JOHNSON COMPETES AT JAMES MADISON LAST CHANCE INVITATIONAL
HARRISONBURG, Va. -- Washington and Lee junior Nathan Johnson (Lexington, Va./Rockbridge County) competed in the JMU Last Chance Invitational on Saturday afternoon.
Johnson placed third overall in the 3000 meter steeplechase with school-record time of 9:29.36, narrowly missing the cut for the NCAA Championships.

W&L TRACK ATHLETES COMPETE AT LIBERTY
LYNCHBURG, Va. -- Members of the Washington and Lee track and
field team competed at the Liberty Twilight Qualifier, hosted by
Liberty University on Thursday in Lynchburg, Va.
Senior Brian Krupczak (Cohasset, Mass./Cohasset) led the Generals
in the 100 meter dash, placing second among Division III
competition with a time of 11.11. Freshman Andrew Fischer
(Middletown, N.J./Middletown South) placed second among Division
III competition in the javelin throw with a distance of 156 feet,
six inches, while junior Nathan Johnson (Lexington, Va./Rockbridge
County) placed second in his heat for the 800 meter run, clocking a
time of 1:59.63.
Both W&L squads return to action on Sat., May 8 at the James
Madison Invitational.

W&L TRACK TEAM HOSTS ODAC CHAMPIONSHIPS
LEXINGTON, Va. -- The Washington and Lee men’s and
women’s track teams both finished fourth out of five teams as
the Generals hosted the 2004 Old Dominion Athletic Conference
Championships on Saturday afternoon.
Lynchburg won both the men’s (185.5 points) and
women’s (149) competition. Trailing the Hornets on the
men’s side were Bridgewater (178), Roanoke (64), W&L
(48.5) and Eastern Mennonite (47). On the women’s side,
Eastern Mennonite finished second (119), followed by Roanoke (109),
W&L (93) and Bridgewater (53).
W&L junior Nathan Johnson (Lexington, Va./Rockbridge County)
was crowned the men’s Co-Athlete of the Meet along with
Steward White of Bridgewater, while Bridgewater’s Shane
Stevens was named the men’s Coach of the Year. Ashley Palmer
of Lynchburg was named the women’s Athlete of the Meet, while
Lynchburg’s Jack Toms and Eastern Mennonite’s Paul
Johnson split for Coach of the Year honors.
The Generals’ performance was highlighted by seven All-ODAC
performers, two individual titles and two school records. Johnson
earned his Co-Athlete of the Meet title and All-ODAC honors after
winning both the 1500 meter run (4:02.97) and the 5000 meter run
(15:59.88).
For the W&L women’s squad, junior Meredith Walker
(Travelers Rest, S.C./Christ Church Episcopal) was a three-time
All-ODAC performer, taking second in the 100 meter dash (13.21) and
anchoring both the second-place 4x100 Relay and the 4x400 Relay.
Freshman Sara Behmerwohld (San Juan Capistrano, Calif./Dana Hills),
junior Ann Tompins (McLean, Va./Potomac School) and junior Kim
Gunst (Richmond, Va./Douglas Freeman) joined Walker as All-ODAC
runners in the 4x100, clocking a school-record time of 51.68.
Behmerwohld, Gunst and freshman Huntley Rodes (Nashville,
Tenn./Harpeth Hall) also earned All-ODAC laurels in the 4x400 Relay
with a time of 4:14.82.
Behmerwold earned All-ODAC honors in the 400 meter hurdles after
taking second with a school-record time of 68.40, while junior
Emily Barker (Clifton, Va./Mount Vernon) rounded out the W&L
women’s All-ODAC athletes with a second-place throw of 32.38
meters in the javelin.
Junior Steve Chambers (Christiana, Pa./Octorara Area) took third
place in the 5000 meter run with a time of 16:08.95, while junior
Chris Walker (Franklin, Mass./Paul VI) placed third in the shot
with a 13.38 meter hurl.
Senior Brian Krupczak (Cohasset, Mass./Cohasset) rounded out the
men’s highest placewinners with third place finish in the 100
meter dash (11.31).
Both W&L squads return to action on Sat., May 1 at the Mason
Dixon Championships in Newport News, Va.

W&L TRACK TEAMS IN ACTION AT EASTERN MENNONITE INVITATIONAL
HARRISONBURG, Va. -- The Washington and Lee men’s and women’s track and field teams were in action on Saturday afternoon at the Eastern Mennonite Invitational.
The W&L women were led by junior Meredith Walker (Travelers Rest, S.C./Christ Church Episcopal), who ran a leg for the Generals’ 4x100 relay team which finished first overall with a time of 52.24. Walker also finished second in the 100 meters (13.31) and third in the long jump (16’00.00”). She was joined on the relay team by freshman Sara Behmerwohld (San Juan Capistrano, Calif./Dana Hills), and juniors Ann Tompkins (McLean, Va./Potomac School) and Kim Gunst (Richmond, Va./Douglas Freeman).
Behmerwohld also placed third in the 100 meter hurdles with a time of 16.56. Sophomore Megan Ward (Lindsay, Texas/Lindsay) won the 800 meters with a time of 2:40.50, while freshman Huntley Rodes (Nashville, Tenn./Harpeth Hall) placed second in the 400 meter hurdles (74.11) and junior Bethany Dannelly (Raleigh, N.C./Enloe) placed second in the javelin with a toss of 104’4.00”.
On the men’s side, juniors Steven Chambers (Christiana, Pa./Octorara Area) and Nathan Johnson (Lexington, Va./Rockbridge County) both won an event. Chambers completed the 1500 meters in 4:13.33 and Johnson finished the 800 meters in 2:00.41.
Freshman Andrew Fischer (Middletown, N.J./Middletown South) placed second in the javelin with a toss of 158’9.00”, while junior Chris Walker (Franklin, Mass./Paul VI) placed third in the shot put with a heave of 44’5.25”.

CONWAY, S.C. -- The Washington and Lee men’s and
women’s track teams competed against Division I competition
at the Coastal Carolina Chanticleer Classic on Saturday
afternoon.
There were no team scores kept as only individual efforts were
tracked.
On the men’s side, junior Nathan Johnson (Lexington,
Va./Rockbridge County) emerged as W&L’s lone event winner
with an 8:52.10 performance in the 3000 meter run. Junior Steve
Chambers (Christiana, Pa./Octorara Area) took third place in the
same event (9:04.09), while senior Rusty Meyer (Dallas,
Texas/Jesuit College Prep) continued the Generals’ distance
excellence with a fourth-place time of 4:12.04 in the 1500 meter
run.
Junior Chris Walker (Franklin, Mass./Paul VI) set a new W&L
school record in the hammer throw with a
119’10.5’’ throw for eleventh place, while
finishing seventh in the shot put with a distance of 13.21
meters.
On the women’s side, sophomore Betsy Frayer (Grand Rapids,
Mich./East Grand Rapids) recorded the Generals’ highest
finish of the day with a second-place, 11:08.95 clocking in the
3000 meter run. Freshman Jenny Ratzel (Elm Grove, Wisc./Brookfield
East) finished eighth in the 3000 meter run with a time of
11:55.58, while freshman Sara Behmerwohld (San Juan Capistrano,
Calif./Dana Hills) led W&L with a fifth-place finish in the 400
meter hurdles (1:10.67).

On the women’s side, freshman Sara Behmerwohld (San Juan
Capistrano, Calif./Dana Hills) led the Generals with a second-place
finish in the 400 meter hurdles (1:12.12) and a fourth-place time
of 17.75 in the 100 meter hurdles. Junior Emily Barker (Clifton,
Va./Mount Vernon) placed fourth in the shot put
(36’0.50’’), junior Meredith Walker (Travelers
Rest, S.C./Christ Church Episcopal) placed fifth in the 200 meter
dash (28.17) and freshman Huntley Rodes (Nashville, Tenn./Harpeth
Hall) placed fifth in the 400 meter dash (1:05.81).

W&L TRACK TEAMS IN ACTION AT VCU INVITATIONAL
RICHMOND, Va. -- The Washington and Lee men’s and women’s track and field teams were in action on Saturday afternoon at the VCU Ram Invitational where they competed against Division I, II and III Competition.
The W&L women’s team was paced by three athletes who placed first among Division III competitors at the meet. Junior Emily Barker (Clifton, Va./Mount Vernon) took home first place honors in the shot put with a toss of 37’.01”, a new personal record. Senior Angel Daniels (Charleston, S.C./Porter-Gaud) took top honors in the high jump with a leap of 4’10”, while freshman Sara Behmerwohld (San Juan Capistrano, Calif./Dana Hills) placed first in the 100 hurdles with a time of 16.40. Sophomore Mary Christopher (Fort Lauderdale, Fla./Cardinal Gibbons) rounded out the W&L leaders with a second place showing in the 1,500 meters (5:02.20).
On the men’s side, junior Nathan Johnson (Lexington, Va./Rockbridge County) placed first among Division III competitor’s and fourth overall in the 5,000 meters with a 15:16.31 clocking. Junior Chris Walker (Franklin, Mass./Paul VI) was second among Division III athletes in the shot put with a toss of 11.93 meters, while senior Jonathan Brimer (Dandridge, Tenn./Jefferson County) finished second against D-III competition in the 100 meters (11.67).

GENERALS HOST W&L INVITATIONAL
LEXINGTON, Va. -- The Washington and Lee men’s and
women’s track teams kicked off their outdoor seasons by
hosting the 2004 W&L Track and Field Invitational on Saturday
at Wilson Field.
On the women’s side the Generals finished fourth, while
Susquehanna took top honors with 156 points The Crusaders were
followed by Roanoke (97), Mary Washington (80), W&L (54.5),
Sewanee (49), Bridgewater (43.5), Southern Virginia (38),
Christopher Newport (26) and Berea (11). In men’s competition
W&L placed seventh, while Susquehanna won the invitational with
165 points. The Crusaders were followed by DeSales (78), Sewanee
(72), Berea (59), Mary Washington (53), Roanoke (44), W&L (30),
Bridgewater (29.5), Southern Virginia (19.5), Christopher Newport
(6) and William Penn (1).
The W&L women’s team was led by sophomore Mary
Christopher (Fort Lauderdale, Fla./Cardinal Gibbons) and freshman
Sara Behmerwohld (San Juan Capistrano, Calif./Dana Hills).
Christopher won the 800 meter run with a time of 2:26.37, while
Behmerwohld won the 400 meter hurdles with a school record time of
68.65.
Sophomore Betsy Frayer (Grand Rapids, Mich./East Grand Rapids)
emerged as a top W&L distance runner with third place in
the1500 meter run (5:09.76), while junior Emily Barker (Clifton,
Va./Mount Vernon) led the throwers with points in three events.
Barker took third in the javelin (107’5’’), third
in the shot put (36’5’’) and sixth in the discus
(102’3’’).
On the men’s side junior Chris Walker (Centreville, Va./Paul
IV) was W&L’s lone event winner, taking top honors in the
shot put with a distance of 43 feet, 10 inches. Junior Nathan
Johnson (Lexington, Va./Rockbridge County) placed second in the
1500 meter run (4:04.30), while senior Rusty Meyer (Dallas,
Texas/Jesuit College Prep) took fourth in the 800 meter run with a
time of 2:02.76.
Both W&L squads return to action on Fri., March 19 at the VCU

W&L INDOOR TRACK AT ODAC CHAMPIONSHIPS
LYNCHBURG, Va. -- The Washington and Lee men’s and
women’s indoor track teams combined for three conference
champions, a school record and 11 all-conference selections as the
Generals competed at the ODAC Championships on Saturday, hosted by
Lynchburg College.
The Generals’ women’s squad scored 52 points to earn
fourth place out of five teams, while the W&L men’s team
scored 59 points to also place fourth out of five teams. Lynchburg
took top honors in both the men’s (183) and women’s
(158) championships. On the men’s side, the Hornets were
trailed by Roanoke (87), Bridgewater (79), W&L and Eastern
Mennonite (52). On the women’s side, Lynchburg was followed
by Roanoke (126), Eastern Mennonite (77), W&L and Bridgewater
(41).
For the W&L women, sophomore Betsy Frayer (Grand Rapids,
Mich./East Grand Rapids) emerged as the Generals’ lone event
winner, earning All-ODAC accolades with top honors in the two mile
run (12:13.13).
The distance medley relay unit of junior Ann Tompkins (McLean,
Va./Potomac School), sophomore Karen Blackburn (Richmond,
Va./Monacan) and freshmen Jenny Ratzel (Elm Grove, Wisc./Brookfield
East) and Julie Harris (Richmond, Va./Saint Catherines) also earned
all-conference honors with a second-place finish (14:36.32).
The 4x400-meter relay team of Tompkins, juniors Kim Gunst
(Richmond, Va./Douglas Freeman) and Meredith Walker (Travelers
Rest, S.C./Christ Church Episcopal) and freshman Sara Behmerwohld
(San Juan Capistrano, Calif./Dana Hills) also earned All-ODAC
laurels with a second-place time of 4:32.23.
Behmerwohld bested her own program record in the 55-meter hurdles,
surpassing the old mark of 9.59 with a 9.32, fourth-place showing.
Sophomore Mary Christopher (Fort Lauderdale, Fla./Cardinal Gibbons)
rounded out the Generals’ leaders with third-place finish in
both the 800-meter run (2:38.58) and the mile (5:37.10).
On the men’s side, juniors Chris Walker (Centreville,
Va./Paul IV) and Brian Krupczak (Cohasset, Mass./Cohasset) led the
Generals with a pair of ODAC titles. Walker was a two-time
all-conference performer with top honors in the weight-throw
(49’4.25’’) and second in the shot
(43’11.75’’), while Krupczak won the 55-meter
dash and All-ODAC recognition with a time of 6.67.
Junior Nathan Johnson (Lexington, Va./Rockbridge County) rounded
out W&L’s all-conference selections with a second-place
finish in the two mile run (9:54.59). Johnson also placed third in
the mile (4:33.74), while the distance medley relay unit of senior
Rusty Meyer (Dallas, Texas/Jesuit College Prep), junior Norman
Senior (St. Catherine, Jamaica/United World College Atlantic),
sophomore Hugo Ledesma Diaz (Zapopan, Mexico/American School at
Guadalajara) and freshman David Kronenfeld (Greensboro,
N.C./Wesleyan Christian Acad.) took third with a time of
11:22.83.
The ODAC Championships mark the end of the Generals’ indoor
track season.

NEWPORT NEWS, Va. -- The Washington and Lee
men’s and women’s indoor track and field squads were in
action at the Christopher Newport University College Frolic on
Sunday. The meet included Division-I and Division-III
competition.
For the W&L women, sophomore Mary Christopher (Fort
Lauderdale, Fla./Cardinal Gibbons) finished third among D-III
competition in the mile (5:37.47) and placed fourth overall in the
800-meter run (2:28.73).
Freshmen Jenny Ratzel (Elm Grove, Wisc./Brookfield East) and Sara
Behmerwohld (San Juan Capistrano, Calif./Dana Hills) were also
among the W&L leaders. Against D-III runners, Ratzel placed
fifth in the 800-meter run (2:36.19) and Behmerwohld placed fifth
in the 55-meter dash (9.66).
On the men’s side, junior Chris Walker (Centreville,
Va./Paul IV) led the Generals with a fourth-place overall finish in
the weight-throw (43’10.5’’), while taking fourth
in D-III with a 42’0.25’’ throw in the shot put
competition.
Junior Steven Chambers (Christiana, Pa./Octorara Area) placed
eighth overall in the mile with a time of 4:31.24, while junior
Brian Krupczak (Cohasset, Mass./Cohasset) rounded out the
Generals’ leaders against D-III competition with a
fourth-place in the 200-meter dash (23.64) and a fifth-place finish
in the 60-meter dash (7.28).
Both W&L squads return to action on Sat., Feb. 28, when the
Generals travel to Lynchburg for the ODAC Indoor Championships.

W&L INDOOR TRACK AND FIELD IN ACTION AT VMI
LEXINGTON, Va. -- The Washington and Lee
men’s and women’s indoor track and field squads were in
action at the VMI Winter Relays on Saturday afternoon. The Generals
combined for two-top-place performances and a pair of school
records while competing against Division I and Division III
competition.
For the W&L women, sophomore Betsy Frayer (Grand Rapids,
Mich./East Grand Rapids) emerged as the top runner in the
3,000-meter run, besting all competitors with a time of
11:30.44.
Freshmen Kathryn Brennan (New Orleans, La./Isidore Newman) and
Sara Behmerwohld (San Juan Capistrano, Calif./Dana Hills) used
their performances to set a pair of new standards for the
Generals’ program. Brennan vaulted to a program-record mark
of 9’4.25’’ in the pole vault, while Behmerwohld
clocked W&L’s fastest-ever 55-meter hurdle time with a
9.59 performance.
Junior Meredith Walker (Travelers Rest, S.C./Christ Church
Episcopal), junior Ann Tompkins (McLean, Va./Potomac School) and
freshman Huntley Rodes (Nashville, Tenn./Harpeth Hall) were also
among the Generals’ leaders. Among Division III sprinters in
the 200-meter dash, Walker took second (29.24), Tompkins took third
(29.60) and Rodes took fourth (29.82).
For the men, juniors Nathan Johnson (Lexington, Va./Rockbridge
County) and Steven Chambers (Christiana, Pa./Octorara Area) led
W&L with the top-two finishes in the 3,000-meter run. Johnson
won the event with a 9:02.95 clocking, while Chambers crossed the
tape second in a time of 9:14.11.
Junior Chris Walker (Centreville, Va./Paul IV) took top
weight-throw honors among Division III participants with a distance
of 44’ 5.25’’, while junior Brian Krupczak
(Cohasset, Mass./Cohasset) was Division III’s second-place
finisher in the 55-meter dash with a time of 6.70 seconds.

SELINSGROVE, Pa. -- The Washington and Lee men’s and women’s indoor track and field teams were both in action on Saturday at the Susquehanna Invitational competing against Division II and Division III competition.
Leading the way for the women was junior Meredith Walker (Travelers Rest, S.C./Christ Church Episcopal), who placed three among Division III competitors in the Long Jump (15’5.34”) and eighth among DIII athletes in the 200 meters (29.09). Freshman Katherine Brennan (New Orleans, La./Isidore Newman) placed third in the pole vault with a school-record vault of 9’00.00”, while sophomore Mary Christopher (Fort Lauderdale, Fla./Cardinal Gibbons) finished third among DIII athletes in the 800 meters with a time of 2:33.77.
The W&L Distance Relay team of freshman Tippins Stone (Nashville, Tenn./Harpeth Hall), junior Anne Tompkins (McLean, Va./Potomac School), freshman Jenny Ratzel (Elm Grove, Wisc./Brookfield East) and Christopher placed second among DIII teams and third overall with a time of 13:15.00.
The W&L men were paced by junior Brian Krupczak (Cohasset, Mass./Cohasset), who placed fourth among Division III competitors in the 200 meters with a time of 23.72. Sophomore Keith Sullivan (San Antonio, Texas/Alamo Heights) placed sixth among DIII athletes in the triple jump with a leap of 39’3.00” and junior Nathan Johnson (Lexington, Va./Rockbridge County) was third among DIII athletes in the 1,500 meters with a time of 4:14.92.
The Generals will return to action on Sun., Feb. 8, when they compete in the Christopher Newport Invitational.

LEXINGTON, Va. -- The Washington and Lee indoor track and field program began its 2003-04 season by competing in the VMI Keydet Invitational against Division I and Division III competition on Saturday afternoon.
Freshman Sara Behmerwohld (San Juan Capistrano, Calif./Dana Hills) led the W&L women by placing second among Division III competitors in the 55-meter high hurdles with a time of 9.78. She also ran a leg of the Generals’ 4 x 400 meter relay team which finished second among Division III teams with a time of 4:39.00. She was joined on the relay team by juniors Meredith Walker (Travelers Rest, S.C./Christ Church Episcopal), Kim Gunst (Richmond, Va./Douglas Freeman) and Casey Sharpe (Manassas, Va./Osbourn).
Walker also placed fourth among Division III participants in the 55-meter dash with a time of 8.11, while junior Ann Tompkins (Houston, Texas/Kinkaid) placed second among DIII athletes in the 200-meter dash with a time of 29.54. Freshman Kathryn Brennan (New Orleans, La./Isidore Newman) tied for second among DIII athletes in the pole vault with a school-record vault of 8.00’.
For the men, sophomore Keith Sullivan (San Antonio, Texas/Alamo Heights) led the way by placing second among DIII athletes in the triple jump (11.90 meters) and third in the long jump (5.71 meters). Junior Lee Stinnett (Lexington, Va./Parry McCluer) finished fifth among Division III competitors in the 55-meters (7.06) and 200-meters (25.66).
