LEXINGTON, Va. — Junior outside hitter Meg Guignon (St. Louis, Mo./Visitation Academy) notched a season-high 19 kills on a .447 hitting percentage to lead the Washington and Lee volleyball team to a 3-0 sweep over Averett on Tuesday at the Warner Center. The victory snapped the Cougars' (24-3) 17-match winning streak.
The Generals (17-6) held a 13-7 lead in the opening set to force an AU timeout. Averett responded with seven straight points to grab a 14-13 advantage. With the teams tied at 18-18 later in the set, W&L went on a 4-0 run, highlighted by two kills by Guignon, to push the margin to 22-18. The Generals eventually claimed the set, 25-21.
In the second, the score was knotted, 14-14, but after a service error by the Cougars, the Blue and White tallied eight consecutive points with junior outside hitter Elly Cosgrove (Wilmington, N.C./John T. Hoggard) serving, to assume a 23-14 lead. The Generals went on to take the second, 25-17.
The two squads went back-and-forth for much of the third, with the score tied, 23-23, late in the stanza. AU took a one-point edge (24-23) after a kill by senior outside hitter Sarah Smoot. W&L fought off a set point on a kill by Guignon.
The Cougars regained a one-point lead, 25-24, off a kill by sophomore right side Brianna Williams. Once again the Generals were up to the challenge, as a kill by first-year outside hitter Brynne Gould (Boone, N.C./Watauga) tied the score (25-25). First-year middle blocker Courtney Berry (Charlottesville, Va./Western Albemarle) gave W&L a 26-25 lead after a kill on an overpass, and then an AU attack error ended the set (27-25) and the match.
Guignon need just 38 total attempts to register her 19 kills with only two errors. Senior setter Elena West (Roanoke, Va./Northside) registered 27 assists, which moved her career total to 2,210. She is now third on the W&L all-time list, as she passed Alison Beard's '98 career total of 2,192.
Cosgrove led the back row with 15 digs, and senior defensive specialist Katie Volk (Lancaster, Calif./Quartz Hill) chipped in 12 digs. First-year outside hitter Kiera Borthwick (Northville, Mich./Northville) totaled a match-high six blocks. Gould added nine kills on 18 attempts with no errors (.500 hitting percentage).
Senior outside hitter Hannah Shields led the Cougars with 11 kills and 13 digs. Junior defensive specialist Emily Stanley recorded 15 digs.
