NEWPORT NEWS, Va. — The Washington and Lee volleyball team fell, 3-0, at fifth-ranked Christopher Newport on Tuesday. It ended a three-match winning streak for the Generals, while the Captains won their ninth-straight match.
W&L stayed close in the first two sets, but CNU pulled away in the third to secure a 25-19, 25-22, 25-8 victory. The loss dropped the Generals to 14-7 with the Captains improving to 17-2.
Junior outside hitter M.A. Boles (Houston, Texas/St. John's) led the team with 13 kills and five digs. First-year outside hitter Anna Lausberg (Ocoee, Fla./Bishop Moore Catholic) added five kills. Junior setter Meghan Meleski (Richmond, Va./Mills Godwin) tallied 12 assists and seven digs. First-year defensive specialist Kasey Cannon (North Wales, Pa./Mt. St. Joseph Academy) led the back row with a team-high nine digs.
The Captains had two players with double-digit kills. Junior middle blocker Bailey Jensen led the team with 13 and senior right side Christie Fellows totaled 10. Senior defensive specialist Abby Hogge had a match-high 20 digs, and senior setter Alyssa Kidd recorded a double-double with 33 assists and 11 digs.
Christopher Newport hit .367 for the match, while W&L hit .136. The Captains totaled six service aces compared to three for Generals, but the Blue and White led in total blocks, 6-5.
The Generals return to action next week when they host Shenandoah Tuesday, October 9, at 7:00 pm.
