WESTERVILLE, Ohio — The Washington and Lee volleyball team dropped a five-set match to Ohio Wesleyan, 3-2, on Friday at the Otterbein/Capital Fall Classic.

The squads split the first two sets with the Battling Bishops (1-1) winning the first, 25-19, and the Generals (0-2) claiming the second, 25-15.

OWU held a 20-15 advantage late in the third, but three straight errors (one service and two attack) by the Battling Bishops and an ace by senior outside hitter Meg Guignon (St. Louis, Mo./Visitation Academy) pulled the Blue and White to within one (20-19). OWU answered with a 5-1 run, including three kills by first-year outside hitter Paige Hale, to win the stanza, 25-20.

The Battling Bishops looked to close out the match in the fourth, holding a 21-18 lead late in the set. Following a W&L timeout, the Generals won four straight points to take a one-point advantage (22-21). The squads exchanged points over the next few rallies, but then with the score tied, 24-24, a kill by Guignon and an attack error by OWU allowed the Blue and White to take the fourth set, 26-24.

In the fifth, the Battling Bishops quickly jumped out to a 7-3 lead, aided by four attack errors by the Generals. W&L then scored five of the next seven points to cut the deficit to one, 9-8, but OWU answered with three straight points to regain a four-point margin (12-8) en route to winning the set, 15-11.

The Generals hit just .066 as a team with 45 kills and 34 errors on 166 attempts. Sophomore outside hitter Brynne Gould (Boone, N.C./Watauga) led the team with 14 kills, while Guignon and junior outside hitter Allison Webb (Thousand Oaks, Calif./Westlake) added nine kills each.

Sophomore outside hitter Kiera Borthwick (Northville, Mich./Northville) tallied 18 digs and four kills, and senior outside hitter Elly Cosgrove (Wilmington, N.C./John T. Hoggard) had 17 digs. Junior setter Anna Soroka (Mechanicsville, Va./Lee-Davis) totaled 21 assists and eight digs.

Senior right-side hitter Lauren Carpenter notched 16 kills and nine digs to pace OWU. Senior defensive specialist Nina Carmichael-Tanaka registered a match-high 19 digs. Hale added 11 kills.    

The Generals finish up play at the Otterbein/Capital Fall Classic on Saturday at Capital's campus. W&L takes on fourth-ranked Wittenberg at 10:00 am and Otterbein at 2:00 pm.
