W&L Volleyball Upended by Otterbein, 3-1

COLUMBUS, Ohio — Junior outside hitter Ashleigh Meade (Bristow, Va./Patriot) totaled 11 kills on a .360 hitting percentage, and sophomore outside hitter Kiera Borthwick (Northville, Mich./Northville) notched a career-best seven blocks, but the Washington and Lee volleyball team lost to Otterbein, 3-1, on Saturday in its final match at the Otterbein/Capital Fall Classic.

The Cardinals (3-1) grabbed an early lead in the match by winning the first set, 25-16. With the score tied, 8-8, in the second, the Generals (0-4) tallied eight straight points, including two kills by Meade, to take a 16-8 advantage. From there, W&L claimed the set with ease, 25-18.

Otterbein answered by winning the first seven points of the third set, highlighted by two kills from senior outside hitter Haldey Sterett, to take command of the third. The Cardinals extended the lead to 11-1 before winning the set, 25-21.

The Blue and White scored the first three points of the fourth, but Otterbein responded with a 7-2 run take a 7-5 edge. Following a W&L point, the Cardinals won eight consecutive rallies to extend their advantage to 15-6. Otterbein then closed out the set and the match, 25-20.

Along with Meade's 11 kills, senior outside hitter Meg Guignon (St. Louis, Mo./Visitation Academy) recorded 10 kills and 13 digs. Guignon now has 990 career kills and with 10 more would become the 12th player in program history to reach 1,000 in her career. She was also named to the 10-member all-tournament team at the conclusion of the classic.

Senior outside hitter Elly Cosgrove (Wilmington, N.C./John T. Hoggard) led the back row with 20 digs, Borthwick added 11 digs and four kills to her blocks total.

Sterett notched 18 kills to pace the Cardinals to go with 12 digs. Junior defensive specialist Ashlyn Leon recorded a match-high 33 digs, and senior setter Andrea Miller registered 45 assists, six digs and three kills.   

The Generals return to action on Friday at the W&L Invitational. The Blue and White will host DeSales at 7:00 pm at the Duchossois Tennis Center.
