VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. — Junior outside hitter Meg Guignon (St. Louis, Mo./Visitation Academy) totaled a double-double, and the Washington and Lee volleyball team swept Mary Washington, 3-0, on Saturday in a neutral-site contest at Virginia Wesleyan.
The Eagles (11-8) controlled the match early in the first set, holding an 18-12 advantage. The Generals scored six straight points, capped on back-to-back aces by senior defensive specialist Katie Volk (Lancaster, Calif./Quartz Hill), to even set at 18-18.
With the match tied (19-19) two points later, sophomore outside hitter Allison Webb (Thousand Oaks, Calif./Westlake) notched two consecutive aces, and then a kill by first-year outside hitter Brynne Gould (Boone, N.C./Watauga) gave the Blue and White a 22-19 advantage. The Generals went on to win the stanza, 25-22.
W&L held a 7-6 edge in the second, but then won seven straight rallies to assume a 14-6 lead. The eight-point margin proved to be the difference in the set, as the Blue and White took the second, 25-17.
The two squads were tied, 8-8, in the third, and then W&L went on a 10-2 run to take an 18-10 lead. UMW rallied late, but the Generals held on for a 25-19 win in the set to close out the match.
Guignon had 10 kills and a team-high 16 digs to lead W&L. Volk totaled 12 digs, three aces and four assists. Gould and Webb each notched seven kills. Senior Elena West (Roanoke, Va./Northside) and sophomore Mollie Ray (Charlotte, N.C./Charlotte Catholic) split the setting duties. West had 14 assists and six digs, and Ray added 11 assists and seven digs.
Sophomore outside hitter Savannah Powers led the Eagles with 12 kills. Senior libero Jenna Yost had a match-high 23 digs. First-year setter Wren Berry registered 27 assists.
The win avenged a 3-0 loss earlier this season at Mary Washington on September 23. The Generals next play on Tuesday, when they host Averett at 7:00 pm.
