W&L Volleyball Loses at Randolph-Macon, 3-1

ASHLAND, Va. — Randolph-Macon recorded a .287 hitting percentage, as it defeated the Washington and Lee volleyball team, 3-1, on Wednesday at Crenshaw Gym.

The Yellow Jackets (7-5, 3-0 ODAC) had a .593 hitting percentage (16 kills and 0 errors on 27 attempts) in the opening set en route to taking the first, 25-11. With the score tied, 9-9, in the second, the Generals (5-8, 2-1 ODAC) won six of the next eight points to grab a 15-11 advantage.

R-MC eventually knotted the score, 23-23, but back-to-back kills by sophomore outside hitter Brynne Gould (Boone, N.C./Watauga) and junior outside hitter Ashleigh Meade (Bristow, Va./Patriot) gave the Blue and White the second, 25-23.

The two squads were tied, 17-17, late in the third, but the Yellow Jackets scored seven straight points on their way to a 25-19 win in the set. R-MC carried the momentum over to the fourth, grabbing a 10-4 advantage to begin the stanza. W&L whittled the lead down to one (21-20), but the Yellow Jackets closed out the match by claiming four of the final five points to take the fourth, 25-21.

R-MC tallied 57 kills with 16 errors on 143 total attempts to register its .287 hitting percentage. The Blue and White hit .148 with 49 kills on 155 attempts with 26 errors.

Meade led the Generals with 13 kills and added six digs. Junior outside hitter Allison Webb (Thousand Oaks, Calif./Westlake) totaled 11 kills on a .375 hitting percentage with three blocks. Junior setter Anna Soroka (Mechanicsville, Va./Lee-Davis) notched 20 assists and nine digs, while senior outside hitter Elly Cosgrove (Wilmington, N.C./John T. Hoggard) had 21 digs.

Junior outside hitter Miranda Hall totaled 15 kills to pace R-MC, while senior middle hitter Emily Fitzwater recorded 12 kills on 18 attempts with one error (.611 hitting percentage). First-year defensive specialist Madison Warlick contributed a match-high 26 digs.

The Generals return to action on Saturday, when they play at Ferrum at 12 pm, and then have a neutral-site contest against Bridgewater at Ferrum at 2:00 pm.
