ASHLAND, Va. — Randolph-Macon junior outside hitter Rebecca McGilvery totaled a match-high 18 kills to lead the Yellow Jackets past the Washington and Lee volleyball team, 3-1, on Wednesday at Crenshaw Gymnasium.
The Generals (16-4, 6-1 ODAC) won the first set, 25-21, while hitting .341 (16 kills and two errors on 41 attempts) as a team. R-MC (15-4, 7-0 ODAC) grabbed an early lead in the second and led, 14-7, after 21 points.
W&L responded with a 10-3 run to tie the score, 17-17. The teams went back and forth over the next 12 points with the Blue and White holding a 24-22 advantage. R-MC fought off two set points with back-to-back kills by first-year outside hitter Kai Cunningham. The Yellow Jackets would continue to thwart the Generals, fighting off six set points before winning the stanza, 30-28.
The two teams continued to trade points in the third, but R-MC pulled away at the end to claim a 25-20 victory. The Yellow Jackets used the momentum of the third to take the fourth, 25-17, and win the match.
Sophomore outside hitters Meg Guignon (St. Louis, Mo./Visitation Academy) and Elly Cosgrove (Wilmington, N.C./John T. Hoggard) led the Generals with 11 kills each. Guignon added 16 digs, while Cosgrove had 11. Senior middle blocker Mackenzie Shand (Saline, Mich./Saline) notched 10 kills.
Junior defensive specialist Katie Volk (Lancaster, Calif./Quartz Hill) totaled a team-high 17 digs. Junior setter Elena West (Roanoke, Va./Northside) had 21 assists, which pushed her career total to 1,741. She moved into eighth on the W&L all-time list, passing Pam Saulsbury '01 (1,722). Megan Steinhardt '10 is seventh all-time with 1,751.
Along with her 18 kills, McGilvery also had 11 digs. Junior defensive specialist Samantha Sallade totaled a match-high 23 digs, and sophomore outside hitter Mariah Clark had 13 kills and seven digs.
The Generals return to action on Friday, when they host Lynchburg at 6:30 pm.
