LEXINGTON, Va. — Using only eight players the entire match, the Washington and Lee volleyball team cruised to a 3-0 win over Mary Baldwin at the Warner Center on Saturday.
The Generals (11-4, 5-0 ODAC) jumped on the Fighting Squirrels (0-10) early with a 25-6 victory in the opening set. MBC clawed back into the match in the second, but W&L held on to win, 25-20. In the third, Washington and Lee took a 20-15 lead, and won the final five points to win the set, 25-15.
First-year outside hitter Mansie Hough (St. Petersburg, Fla./Canterbury School) led all players with 12 kills. She hit .375 on 24 attempts and recorded eight digs. The kills and digs each marked season highs. Joining Hough with 10-or-more kills was first-year outside hitter Christina Kamis (Leesburg, Va./Heritage). She had a season-high 10 kills, while hitting .333.
On the defensive side, first-year right-side Maddie Kosar (Chagrin Falls, Ohio/Gilmour Academy) and first-year outside hitter Kasey Cannon (North Wales, Pa. / Mt. St. Joseph Academy) each had nine digs. Sophomore middle blocker Rachel Guarisco (Tuscaloosa, Ala./Holy Spirit Catholic) led the team in total blocks with four.
Sophomore outside hitter Kharla Bethea (Chesapeake, Va./Deep Creek) led Mary Baldwin with six kills, while first-year libero Kayla Wheeler (Fort Defiance, Va./Fort Defiance) led all players with 11 digs.
The Generals return to ODAC play on Wednesday, September 26, when they travel to defending tournament champion Randolph-Macon for a 7:00 pm match. The Yellow Jackets are the only other team in the ODAC without a conference loss.
