LEXINGTON, Va. — In the quarterfinals of the ODAC Tournament, the top-seeded Washington and Lee volleyball team defeated eighth-seeded Shenandoah, 3-0, on Wednesday in the Warner Center.
The Generals (26-6) claimed the first set, 25-13, totaling seven service aces, including the final two points on aces by sophomore outside hitter Anna Lausberg (Ocoee, Fla./Bishop Moore Catholic). Neither team could gain separation in the second, with the squads tied, 20-20, late in the set.
Sophomore middle blocker Jenna Gustafson (San Diego, Calif./Francis Parker School) served out the final five points to win the set, 25-20. The Generals led 23-22, in the third, and closed out the Hornets (14-17) on kills by senior outside hitter M.A. Boles (Houston, Texas/St. John's) and first-year middle blocker Mackenzie Shand (Saline, Mich./Saline).
Boles registered a match-high 17 kills on a .424 hitting percentage. She also contributed six digs. Lausberg notched 10 kills and finished with five aces, two assists, two digs and two blocks.
Senior setter Meghan Meleski (Richmond, Va./Mills Godwin) tallied 39 assists, three service aces and seven digs. Shand ended the night with nine kills, and Gustafson recorded five aces.
Senior middle blocker Haley Smith (Winchester, Va./James Wood) led Shenandoah with seven kills. First-year setter Jasmine Callahan (Forest, Va./Jefferson Forest) registered 15 assists, and senior outside hitter Katy Griffith (Pembroke, Va./Giles) had a match-high 10 digs.
With the victory the Generals will host both ODAC semifinals and the championship match on Saturday. W&L will play fifth-seeded Roanoke in the first semifinal at 10 am.
