LEXINGTON, Va. — The Washington and Lee volleyball team registered a .327 hitting percentage, as it swept Roanoke, 3-0, on Friday at the Warner Center.
Junior outside hitter Meg Guignon (St. Louis, Mo./Visitation Academy) led the Generals (18-6, 8-1 ODAC) with a match-high 16 kills on just 31 attempts with one error for a .484 hitting percentage. She also registered a match-high 15 digs.
The Blue and White totaled 42 kills and eight errors on 104 attempts to reach the .327 mark. The Maroons (8-13, 4-5 ODAC) hit just .073 with 26 kills and 18 errors on 110 attempts.
W&L scored 13 of the opening 16 points of the match to grab a 13-3 lead in the first. Despite trailing 20-10 later in the stanza, Roanoke responded with an 8-2 run to trim the margin to 22-18.
Following a timeout, the Generals closed out the set, 25-18, with a kill by first-year outside hitter Brynne Gould (Boone, N.C./Watauga), an ace by junior outside hitter Elly Cosgrove (Wilmington, N.C./John T. Hoggard) and then an attack error by the Maroons.
The two squads were tied, 7-7, early in the second, but a 7-2 run by the Generals, pushed W&L to a 14-9 advantage. Roanoke slowly whittled the lead down to one, 24-23, but a kill by sophomore outside hitter Ashleigh Meade (Bristow, Va./Patriot) gave the Blue and White the second, 25-23.
With the score knotted at 9-9 in the third, W&L won five consecutive rallies to take a 14-9 lead. The Maroons would only score five more points the rest of the set, as the Generals closed out the match by claiming the third, 25-14.
Meade notched eight kills and one error on only 17 attempts for a .412 hitting percentage. Senior setter Elena West (Roanoke, Va./Northside) contributed 22 assists. Senior defensive specialist Katie Volk (Lancaster, Calif./Quartz Hill) had 13 digs. Gould registered eight kills on 20 attempts for a .400 hitting percentage.
Junior outside hitter Sydney Daniel led the Maroons with seven kills, while senior outside hitter Kylah Blackmore totaled 15 digs and six kills.
The Generals host a tri-match on Saturday. W&L will face Hollins at 11:00 am, and the three Blue and White seniors will be honored before the match. The Generals then take on John Wesley at 3:30 pm.
