LEXINGTON, Ky. — The American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA) announced on Monday that 676 teams have earned the AVCA Team Academic Award for the 2013-14 season, and Washington and Lee was one of 126 Division III teams honored.
The total number of squads receiving the recognition this year breaks the previous year's total of 623 and sets a new all-time high for this award.
The Generals completed the 2013 season with a 28-7 overall record and a 10-1 mark in the conference. W&L won the ODAC Championship and advanced to the NCAA Tournament before falling to Berry in the opening round. It marked the second straight league title for the Blue and White and the 14th in program history.
The AVCA Team Academic Award, which was initiated in the 1992-93 academic year, honors collegiate and high school volleyball teams that displayed excellence in the classroom during the school year by maintaining at least a 3.30 cumulative team grade point average on a 4.0 scale or a 4.10 cumulative team GPA on a 5.0 scale.
The Generals open the 2014 season on August 29 at the Captains Classic hosted by Christopher Newport.
