LEXINGTON, Va. — With the play of first-year setter Alex Kinzer (Greenville, S.C./Eastside), the Washington and Lee volleyball team beat Emory & Henry, 3-1, Wednesday night at the Warner Center.
The 25-16, 24-26, 25-23, 25-16 victory kept the Generals (9-4, 4-0 ODAC) unbeaten in conference play, and ended the Wasps (10-4, 1-2 ODAC) three-match winning streak.
In only her sixth match of the season, Kinzer tallied a season-high 48 assists, which also marked the most by any W&L player in a match this year. Kinzer added six digs, two aces, two kills and four total blocks. Her ball distribution led to four Generals totaling 10-or-more kills, with junior outside hitter M.A. Boles (Houston, Texas/St. John's School) leading all players with 18.
The Generals took the first set relatively easy, 25-16, but Emory & Henry picked up its play in the second. The Wasps jumped out to a 5-0 lead, behind mistake-free volleyball. They did not commit a service error in the set, and did not allow an ace. With their strong serve and return game, the Wasps held off a late charge by W&L and claimed the second, 26-24.
Washington and Lee regrouped in the third, taking an early lead. Throughout the set, the Generals held the advantage until a Nicole Tesh (Boone, N.C./Watauga) kill tied the score at 22. W&L claimed the third, 25-23, by winning three of the next four points on a Mansie Hough (St. Petersburg, Fla./Canterbury School) kill, an Allison Rouse (Troy, Mich./Troy) ace and a Boles kill.
With the momentum of the win in the third, W&L secured the victory in the fourth, 25-16. Along with her 18 kills, Boles recorded a double-double with 12 digs. Three other Generals totaled 10 kills in sophomore middle blocker Katie Toomb (Lebanon, Ore./Lebanon), sophomore middle blocker Rachel Guarisco (Tuscaloosa, Ala./Holy Spirit Catholic) and senior right-side player Taylor Maxey (Poway, Calif./The Bishop's School). The 10 kills were season-highs for Guarisco and Maxey.
First-year right-side player Maddie Kosar (Chagrin Falls, Ohio/Gilmour Academy) led the back row with 14 digs, while Toomb led the team in aces with four. The team hit .324 for the match on 145 attempts.
Senior outside hitter Jamie Cockerham (Galax, Va./Galax) led the Wasps with 12 kills, while Tesh and first-year outside hitter Hannah Stewart (Boone, N.C./Watauga) added 11.
