LEXINGTON, Va. — The Washington and Lee volleyball team was edged by two points in the fifth set, 15-13, as the Generals fell to Randolph-Macon, 3-2, on Wednesday at the Warner Center.
In the fifth, the Yellow Jackets (15-4, 7-0 ODAC) scored the opening point, but the Blue and White (14-6, 6-1 ODAC) responded with four straight, capped on a kill by junior outside hitter Meg Guignon (St. Louis, Mo./Visitation Academy), to take a 4-1 lead.
After another point by R-MC, W&L won back-to-back rallies to grab a 6-2 advantage and force a Yellow Jackets' timeout. Randolph-Macon answered with a 6-2 spurt to tie the score at 8-8. The Generals regained a two-point edge (11-9), after winning three of the next four points.
The Yellow Jackets then used back-to-back kills by senior outside hitter Rebecca McGilvery to ignite a 4-0 run and claim a 13-11 lead. A kill by first-year middle blocker Courtney Berry (Charlottesville, Va./Western Albemarle) trimmed the deficit to one (13-12), but following a W&L attack error, R-MC had two chances at match point, leading 14-12.
The Blue and White fought off the first with a kill by sophomore outside hitter Ashleigh Meade (Bristow, Va./Patriot), 14-13, but junior right side hitter Mariah Clark ended the match with a kill to help R-MC escape with the victory.
The Yellow Jackets won the first set, 25-22, to grab an early advantage, but W&L took the second, 25-19, and the third, 25-23, to claim a 2-1 lead. R-MC used a late rally to win the fourth, 25-20, and force the fifth and deciding set.
Guignon led the team in kills with 16 and also had five digs. Senior defensive specialist Katie Volk (Lancaster, Calif./Quartz Hill) led the back row with 18 digs. Junior outside hitter Elly Cosgrove (Wilmington, N.C./John T. Hoggard) totaled 14 digs.
Senior setter Elena West (Roanoke, Va./Northside) had a season-high 31 assists to go with six digs. Berry was the only General to hit over .200 in the match. She had nine kills on 20 attempts with three errors for a .300 hitting percentage. She also added four blocks. First-year outside hitter Kiera Borthwick (Northville, Mich./Northville) notched six blocks, seven digs and three assists.
Sophomore outside hitter Miranda Hall led the Yellow Jackets with 20 kills on 48 attempts with just four errors for a .333 hitting percentage. She also had seven digs. Senior defensive specialist Samantha Sallade had a match-high 26 digs, and Clark tallied 13 kills, eight digs and five assists.
The Generals return to action on Saturday for a tri-match. W&L will play at Virginia Wesleyan at 11:00 am, and then play a neutral-site contest against Mary Washington at 1:00 pm.
