23:06 to earn First Team All-ODAC honors for the third time in her career. She also was the ODAC/Farm Bureau Insurance Scholar-Athlete of the Year.

Junior Annelise Madison (Roca, Neb./Norris) finished fifth at 23:40, and also made First Team All-ODAC. Classmate Brandie Huffman (Warrenton, Va./Fauquier) garnered Second Team All-ODAC honors after crossing the line 11th. Senior Molly Ortiz (Ketchikan, Alaska/Ketchikan) placed 15th and narrowly missed an All-ODAC citation.    

W&L has eight letterwinners returning in 2012 and brings in eight first-year runners. Besides Schultz's strong finish at the ODAC meet, she also qualified for the NCAA Championship with a 12th-place finish at the NCAA South/Southeast Regional. She was the first women's cross country runner to qualify for nationals since 2009.

The team opens the season on Friday, August 31, at the ODAC Preview Meet at Peakview Farms in Harrisonburg, Va.
