W&L Volleyball Beats Centre, 3-1, to Open Season

MARYVILLE, Tenn. — The Washington and Lee volleyball team opened the 2012 season with a 3-1 victory over Centre at the Maryville Invitational on Friday.

Despite dropping the first set, the Generals topped the Colonials, 21-25, 28-26, 25-22, 25-18, to win their season-opening match for the third straight season.

Junior outside hitter M.A. Boles (Houston, Texas/St. John's) led the team with 14 kills. Classmate Allison Rouse (Troy, Mich./Troy) added 11 kills and sophomore middle blocker Jenna Gustafson (San Diego, Calif./Francis Parker School) chipped in nine.

Leading the back row was sophomore defensive specialist Kelly McManus (Osprey, Fla./Pine View) with 18 digs. Junior setter Meghan Meleski (Richmond, Va./Mills Godwin) distributed the ball with 39 assists, and first-year right-side player Maddie Kosar (Chagrin Falls, Ohio) tallied two aces and four blocks in her first collegiate match.

The Generals competed against fourth-ranked Emory later in the day.
