W&L Volleyball Drops Season-Opener to Muskingum, 3-2

WESTERVILLE, Ohio — The Washington and Lee volleyball team rallied from a 2-0 deficit to force a fifth set against Muskingum on Friday at the Otterbein/Capital Fall Classic, but the Muskies pulled out the final stanza to earn a 3-2 victory over the Generals in the season-opening contest for both teams.

The Blue and White (0-1) dropped the first two sets, 25-23 and 25-18. In the third, the Generals fell behind, 8-3, but then tallied six of the next seven points to even the set, 9-9. With the score knotted a few points later, 11-11, W&L then scored six straight points, with junior outside hitter Allison Webb (Thousand Oaks, Calif./Westlake) notching two kills during the spurt, to grab a 17-11 advantage. The Blue and White maintained its lead the rest of the set, taking the third, 25-17.

The Generals assumed a 10-7 lead to open the fourth, and then went on an 8-2 run to extend their margin to 18-10. The Muskies (1-0) eventually trimmed the deficit to 22-19, but three straight points (25-19) by W&L pushed the match to a fifth set.

Muskingum responded in the final stanza by scoring the first four points. Webb put the Blue and White on the board with a kill, but the Muskies then went on a 7-2 spurt to take an 11-3 lead before closing out the match, 15-5, in the fifth.

Senior outside hitter Meg Guignon (St. Louis, Mo./Visitation Academy) totaled 14 kills in the match with one error for a .302 hitting percentage. She also had 16 digs. Sophomore outside hitter Kiera Borthwick (Northville, Mich./Northville) led the team with 18 digs and added four blocks.

Sophomore outside hitter Brynne Gould (Boone, N.C./Watauga) recorded 14 kills and seven digs. Junior setter Anna Soroka (Mechanicsville, Va./Lee-Davis) tallied 19 assists and 14 digs, while junior setter Mollie Ray (Charlotte, N.C./Charlotte Catholic) had 18 assists and seven digs. Webb registered 10 kills and four blocks.

Sophomore outside hitter Brooke Fatheree led Muskingum with 17 kills and 15 digs. Sophomore outside hitter  Jessica Cottle had a match-high 22 digs, while sophomore setter Erin Dickson totaled 38 assists, 10 digs and four kills.

The Generals play Ohio Wesleyan later on Friday at 8:00 pm at the classic.
