LEXINGTON, Va. — The Washington and Lee volleyball team had three players with at least nine kills on its way to a 3-1 victory over Lynchburg on Saturday at the Duchossois Tennis Center.
The Generals (10-8, 7-1 ODAC) made quick work of the Hornets (7-9, 3-3 ODAC) in the opening two sets, 25-16 and 25-15. It appeared W&L was on its way to a sweep in the third, holding a 21-16 lead late in the stanza.
Lynchburg responded with a 4-2 run to pull within three (23-20). From there, the Hornets tallied five straight points, including three straight kills by junior outside hitter Sydney Frink, to take the set, 25-23.
The squads went back and forth in the fourth with the score tied, 18-18, toward the end of the set. Three consecutive points by the Generals, started by a kill from sophomore middle blocker Courtney Berry (Charlottesville, Va./Western Albemarle), pushed the advantage to 21-18.
W&L then extended the lead to 24-20, but Lynchburg scored three straight points to cut the margin to 24-23. Junior outside hitter Allison Webb (Thousand Oaks, Calif./Westlake) tallied a kill during the next rally to give the Blue and White the victory in the set (25-23) and the match.
Webb had nine kills on 23 total attempts with only two errors for a .304 hitting percentage. She also recorded five blocks and three digs. Senior outside hitter Meg Guignon (St. Louis, Mo./Visitation Academy) totaled a match-high 13 kills to go with 12 digs. Junior outside hitter Ashleigh Meade (Bristow, Va./Patriot) also had nine kills and 14 digs.
Senior outside hitter Elly Cosgrove (Wilmington, N.C./John T. Hoggard) paced the back row with 16 digs. Junior setter Anna Soroka (Mechanicsville, Va./Lee-Davis) notched 39 assists, two kills and two digs.
Frink led the Hornets with 10 kills and 10 digs. Junior defensive specialist Lauren Stanford recorded a match-high 19 digs.
The Generals played Stevenson later on Saturday at the Duchossois Tennis Center.
