FREDERICKSBURG, Va. — The Washington and Lee volleyball team fell at Mary Washington, 3-0, on Saturday in a close match where each set was decided by three or fewer points.
The Eagles (7-6) edged the Generals (12-2) in the first set, 25-22, and then again fended off W&L in the second, 30-28. UMW then closed out the match in the third, 25-22.
First-year outside hitter Brynne Gould (Boone, N.C./Watauga) led the Blue and White with 11 kills. She also added 11 digs. Junior outside hitter Meg Guignon (St. Louis, Mo./Visitation Academy) and first-year middle blocker Courtney Berry (Charlottesville, Va./Western Albemarle) each totaled nine kills. Berry also had four blocks and six digs, while Guignon chipped in 12 digs.
Sophomore outside hitter Ashleigh Meade (Bristow, Va./Patriot) notched seven kills. Sophomore Mollie Ray (Charlotte, N.C./Charlotte Catholic) and senior Elena West (Roanoke, Va./Northside) split the setting duties. Ray had 16 assists, while West recorded 14. Senior defensive specialist Katie Volk (Lancaster, Calif./Quartz Hill) led the back row with 18 digs.
The loss ended the Generals' 11-match winning streak. W&L returns to action on Wednesday, when it plays at Bridgewater at 7:00 pm.
