ASHLAND, Va. — Sophomore middle blocker Mackenzie Shand (Saline, Mich./Saline) recorded a career-high 11 total blocks to lead the Washington and Lee volleyball team to a 3-2 victory at Randolph-Macon on Saturday.
The Generals (20-4, 7-2 ODAC) lost the first set, 25-20, but then won the next two, 25-14 and 25-21, to take a 2-1 lead in the match. The Yellow Jackets (15-7, 8-1 ODAC) responded by claiming the fourth, 25-22.
W&L jumped out to a 6-4 lead in the fifth, but R-MC went on a 6-2 run to take a 10-8 advantage. The Blue and White came back and tied the set at 13-13. From there, both teams had an opportunity to tally match point, but junior outside hitter Anna Lausberg (Ocoee, Fla./Bishop Moore Catholic) secured the victory for the Generals with a kill to win the fifth, 18-16.
Shand notched two solo blocks and nine assisted to reach her total, which tied for the second-most in a match in program history. Leslie Fischbeck also registered 11 against Roanoke in 2001. Virginia Yoerg holds the all-time record with 12 against Gallaudet in 1996.
On the offensive side, Shand tallied 10 kills on 24 attempts with only one error for a .375 hitting percentage. She also had five digs. Lausberg recorded a double-double with a team-high 15 kills and 13 digs. First-year setter Elena West (Roanoke, Va./Northside) also had a double-double with career-highs in assists (42) and digs (15).
First-year defensive specialist Katie Volk (Lancaster, Calif./Quartz Hill) tallied a career-high 23 digs, and junior outside hitter Kasey Cannon (North Wales, Pa./Mt. St. Joseph Academy) had nine kills and 17 digs.
Junior outside hitter Courtney Lowers led the Yellow Jackets with a match-high 17 kills. She also added 14 digs. First-year defensive specialist Samantha Sallade notched a match-high 26 digs.
The Generals play Franklin & Marshall later on Saturday in a neutral-site contest.
