W&L Volleyball Takes Top Spot in ODAC Preseason Poll

W&L volleyball team celebrates a point

FOREST, Va. — The Old Dominion Athletic Conference announced its 2018 volleyball preseason coaches' poll on Wednesday, and Washington and Lee earned the top spot out of 13 schools with 139 points and seven first-place votes.

Defending league champion Randolph-Macon was picked second with 138 points and six first-place nods. Virginia Wesleyan was third with 116 points, Bridgewater (112 points) secured fourth and Lynchburg (100 points) rounded out the Top 5.

Roanoke took the sixth spot with 85 points, Guilford (83 points) was seventh and Eastern Mennonite (60 points) was picked eighth. Randolph (50 points), Shenandoah (48 points), Emory & Henry (38 points), league newcomer Ferrum (33 points) and Hollins (12 points) completed the poll.

The Blue and White fell in the ODAC Championship match last fall, 3-2, and finished the season 24-10 overall and 10-1 in league play. W&L returns 15 letterwinners from last year's team, highlighted by senior outside hitter Meg Guignon (St. Louis, Mo./Visitation Academy), sophomore middle blocker Courtney Berry (Charlottesville, Va./Western Albemarle) and sophomore outside hitter Brynne Gould (Boone, N.C./Watauga). The Generals also bring in four newcomers.

Guignon earned AVCA Honorable Mention All-America accolades last year and was an AVCA First Team All-Region and First Team All-ODAC honoree. She led the ODAC in kills (342) and was 10th in the league in digs (383). Guignon enters the season needing just 43 more kills to reach 1,000 for her career, which would make her the 12th player in program history to reach the milestone.

Berry was the ODAC and VaSID Rookie of the Year in her first season, while also earning First Team All-ODAC and AVCA Honorable Mention All-Region laurels. She was fourth in Division III in total blocks (135), which set a new W&L first-year record and was the third-highest single-season total in program history.

Gould garnered Second Team All-ODAC honors in her first year, and she was second in the conference in kills (313). Gould had double-digit kills in 14 matches and double-digit digs in seven contests.

W&L opens the 2018 season on August 31 against Muskingum (4:00 pm) and Ohio Wesleyan (8:00 pm) at the Otterbein/Capital Fall Classic in Westerville, Ohio.
