HARRISONBURG, Va. — The Washington and Lee volleyball team recorded a .351 hitting percentage to earn a 3-0 sweep at Eastern Mennonite on Friday at Yoder Arena.
The first set was tied, 9-9, but the Generals (9-1, 1-0 ODAC) scored five straight points to take a 14-9 lead. The Blue and White then outscored the Royals (5-6, 0-2 ODAC), 11-6, over the next 17 points to win the set, 25-15.
The second stanza was also tied, 9-9, but W&L tallied 10 of 13 points, highlighted by two kills from sophomore outside hitter Meg Guignon (St. Louis, Mo./Visitation Academy), to grab a 19-12 advantage. The Generals would go on to claim the set, 25-20. In the final frame, the Blue and White raced out to a 10-5 lead, spearheaded by four kills from Guignon, en route to a 25-15 win in the set.
W&L totaled 35 kills on 77 attempts with just eight errors to tally its .351 hitting percentage. Conversely, EMU had 23 kills and 23 errors in 90 attempts for a .000 hitting percentage.
Guignon led all players with 12 kills and added eight digs. Sophomore outside hitter Elly Cosgrove (Wilmington, N.C./John T. Hoggard) did a little bit of everything with 10 kills, seven digs, four blocks and three service aces. Junior setter Elena West (Roanoke, Va./Northside) notched 24 assists, six digs and two kills.
Senior middle blocker Mackenzie Shand (Saline, Mich./Saline) contributed five kills and five blocks. With her five blocks, Shand pushed her career total to 344, passing Kassie Bagley '09 for third on the W&L career list. Susan Gaillard '06 is second (412) and Virginia Yoerg '97 holds the all-time mark with 413.
Junior outside hitter Janna Williams led the Royals with seven kills. Junior defensive specialist Skyler Johnson had nine digs, and junior setter Jasmine Johnson added 14 assists and six digs.
The Generals play two matches on Saturday. W&L will play at Bridgewater at 11:00 am, and then take on Meredith in a neutral-site contest at Bridgewater at 1:00 pm.
