WINCHESTER, Va. – The Washington and Lee volleyball team cruised to a 25-20, 25-23, 25-18 victory over Shenandoah on Tuesday evening at Shingleton Gymnasium.
In the opening set, the Generals (21-6, 10-1) led just 17-16, but scored eight of the final 12 points to take a 1-0 lead. Leading 22-20, W&L sophomore outside hitter Ashleigh Meade (Bristow, Va. / Patriot) produced a kill and then teamed with first-year middle blocker Courtney Berry (Charlottesville, Va. / Western Albemarle) for a block that made it 24-20. Berry then closed out the set with another block on an attack from Shenandoah first-year outside hitter Sabrina Semo.
The Hornets (9-17, 3-8) opened up an 18-15 lead in the second set only to see W&L go on a 9-1 run to take a 24-19 lead in posting the two-point win. First-year outside hitter Brynne Gould (Boone, N.C. / Watauga) keyed the Generals' run with a pair of kills.
Shenandoah opened an early lead once again in the third set, taking a 14-9 advantage, before W&L finished with a 16-4 run. Gould once again sparked the surge with four kills in the final 16 points for W&L, while Berry had three kills and one block assist during the decisive stretch.
For the match, the Generals limited Shenandoah to a -.036 hitting percentage on 111 total attempts. Gould led W&L with 13 kills and 10 digs, while sophomore outside hitter Allison Webb (Thousand Oaks, Calif. / Westlake) had 10 kills and six digs. Junior outside hitter Meg Guignon (St. Louis, Mo. / Visitation Academy) tallied six kills and 13 digs and Berry posted five kills and seven blocks. Senior defensive specialist Katie Volk (Lancaster, Calif. / Quartz Hill) and first-year outside hitter Kiera Borthwick (Northville, Mich. / Northville) added 10 digs apiece.
Shenandoah was led by senior outside hitter Kaitlyn Kelly, who notched seven kills and six digs. Semo chipped in five kills and eight digs.
Washington and Lee returns to action on Friday and Saturday, as it takes part in the Emory National Invitational. The Generals open with Birmingham Southern on Friday at 12:00 pm.
