W&L VOLLEYBALL FALLS TO EMORY IN NCAA TOURNAMENT, 3-1

ATLANTA, Ga. -- The Washington and Lee volleyball team saw its season end with a 23-30, 24-30, 30-23, 27-30 loss to host Emory University in the second round of the NCAA Tournament.

The Generals were led by senior outside hitter Emily Wolfing (Mt. Airy, Md./South Carroll), who had 18 kills and 14 digs. Sophomore outside hitter Ashley Hurt (Altamonte Springs, Fla./Trinity Prep) had 12 kills, while junior middle blocker Susan Gaillard (Charleston, S.C./Porter-Gaud) posted 11 kills. Junior middle blocker Taylor Gibson (San Diego, Calif./Point Loma) added nine kills and five blocks, and junior setter Christine Gladysz (Palm Harbor, Fla./Berkeley Prep) amassed 44 assists and 12 digs.

The loss ended W&L’s season at 28-8 overall. Emory improved to 30-6 overall and will face Texas Lutheran in the regional championship match on Saturday at 7:00 pm.

W&L VOLLEYBALL DEFEATS MARYVILLE IN NCAA TOURNAMENT, 3-0

ATLANTA, Ga. -- The Washington and Lee volleyball team advanced to the second round of the NCAA Division III Tournament with a 30-28, 30-25, 30-23 win over Maryville on Thursday evening at Emory University.

The Generals (28-7) were paced by senior outside hitter Emily Wolfing (Mt. Airy, Md./South Carroll), who had nine kills and 25 digs. Junior middle blocker Susan Gaillard (Charleston, S.C./Porter-Gaud) had 11 kills and four blocks, while sophomore outside hitter Ashley Hurt (Altamonte Springs, Fla./Trinity Prep) had 12 kills. Junior right side Laura Byrne (Springfield, Pa./Merion Mercy Academy) added seven kills, 12 digs and four blocks, and junior setter Christine Gladysz (Palm Harbor, Fla./Berkeley Prep) amassed 40 assists and nine digs.

With the loss, Maryville fell to 29-8 overall for the season.

Washington and Lee will face host Emory (29-9) in a second round match on Friday at 7:00 pm. In the other regional semifinal, top-seeded Trinity (Texas) squares off against Texas Lutheran, a 3-0 winner over Christopher Newport. The regional final will be played on Saturday at 7:00 pm.

W&L VOLLEYBALL WINS FOURTH STRAIGHT ODAC CHAMPIONSHIP

GREENSBORO, N.C. -- The Washington and Lee volleyball team claimed its fourth straight ODAC Championship with 3-0 wins over Virginia Wesleyan and Randolph-Macon on Saturday afternoon at Guilford College. The Generals defeated VWC in the semifinals, 30-23, 30-23, 30-13, before downing Randolph-Macon in the championship match, 30-28, 30-13, 30-25.

With the wins, W&L has now claimed seven of the last eight ODAC Championships and is riding a 54-match winning streak against ODAC opponents.

In the win over the Marlins (19-8), W&L was led by senior outside hitter Emily Wolfing (Mt. Airy, Md./South Carroll), who had 15 kills, 13 digs and six aces. Junior right side Laura Byrne (Springfield, Pa./Merion Mercy Academy) posted 10 kills and 13 digs, while senior libero Jennifer Lux (Virginia Beach, Va./Cox) had a season-high 27 digs. Junior setter Christine Gladysz (Palm Harbor, Fla./Berkeley Prep) added 47 assists, nine digs and four blocks.

In the victory over R-MC (21-15), the Generals were paced by Byrne’s 16 kills and 14 digs. Wolfing tallied 16 kills and eight digs, and junior middle blocker Susan Gaillard (Charleston, S.C./Porter-Gaud) had 14 kills. Lux added 19 digs, while Gladysz amassed 51 assists and 16 digs.

Byrne, Gaillard, Gladysz and Wolfing were all named to the all-tournament team, with Gladysz claiming tournament MVP honors.

W&L will now wait to find out who and where they will be playing in the NCAA Tournament.

W&L VOLLEYBALL DEFEATS RANDOLPH-MACON WOMAN'S COLLEGE, 3-0

GREENSBORO, N.C.. -- The top-seeded Washington and Lee volleyball team defeated eighth-seeded Randolph-Macon Woman’s College, 30-13, 30-14, 30-19, in an ODAC Tournament quarterfinal match on Friday evening at the Ragan-Brown Field House on the campus of Guilford College.

The Generals (25-7) were led by junior middle blocker Taylor Gibson (San Diego, Calif./Point Loma), who registered a team-high 12 kills and three blocks. Senior outside hitter Emily Wolfing (Mt. Airy, Md./South Carroll) added nine kills and six digs while senior defensive specialist Jennifer Lux (Virginia Beach, V a./Cox) chipped in with a team-best 15 digs and seven aces. Junior right side Laura Byrne (Springfield, Pa./Merion Mercy Academy) notched six kills, four aces, and two blocks and junior setter Christine Gladysz (Palm Harbor, Fla./Berkeley Prep) had six digs and 38 assists.

With the loss, the WildCats finished their season with a record of 11-19.

Washington and Lee returns to the court on Saturday to play the winner of the match between fourth-seeded Virginia Wesleyan and fifth-seeded Emory & Henry in the ODAC Tournament semifinals. The match begins at 10:30 am.

In the loss to Mt. St. Joseph, W&L was led by senior outside hitter Emily Wolfing (Mt. Airy, Md./South Carroll), who totaled 12 kills and nine digs. Junior right side Laura Byrne (Springfield, Pa./Merion Mercy Academy) and sophomore outside hitter Ashley Hurt (Altamonte Springs, Fla./Trinity Prep) both tallied nine kills, while junior setter Christine Gladysz (Palm Harbor, Fla./Berkeley Prep) amassed 37 assists and five digs.

In the loss to Thomas More, the Generals were again paced by Wolfing, who totaled 16 kills and 17 digs. Junior middle blocker Susan Gaillard (Charleston, S.C./Porter-Gaud) totaled 10 kills, while Gladysz notched 43 assists, five blocks and three aces.

The Generals (24-7) return to action on Friday as they compete in the ODAC Volleyball Tournament hosted by Guilford College. W&L will be the top seed and will face eighth-seeded Randolph-Macon Woman’s College at a time to be determined.

In the win over Southwestern (20-8), the Generals were paced by sophomore outside hitter Ashley Hurt (Altamonte Springs, Fla./Trinity Prep), who totaled 13 kills. Senior outside hitter Emily Wolfing (Mt. Airy, Md./South Carroll) posted 12 kills, 11 digs and three aces, while junior middle blocker Susan Gaillard (Charleston, S.C./Porter-Gaud) registered 10 kills. LEXINGTON, Va. -- Washington and Lee seniors Emily Wolfing (Mt. Airy, Md./South Carroll) and Jennifer Lux (Virginia Beach, Va./Cox) completed a straight sweep (42-0) against ODAC regular season competition for their careers by defeating Roanoke, 30-16, 30-16, 30-21, in volleyball action on Tuesday evening at the Warner Center.

The Generals (23-4, 11-0) also stretched their school-record winning streak to 18 straight matches with the win over the Maroons (18-11, 8-3).

Wolfing led the way with 15 kills and 11 digs, while Lux registered 10 digs. In the victory over Messiah (7-15), the Generals were led by senior outside hitter Emily Wolfing (Mt. Airy, Md./South Carroll), who totaled 15 kills and 10 digs. LEXINGTON, Va. -- The Washington and Lee volleyball team claimed its seventh-straight 20-win season with a 30-6, 30-3, 30-10 win over Sweet Briar on Wednesday evening at the Warner Center.

The win was also W&L’s (20-4, 10-0) 15th-straight this season and 41st consecutive ODAC victory.

The Generals were led by freshman outside hitter Shaun Edwards (Roanoke, Va./North Cross), who tallied nine kills and six digs. Freshman outside hitter Jessica Hudock (Tampa, Fla./Academy of the Holy Names) totaled seven kills, while sophomore outside hitter Virginia Baird (Houston, Texas/Lamar) notched six kills, four digs and five service aces. Freshman setter Lauren Rudolph (Ft. Wayne, Ind./Concordia Lutheran) added 19 assists, nine digs and eight service aces.

With the loss, Sweet Briar fell to 0-13 overall, 0-10 in the ODAC.

In the win over RMWC (7-15, 2-6), the Generals were led by senior outside hitter Emily Wolfing (Mt. Airy, Md./South Carroll), who posted 11 kills, six digs and two aces. Junior middle blocker Ashley Overly (Lancaster, Pa./Conestoga Valley) notched six kills and five blocks, while sophomore defensive specialist Lauren Edmonson (Crystal Lake, Ill./Prairie Ridge) tallied 10 digs. Freshman setter Lauren Rudolph (Ft. Wayne, Ind./Concordia Lutheran) added 26 assists.

In the victory over Hollins (3-13, 1-7), W&L (19-4, 9-0) was led by Wolfing’s eight kills. Overly totaled six kills and three blocks, while sophomore defensive specialist Allison Stokan (Houston, Texas/Jersey Village) notched 10 digs. Rudolph posted 43 assists and three aces.

With the two ODAC wins, W&L improved its ODAC winning streak to 40 straight matches over the past four seasons. The Generals are in action again on Wednesday as they host Sweet Briar for a 6:30 pm contest.

Junior right side Laura Byrne (Springfield, Pa./Merion Mercy Academy) tallied 11 kills, 10 digs and four blocks, while junior middle blocker Taylor Gibson (San Diego, Calif./Point Loma) registered 11 kills. In the win over Queens (9-11), the Generals were led by senior outside hitter Emily Wolfing (Mt. Airy, Md./South Carroll), who tallied 15 kills, six digs and four blocks. Junior right side Laura Byrne (Springfield, Pa./Merion Mercy Academy) notched 11 digs and four kills, while junior middle blocker Susan Gaillard (Charleston, S.C./Porter-Gaud) had 13 kills. In the win over Meredith (4-9), the Generals were led by senior outside hitter Emily Wolfing (Mt. Airy, Md./South Carroll), who tallied 13 kills and four blocks. Sophomore outside hitter Ashley Hurt (Altamonte Springs, Fla./Trinity Prep) notched 11 kills and junior right side Laura Byrne (Springfield, Pa./Merion Mercy Academy) totaled six kills and seven digs. The Generals (12-4, 6-0) were led by senior outside hitter Emily Wolfing (Mt. Airy, Md./South Carroll), who tallied 14 kills and 23 digs. Junior middle blocker Susan Gaillard (Charleston, S.C./Porter-Gaud) notched 14 kills and five blocks, and junior right side Laura Byrne (Springfield, Pa./Merion Mercy Academy) amassed 11 kills and 15 digs. Sophomore outside hitter Ashley Hurt (Altamonte Springs, Fla./Trinity Prep) added 13 kills, while junior setter Christine Gladysz (Palm Harbor, Fla./Berkeley Prep) recorded 57 assists and 20 digs.

LEXINGTON, Va. -- The Washington and Lee volleyball team extended its ODAC winning streak to 36 consecutive matches with a pair of wins on Saturday afternoon. The Generals downed Eastern Mennonite 30-14, 30-9, 30-22, before defeating Lynchburg, 30-20, 30-22, 30-18.

In the win over EMU (1-17, 1-4), W&L was led by senior outside hitter Emily Wolfing (Mt. Airy, Md./South Carroll), who tallied 10 kills, four digs and two blocks. Junior right side Laura Byrne (Springfield, Pa./Merion Mercy Academy) amassed eight kills and three digs, while junior setter Christine Gladysz (Palm Harbor, Fla./Berkeley Prep) added 27 assists and six digs.

In the victory against Lynchburg (9-5, 1-3), the Generals were again paced by Wolfing, who totaled 17 kills and eight digs. Byrne tallied eight kills and 14 digs, while senior libero Jennifer Lux (Virginia Beach, Va./Cox) added 16 digs. Gladysz amassed 50 assists and eight digs, and junior middle blocker Susan Gaillard (Charleston, S.C./Porter-Gaud) totaled 14 kills to move past the 1,000-career kill mark. She now claims 1,005 kills and ranks sixth all-time.

Washington and Lee (11-4, 5-0) will put its streak on the line again on Wednesday as it travels to Randolph-Macon for a 7:00 pm contest.

In their second match against King, W&L trailed two sets to none before coming back to win, 15-30, 29-31, 30-17, 30-28, 18-16.

Junior setter Christine Gladysz (Palm Harbor, Fla./Berkeley Prep), who was named to the all-tournament team, recorded a double-double with 41 assists and 23 digs in the victory over Eastern (11-5). Sophomore outside hitter Ashley Hurt (Altamonte Springs, Fla./Trinity Prep) notched 17 kills and junior middle blocker Susan Gaillard (Charleston, S.C./Porter-Gaud) tallied 11 kills and five total blocks. W&L VOLLEYBALL DEFEATS EMORY & HENRY AND VIRGINIA WESLEYAN, 3-0

NORFOLK, Va. -- The Washington and Lee volleyball team ran its regular-season winning streak against ODAC opponents to 33 matches over four seasons with wins over Emory & Henry and Virginia Wesleyan on Saturday in Norfolk, Va. The Generals defeated E&H, 30-27, 30-12, 30-23, then downed the host Marlins, 30-27, 30-25, 30-21.

In the win over Emory & Henry (4-5, 0-1), the Generals were led by sophomore outside hitter Ashley Hurt (Altamonte Springs, Fla./Trinity Prep), who totaled 15 kills. Senior outside hitter Emily Wolfing (Mt. Airy, Md./South Carroll) notched 10 kills, 11 digs and three blocks, while junior middle blocker Susan Gaillard (Charleston, S.C./Porter-Gaud) posted nine kills. Senior libero Jennifer Lux (Virginia Beach, Va./Cox) added 13 digs, and junior setter Christine Gladysz (Palm Harbor, Fla./Berkeley Prep) registered 33 assists.

Against Virginia Wesleyan (8-2, 1-1), W&L was paced by Gaillard’s 15 kills. Wolfing added nine kills, while Lux tallied 22 digs. Gladysz amassed 39 assists and 14 digs.

Washington and Lee (5-2, 2-0) returns to action on Friday as it participates in the Emory University Invitational. The Generals begin the tournament with a 4:30 pm match against Elmhurst.

W&L VOLLEYBALL DEFEATS MARY WASHINGTON, 3-0

FREDERICKSBURG, Va. -- The Washington and Lee volleyball team improved to 3-2 on the season with a 30-19, 30-20, 30-23 win at Mary Washington on Thursday evening.

The Generals were led by senior outside hitter Emily Wolfing (Mt. Airy, Md./South Carroll), who tallied 16 kills and 12 digs. Junior middle blocker Susan Gaillard (Charleston, S.C./Porter-Gaud) added seven kills and two blocks, while junior setter Christine Gladysz (Palm Harbor, Fla./Berkeley Prep) totaled 28 assists and 13 digs and three blocks. Senior libero Jennifer Lux (Virginia Beach, Va./Cox) added 13 digs.

With the loss, Mary Washington fell to 3-8 overall on the season.

Washington and Lee returns to action on Saturday as it travels to Norfolk, Va., to take on Virginia Wesleyan and Emory & Henry in the ODAC-openers for the Generals. W&L will play VWC at 11:00 am and E&H at 1:30 pm.

LEXINGTON, Va. -- The Washington and Lee volleyball team split its matches on Sunday in the second day of the W&L Volleyball Invitational. The Generals fell to Frostburg State (5-3), 27-30, 24-30, 30-25, 22-30, then defeated Catholic, 30-20, 30-12, 30-26, in the consolation game.

Frostburg State won the tournament championship, defeating Christopher Newport, 3-2.

In the loss to Frostburg, the Generals were paced by senior outside hitter Emily Wolfing (Mt. Airy, Md./South Carroll), who tallied 16 kills and 12 digs. Junior middle blocker Susan Gaillard (Charleston, S.C./Porter-Gaud) added 14 kills, while junior setter Christine Gladysz (Palm Harbor, Fla./Berkeley Prep) totaled 42 assists and 12 digs.

In the win over Catholic (3-5), the Generals were again led by Wolfing’s 13 kills and 16 digs. Gaillard totaled 13 kills and four blocks, while sophomore outside hitter Ashley Hurt (Altamonte Springs, Fla./Trinity Prep) notched 10 kills and seven digs. Gladysz amassed 40 assists and 12 digs. Gaillard and Gladysz were named to the all-tournament team.

Washington and Lee returns to action on Thursday as it travels to Mary Washington for a 7:00 pm contest.

In the win over Catholic (2-3), the Generals were paced by senior outside hitter Emily Wolfing (Mt. Airy, Md./South Carroll), who tallied 19 kills and 12 digs. Sophomore outside hitter Ashley Hurt (Altamonte Springs, Fla./Trinity Prep) notched 12 kills, while junior right side Laura Byrne (Springfield, Pa./Merion Mercy Academy) had 11 kills and eight digs. Junior setter Christine Gladysz (Palm Harbor, Fla./Berkeley Prep) amassed 50 assists and 15 digs.

In the loss to the Captains (5-2), the Generals were led by Hurt, who totaled 18 kills and 10 digs. Wolfing contributed 13 kills and 14 digs, while junior middle blocker Susan Gaillard (Charleston, S.C./Porter-Gaud) registered 13 kills and five blocks. Gladysz added 42 assists and 12 digs.

Washington and Lee (1-1) will return to action on Saturday as it takes on Frostburg State at 12:30 pm. CNU will take on Averett at 10:00 am, while Mary Washington faces Catholic at the same time. The championship and consolation matches will occur at 3:00 pm.
