LEXINGTON, Va. — The Washington and Lee volleyball team held a 2-1 set lead over Averett on Saturday in the Warner Center, but the Cougars won the final two sets to take the match, 3-2.
The 25-19, 19-25, 15-25, 25-22, 15-8 loss dropped the Generals to 8-4, while Averett improved to 6-5.
In both the fourth and fifth sets, W&L fell behind early and was not able to come all the way back to secure a victory. In the fourth, The Cougars took a 15-6 lead, while the Generals eventually cut the deficit to 21-19, Averett held on to win the set. In the fifth, the Cougars jumped out to a 7-0 lead and held on in the shortened final set, 15-8.
The Cougars' junior outside hitter Allison Sparks (Ruffin, N.C./Rockingham County) led all players in kills with 18 and digs with 15. Joining Sparks was junior right-side Megan Sawyer (Virginia Beach, Va./Ocean Lakes) with 13 kills and senior right-side Hannah Wetherald (Ellicott City, Md./Mount Hebron) with 10.
Junior setter Meghan Meleski (Richmond, Va./Mills Godwin) was the do-it-all player for the Generals with 41 assists, five digs, three kills and one ace. Junior outside hitter M.A. Boles (Houston, Texas/St. John's School) led the team with 17 kills, a new season high, and first-year Anna Lausberg (Ocoee, Fla./Bishop Moore Catholic) totaled 16 kills on a .316 hitting percentage.
