W&L VOLLEYBALL FALLS TO SOUTHWESTERN, 3-0, IN NCAA TOURNAMENT

ATLANTA, Ga. -- The Washington and Lee volleyball team saw its season come to an end with a 30-24, 30-24, 30-24 loss to Southwestern in the opening round of the NCAA Tournament on Thursday evening at Emory University.

W&L was led by senior setter Christine Gladysz (Palm Harbor, Fla./Berkeley Prep), who totaled 32 assists, 14 digs and eight kills. Senior right side Laura Byrne (Springfield, Pa./Merion Mercy Academy) registered eight kills, 14 digs and four blocks, while senior middle blocker Susan Gaillard (Charleston, S.C./Porter Gaud) posted 13 kills and four blocks. Freshman outside hitter Laura Maurer (Sparta, N.J./Pope John XXIII) notched nine kills and junior libero Lauren Edmonson (Crystal Lake, Ill./Prairie Ridge) added 19 digs.

W&L finished the 2005 campaign with a 32-5 overall record. Southwestern improved to 35-4 overall and will take on top-ranked Emory University on Friday evening.

Washington and Lee’s six seniors conclude their four-year careers with a 127-25 (.836) overall record, a perfect 42-0 record in the ODAC, and four ODAC Championships.

W&L VOLLEYBALL WINS ODAC CHAMPIONSHIP

EMORY, Va. -- The top-seeded Washington and Lee volleyball team won its fifth-straight ODAC Championship after defeating Virginia Wesleyan (30-16, 30-19, 30-17) in the tournament semifinals and then topping Randolph-Macon (30-25, 30-21, 26-30, 30-16) in the championship match.

Senior setter Christine Gladysz (Palm Harbor, Fla./Berkeley Prep) was named the tournament MVP and was joined on the all-tournament team by junior libero Lauren Edmonson (Crystal Lake, Ill./Prairie Ridge) and senior middle blocker Susan Gaillard (Charleston, S.C./Porter-Gaud).

In the win over the Marlins, W&L was paced by Gaillard’s 13 kills and six blocks. Senior right side Laura Byrne (Springfield, Pa./Merion Mercy Academy) notched nine kills, nine digs and four blocks, while Edmonson posted 17 digs. Gladysz amassed 40 assists and 16 digs.

In the championship victory over Randolph-Macon, the Generals (32-4) were again led by Gaillard’s 16 kills and nine blocks. Sophomore outside hitter Jessica Hudock (Tampa, Fla./Holy Names) registered 14 kills and four aces, while Byrne recorded 11 kills, 24 digs, six blocks and three aces. Edmonson notched 18 digs and Gladysz racked up 48 assists and 20 digs.

W&L will now await word on who it will face in the NCAA Tournament to be played on Thursday and Friday.

W&L VOLLEYBALL ADVANCES TO ODAC SEMIFINALS

EMORY, Va. -- The top-seeded Washington and Lee volleyball team advanced to the ODAC Tournament semifinals with a 30-9, 30-11, 30-14 win over eighth-seeded Guilford on Friday morning at Emory & Henry College.

W&L (30-4) was paced by freshman outside hitter Laura Maurer’s (Sparta, N.J./Pope John XXIII) seven kills. Freshman outside hitter Alex Scaggs (West Chester, Pa./Unionville) notched six kills, while freshman outside hitter Jessica Ulrich (Gettysburg, Pa./Gettysburg Area) and sophomore outside hitter Jessica Hudock (Tampa, Fla./Holy Names) each recorded five kills. Senior setter Christine Gladysz (Palm Harbor, Fla./Berkeley Prep) amassed 19 assists and four blocks, and junior libero Lauren Edmonson (Crystal Lake, Ill./Prairie Ridge) added 12 digs.

Washington and Lee will now face fourth-seeded Virginia Wesleyan in a semifinal contest on Saturday at 10:00 am. The championship match is slated to being at 7:00 pm.

DANVILLE, Ky. -- The Washington and Lee volleyball team saw its school record winning streak end at 21 matches after splitting in the second day of the Centre College Halloween Bash on Sunday morning. The Generals were defeated by Capital, 30-24, 21-30, 30-23, 30-26, before ending the tournament with a 22-30, 30-21, 30-23, 30-20 win over Centre.

In the loss to Capital, the Generals were led by freshman outside hitter Laura Maurer (Sparta, N.J./Pope John XXIII), who posted 19 kills and seven digs. Senior middle blocker Susan Gaillard (Charleston, S.C./Porter-Gaud) totaled 15 kills and five blocks, and freshman middle blocker Laurel Stewart (Charlotte, N.C./Providence) notched 14 kills. Sophomore outside hitter Jessica Hudock (Tampa, Fla./Holy Names) amassed 12 kills and 15 digs, while senior right side Laura Byrne (Springfield, Pa./Merion Mercy Academy) registered six kills and a career-high 27 digs. Senior setter Christine Gladysz (Palm Harbor, Fla./Berkeley Prep) racked up 59 assists, 15 digs and six blocks.

In the victory over Centre, Gaillard totaled 20 kills, five blocks and five digs. Maurer tallied 15 kills, while Byrne posted 11 kills, 14 digs and five blocks. Junior libero Lauren Edmonson (Crystal Lake, Ill./Prairie Ridge) added a team-best 17 digs and Gladysz amassed 53 assists, nine digs, five blocks and four service aces.

Washington and Lee (29-4) will return to action on Friday in the opening round of the ODAC Tournament at Emory & Henry College. The Generals will be the tournament’s top seed and will face eighth-seeded Guilford in the opener.

W&L VOLLEYBALL BREEZES PAST SWEET BRIAR, 3-0

AMHERST, Va. -- The Washington and Lee volleyball team finished its ODAC regular season schedule undefeated for the fifth straight season as the Generals defeated Sweet Briar, 30-11, 30-6, 30-7, on Wednesday evening.

W&L (26-3, 10-0) compiled a .667 hitting percentage (46 kills, 2 errors, 66 attempts) in the contest, a statistic which ties for the second-highest team hitting percentage in a three-game match in Division III history. Additionally, the win was W&L’s 19th in a row, tying the school record set last season.

The Generals were paced by freshman outside hitter Alex Scaggs (West Chester, Pa./Unionville), who notched 13 kills in 17 attempts. Freshman outside hitter Jessica Ulrich (Gettysburg, Pa./Gettysburg Area) posted 10 kills and five service aces, while freshman middle blocker Abbey Wilson (Midlothian, Va./Midlothian) registered eight kills in 11 attempts. Senior defensive specialist Virginia Baird (Houston, Texas/Lamar) added 14 digs, while sophomore setter Lauren Rudolph (Ft. Wayne, Ind./Concordia Lutheran) amassed 37 assists and eight service aces.

The loss dropped Sweet Briar to 1-19 overall and 0-9 in the Old Dominion Athletic Conference.

The Generals will return to action on Saturday as they compete in the Centre College Halloween Bash. W&L will play Oglethorpe at 10:00 am and Piedmont at 2:00 pm.

LEXINGTON, Va. -- The Washington and Lee volleyball team claimed the championship of the Generals Classic with a pair of victories on Saturday afternoon. The Generals defeated Elizabethtown, 30-19, 30-26, 30-25, then defeated Roanoke, 30-15, 30-21, 30-22 to finish the tournament 4-0 overall and up their win streak to 18 straight.

W&L (25-3) senior setter Christine Gladysz (Palm Harbor, Fla./Berkeley Prep) was named the tournament MVP, while junior libero Lauren Edmonson (Crystal Lake, Ill./Prairie Ridge) and senior middle blocker Susan Gaillard (Charleston, S.C./Porter-Gaud) were also named to the all-tournament team.

In the win over Elizabethtown (17-10), W&L was paced by Gaillard’s 13-kill, eight-block, seven-dig performance. Freshman outside hitter Laura Maurer (Sparta, N.J./Pope John XXIII) notched 10 kills and 13 digs, while senior right side Laura Byrne (Springfield, Pa./Merion Mercy Academy) posted nine kills and 12 digs. Edmonson added a team-best 19 digs, while Gladysz registered 39 assists, 11 digs and five blocks.

In the victory over Roanoke (13-13), sophomore outside hitter Jessica Hudock (Tampa, Fla./Holy Names) recorded a team-high 12 kills and seven digs. Maurer again notched 10 kills and eight digs, while Edmonson posted 13 digs. Gladysz added 49 assists and three service aces to set a new W&L career aces record (236), breaking the record of 235 formerly held by Stacey Kimmel ‘03.

The Generals return to action on Wednesday as they travel to Sweet Briar for a 6:30 pm contest.

In the win over St. Mary’s (16-14), the Generals (23-3) were paced by freshman outside hitter Laura Maurer’s (Sparta, N.J./Pope John XXIII) 10 kills and five digs. EMORY, Va. -- Washington and Lee amassed 56 assists in defeating Emory & Henry, 30-11, 30-20, 30-25, in ODAC volleyball action on Tuesday evening.

The assist total is tied for eighth all-time in Division III for a three-game match. Senior setter Christine Gladysz (Palm Harbor, Fla./Berkeley Prep) did her part by tallying 39 assists and a pair of aces in just two games. Sophomore setter Lauren Rudolph (Ft. Wayne, Ind./Concordia Lutheran) added 14 assists and 12 digs.

Freshman outside hitter Laura Maurer (Sparta, N.J./Pope John Paul XXIII) was the recipient of most of the assists, totaling 14 kills and a pair of aces in just two games. Freshman outside hitter Alex Scaggs (West Chester, Pa./Unionville) notched 10 kills and four blocks in two games, while senior right side Laura Byrne (Springfield, Pa./Merion Mercy Academy) posted seven kills and 11 digs in two games. The Generals defeated VWC, 24-30, 30-20, 30-17, 30-18 before downing SVU, 30-18, 30-15, 30-17.

In the win over the Marlins (15-9, 6-2), the Generals were led by senior middle blocker Susan Gaillard (Charleston, S.C./Porter-Gaud) and freshman outside hitter Laura Maurer (Sparta, N.J./Pope John Paul XXIII), who notched 15 and 14 kills, respectively. Senior middle blocker Susan Gaillard (Charleston, S.C./Porter-Gaud) posted 15 kills, while sophomore outside hitter Jessica Hudock (Tampa, Fla./Holy Names) and freshman outside hitter Laura Maurer (Sparta, N.J./Pope John Paul XXIII) notched nine kills each. DANVILLE, Va. -- The Washington and Lee women’s volleyball team upped its record to 17-3 with a pair of wins on the final day of the Averett Invitational on Saturday afternoon in Danville, Va. The Generals defeated Greensboro, 30-26, 33-31, 23-30, 30-22 and Meredith, 30-11, 30-14, 30-21.

In the win over the Pride (15-4), the Generals were led by freshman outside hitter Laura Maurer (Sparta, N.J./Pope John Paul XXIII), who tallied 19 kills. Junior libero Lauren Edmonson (Crystal Lake, Ill./Prairie Ridge) notched 26 digs and senior right side Laura Byrne (Springfield, Pa./Merion Mercy Academy) totaled six blocks. Senior setter Christine Gladysz (Palm Harbor, Fla./Berkeley Prep) notched 50 assists and two aces.

Against Meredith (6-8), freshman outside hitter Alex Scaggs (West Chester, Pa./Unionville) had 14 kills and Edmonson tallied 12 digs. Gladysz totaled 26 assists in just two games.

Gladsyz is now the Old Dominon Athletic Conference (ODAC) all-time leader in assists. She has 4,558 career assists, which broke the old record of 4,475 assists held by Roanoke’s Holly Holland.

In the win over the Royals (0-18), the Generals were led by freshman outside hitter Laura Maurer (Sparta, N.J./Pope John Paul XXIII), who tallied 13 kills. Freshman middle blocker Laurel Stewart (Charlotte, N.C./Providence) notched six kills, four aces and three blocks in only two games. Senior setter Christine Gladysz (Palm Harbor, Fla./Berkeley Prep) added 35 assists and six digs. With the win, Head Coach Bryan Snyder picked up his 200th career victory.

The Generals dropped the first game, 30-24, but came back to win the final three games by scores of 30-27, 30-15 and 30-13.

The Generals (10-3, 4-0) were led by freshman middle blocker Laurel Stewart (Charlotte, N.C./Providence), who tallied 12 kills and three blocks. W&L VOLLEYBALL PLACES SECOND AT EMORY CLASSIC

ATLANTA, Ga. -- The Washington and Lee volleyball team won both its matches on Saturday to place second at the Emory University Classic. The Generals defeated Regis, 30-12, 30-21, 30-20, then downed LeTourneau, 30-24, 30-26, 30-12.

In the win over Regis, the Generals were paced by freshman outside hitter Alex Scaggs (West Chester, Pa./Unionville), who totaled 11 kills and seven service aces. Freshman middle blocker Abbey Wilson (Midlothian, Va./Midlothian) notched nine kills and four blocks, while sophomore setter Lauren Rudolph (Ft. Wayne, Ind./Concordia Lutheran) tallied 30 assists, nine digs and six service aces.

In the victory over LeTourneau, freshman middle blocker Laurel Stewart (Charlotte, N.C./Providence) led the way with 12 kills and three blocks, while senior middle blocker Susan Gaillard (Charleston, S.C./Porter-Gaud) and freshman outside hitter Laura Maurer (Sparta, N.J./Pope John Paul XXIII) each registered 10 kills. Junior libero Lauren Edmonson (Crystal Lake, Ill./Prairie Ridge) added 12 digs and senior setter Christine Gladysz (Palm Harbor, Fla./Berkeley Prep) amassed 42 assists and 11 digs.

Washington and Lee (9-3) returns to action on Wednesday as it travels to Eastern Mennonite for a 6:30 pm contest.

W&L VOLLEYBALL SPLITS IN DAY ONE OF EMORY CLASSIC

ATLANTA, Ga. -- The Washington and Lee volleyball team split a pair of matches in the opening day of the Emory University Classic on Friday evening. The Generals defeated Spring Hill College, 30-21, 30-27, 30-23, before falling to fourth-ranked Emory, 30-26, 30-28, 30-20.

In the win over Spring Hill, freshman middle blocker Laurel Stewart (Charlotte, N.C./Providence) tallied 11 kills in two games, while freshman outside hitter Laura Maurer (Sparta, N.J./Pope John Paul XXIII) and senior middle blocker Susan Gaillard (Charleston, S.C./Porter-Gaud) notched 11 and nine kills, respectively. Junior libero Lauren Edmonson (Crystal Lake, Ill./Prairie Ridge) totaled 14 digs and senior setter Christine Gladysz (Palm Harbor, Fla./Berkeley Prep) amassed 33 assists, 12 digs and seven service aces.

In the loss to Emory, Maurer registered 11 kills, Edmonson totaled 11 digs and Gladysz notched 32 assists.

W&L (7-3) returns to action on Saturday for the final day of the tournament. The Generals play Regis at 11:30 am and LeTourneau at 2:00 pm.

W&L VOLLEYBALL DEFEATS ROANOKE, 3-0

LEXINGTON, Va. -- The Washington and Lee volleyball team improved its winning streak against ODAC opponents to 57 straight with a 30-14, 30-13, 30-16 win over Roanoke on Tuesday evening at the Warner Center.

The Generals (6-2, 3-0) were led by freshman outside hitter Laura Maurer (Sparta, N.J./Pope John Paul XXIII), who tallied 14 kills, five digs and three blocks. Freshman middle blockers Kassie Bagley (Midlothian, Va./James River) and Abbey Wilson (Midlothian, Va./Midlothian) each totaled seven kills and three blocks, while senior right side Laura Byrne (Springfield, Pa./Merion Mercy Academy) added six kills, eight digs and two service aces. Senior setter Christine Gladysz (Palm Harbor, Fla./Berkeley Prep) registered 38 assists, six digs and three aces, and junior libero Lauren Edmonson (Crystal Lake, Ill./Prairie Ridge) amassed a team-high 10 digs.

With the loss, Roanoke fell to 8-4 overall, 2-1 in the ODAC.

Washington and Lee returns to action on Friday as it competes in the Emory University Classic. The Generals begin the tournament at 2:00 pm against Spring Hill College.

LYNCHBURG, Va. -- The Washington and Lee women’s volleyball team improved its record to 5-2 overall, 2-0 ODAC with a pair of 3-0 victories over Randolph-Macon Woman’s College and Southern Virginia on Saturday afternoon in Lynchburg, Va. The Generals defeated R-MWC, 30-16, 30-21, 30-22, before downing SVU, 30-21, 30-26, 30-13.

In the win over the WildCats (2-9, 0-2), the Generals were led by freshman outside hitter Laura Maurer (Sparta, N.J./Pope John Paul XXIII) who notched 14 kills. Junior libero Lauren Edmonson (Crystal Lake, Ill./Prairie Ridge) tallied nine digs, while senior setter Christine Gladysz (Palm Harbor, Fla./Berkeley Prep) dished out 24 assists.

Against the Knights (8-2), Maurer tallied 11 kills, while senior middle blocker Susan Gaillard (Charleston, S.C./Porter-Gaud) added seven kills and six blocks. Gladysz finished with 39 assists and seven digs.

Washington and Lee returns to action on Tuesday when it hosts Roanoke at 6:30 pm.

The Generals (3-2, 1-0) were paced by freshman outside hitter Laura Maurer (Sparta, N.J./Pope John Paul XXIII), who tallied 11 kills and four digs. Senior middle blocker Susan Gaillard (Charleston, S.C./Porter-Gaud) notched seven kills, four blocks and two service aces in just one game of action, while sophomore setter Lauren Rudolph (Ft. Wayne, Ind./Concordia Lutheran) amassed 28 assists and five digs.

With the loss, Guilford fell to 2-5 overall, 0-1 in the ODAC.

Washington and Lee returns to action on Saturday as it travels to Randolph-Macon Woman’s College for a tri-match with the host WildCats and Southern Virginia. W&L plays RMWC at 11:00 am, then plays SVU at 1:30 pm.

The Generals fell to fifth-ranked Emory, 30-27, 30-23, 30-23, then defeated Centre College, 30-23, 28-30, 30-20, 30-23. Emory defeated Christopher Newport, 30-26, 31-29, 30-26 to claim the tournament title.

In the loss to Emory (4-1), the Generals were paced by junior outside hitter Ashley Hurt (Altamonte Springs, Fla./Trinity Prep), who tallied 12 kills. Freshman middle blocker Laurel Stewart (Charlotte, N.C./Providence) notched eight kills and six digs, while senior setter Christine Gladysz (Palm Harbor, Fla./Berkeley Prep) totaled 36 assists and 12 digs.

In the win over Centre, senior middle blocker Susan Gaillard (Charleston, S.C./Porter-Gaud) led the way with 14 kills and six blocks. Senior right side Laura Byrne (Springfield, Pa./Merion Mercy Academy) logged 11 kills, 12 digs and six blocks, while junior libero Lauren Edmonson (Crystal Lake, Ill./Prairie Ridge) added 21 digs. Gladysz also totaled 54 assists and 15 digs.

Washington and Lee returns to action on Thursday as it hosts Guilford for a 7:00 pm match.

W&L VOLLEYBALL GOES 1-1 IN DAY ONE OF THE W&L INVITATIONAL

LEXINGTON, Va. -- The 25th-ranked Washington and Lee volleyball team began its 2005 season by hosting the 15th annual W&L Invitational on Friday at the Warner Center. The Generals opened with a 27-30, 30-21, 24-30, 17-30 loss to Christopher Newport, then defeated Catholic, 30-25, 30-21, 30-20.

In the loss to CNU (5-1), W&L was led by senior middle blocker Susan Gaillard (Charleston, S.C./Porter-Gaud), who totaled 13 kills. Freshman middle blocker Laurel Stewart (Charlotte, N.C./Providence) tallied eight kills and eight blocks, while sophomore outside hitter Jessica Hudock (Tampa, Fla./Holy Names) posted seven kills, five service aces and four blocks. Junior libero Lauren Edmonson (Crystal Lake, Ill./Prairie Ridge) added 21 digs, while senior setter Christine Gladysz (Palm Harbor, Fla./Berkeley Prep) notched 33 assists and 12 digs.

In the win over Catholic (1-5), the Generals were paced by Stewart, who registered 10 kills and five blocks. Gaillard posted eight kills and seven blocks, while Edmonson tallied 10 digs. Gladysz added 35 assists and seven digs.

Washington and Lee returns to the court on Saturday at 1:00 pm in the second day of the W&L Invitational. The Generals will face fifth-ranked Emory University in their first match of the day.
