ATLANTA, Ga. — First-year outside hitter Emmy Kilgore totaled a match-high 18 kills, along with 12 digs, to lead Birmingham Southern to a 3-1 victory over the Washington and Lee volleyball team on Friday at the Emory National Invitational.
The Panthers (16-7) claimed the first set, 25-18, and the Generals (20-7) evened the match, 1-1, by taking the second (25-16). The two squads were tied, 13-13, midway through the third stanza, following a kill by W&L junior outside hitter Meg Guignon (St. Louis, Mo./Visitation Academy).
BSC then went on a 7-3 run, highlighted by two kills from sophomore defensive specialist Ashley Dodson, to gain a 20-16 advantage. The teams exchanged points the rest of the set, as the Panthers grabbed a 2-1 edge in the match by winning the third, 25-20.
Carrying the momentum over to the fourth, Birmingham Southern tallied eight of the first 11 points to assume an 8-3 lead. The Panthers never let the margin drop below four the rest of the set, as they closed out the match, 25-14.
Guignon led the Generals with 14 kills and 11 digs, while senior defensive specialist Katie Volk (Lancaster, Calif./Quartz Hill) controlled the back row with 15 digs. Sophomore outside hitter Allison Webb (Thousand Oaks, Calif./Westlake) added nine kills and eight digs.
Senior Elena West (Roanoke, Va./Northside) and sophomore Anna Soroka (Mechanicsville, Va./Lee-Davis) split the setting duties for the Blue and White. West had 19 assists and four digs, while Soroka chipped in 15 assists and three digs.
Along with Kilgore's 18 kills, sophomore middle blocker Julia Denby added nine. Junior libero Melaina Hissam totaled a match-high 22 digs to lead the back row. Senior setter Rachel Lee notched 40 assists, three digs and three kills.
The Generals play at eighth-ranked Emory later on Friday at 4:30 pm.
