Virginia Beach, Va. — First-year outside hitter Brynne Gould (Boone, N.C./Watauga) totaled a match-high 14 kills to lead the Washington and Lee volleyball team to a 3-1 win at Virginia Wesleyan on Saturday.
The Marlins (13-7, 6-2 ODAC) made quick work of the Generals (15-6, 7-1 ODAC) in the opening set, 25-16. W&L returned the favor in the second, 25-16, to even the match. In the third, the Blue and White scored seven of the first nine points, including three kills by junior outside hitter Meg Guignon (St. Louis, Mo./Visitation Academy), to grab a 7-2 advantage.
VWU answered with a 7-3 spurt to trim the deficit to 10-7, but the Generals tallied six straight points to take a commanding 16-7 lead. W&L went on to win the third, 25-13.
In the fourth, the Blue and White led, 23-19, but the Marlins won five consecutive points to take a 24-23 edge. Sophomore setter Mollie Ray (Charlotte, N.C./Charlotte Catholic) notched a kill to tie the set, 24-24, and then an attack error by Virginia Wesleyan gave W&L a chance to close out the match. Gould ended the contest with a kill, as the Generals claimed the fourth, 26-24.
Gould recorded her 14 kills on just 35 attempts with only three errors for a .314 hitting percentage. Guignon contributed 12 kills and nine digs. First-year middle blocker Courtney Berry (Charlottesville, Va./Western Albemarle) tallied eight kills, five blocks and four digs.
Senior setter Elena West (Roanoke, Va./Northside) notched 22 assists and nine digs. Senior defensive specialist Katie Volk (Lancaster, Calif./Quartz Hill) had 14 digs and nine assists, while Ray added 11 assists, 11 digs and three kills.
Sophomore outside hitter Elizabeth Britton led the Marlins with 12 kills on a .346 hitting percentage. Junior outside hitter Doneisha Hall chipped in 11 kills.
The Generals play Mary Washington later on Saturday in a neutral-site match at Virginia Wesleyan.
