SCHMIDT CLAIMS SECOND CONSECUTIVE ODAC JAVELIN TITLE (4/22)

HARRISONBURG, Va. -- Sophomore Sarah Schmidt (Topeka, Kan./Hayden) claimed her second consecutive ODAC javelin championship in leading the Washington and Lee track teams to strong showings at the 2000 ODAC outdoor track and field championships at Eastern Mennonite University. In team scoring, the W&L men finished fifth of five teams, while the women finished fourth of five teams.

Schmidt claimed the javelin title with a conference-record toss of 116-02, more than 13 feet longer than any of her competitors. She also claimed third-place in the discus with a personal-best throw of 99-08. Other individual highlights for the Generals included multiple second- and third-place finishes. Freshman Kelly Schlicter (Littleton, Colo./Cappell) garnered runner-up honors in the 800-meter run with a time of 2:28.22. Freshman Burke Duncan (Oklahoma City, Okla./Casady) took a third-place finish in the 3,000-meter run with a time of 11:05.17.

On the men's side, junior Marc Watson (Marietta, Ga./Walton) led the way with a third-place finish in the 100-meter dash (10.98). Sophomore Mike Hegg (Seattle, Wash./Shorecrest) took home third-place honors in the110-meter high hurdles with a time of 15.48. Also finishing in third were both the 4x100 (42.46) and 4x400 (3:33.23) meter relay teams.

The event was the final team competition of W&L's outdoor season.

W&L TRACK TEAMS COMPETE AT EASTERN MENNONITE (4/15)

HARRISONBURG, Va. - The Washington and Lee men's and women's track teams competed in the Eastern Mennonite Royal Track Invitational on Saturday afternoon in Harrisonburg, Va. The men's team finished fifth of nine teams while the women's squad finished fifth of 11 teams.

On the women's side, W&L was led by sophomore Sarah Schmidt (Topeka, Kan./Hayden), who claimed first place in the javelin competition with a throw of 113-09. Schmidt edged out senior teammate Meredith Mlynar (New Fairfield, Conn./New Fairfield), who finished in second with a heave of 102-09. Also turning in strong showings for the Generals were freshman Burke Duncan (Oklahoma City, Okla./Casady) in the 3,000 meter run (3rd Place - 11:12.20), and senior Jill Kosch (Columbus, Neb./Scotus) in the 200-meter dash (27.34). Kosch's time in the 200 missed the W&L school-record by only .22 seconds.

The men's team was led by junior Marc Watson (Marietta, Ga./Walton), who finished as the runner-up in the 100-meter dash. Watson's time of 11.09 seconds placed him just ahead of senior teammate Hansell Pasco (Hilton Head, S.C./Hilton Head), who posted a time of 11.17. Sophomore Michael Hegg (Seattle, Wash./Shorecrest) finished second in the 400-meter hurdles (58.95) and third in the 110-meter high hurdles (15.90). The other highlight for the men's squad came in the high jump, where junior Jacek Mucha (Houston, Texas/AWTY International) finished as the runner-up with a leap of 5-8.

Both of W&L's teams will return to action next Saturday, as they are set to travel to the ODAC Championships.

W&L TRACK TEAMS COMPETE AT LIBERTY, DUKE RELAYS (4/8)

The Washington and Lee men's track team competed at the Liberty Invitational on Saturday, while the women's squad traveled to Durham, N.C., for the Duke Invitational. No team scoring was kept at either meet.

On the women's side, W&L faced stiff competition at the Duke University Invitational. The Generals received multiple season-best performances at the meet. One highlight came from senior Jill Kosch (Columbus, Neb./Scotus), who ran a 27.22 in the 200-meter dash. W&L also got a strong performance from senior Autumn Oczkowski (Cinnaminson, N.J./Cinnaminson) in the 800-meter run with a time of 2:27.62. Freshman Kelly Schlicter (Littleton, Colo./Cappell) also posted a personal-best time of 5:07.23 in the 1,500-meter run.

The men's team competed in the rain-shortened Liberty University Invitational. Although only 14 events were completed, W&L received several strong performances. The 4x100 meter relay team posted a time of 42.92 for a fourth-place finish. The Generals' top individual performance came from freshman Chris Sullivan (San Antonio, Texas/Alamo Heights), who finished in sixth-place in the long jump with a leap of 21-07.25.

W&L will return to action on Saturday, April 15, as both teams are set to compete in the Eastern Mennonite Invitational.

W&L TRACK TEAMS COMPETE AT BRIDGEWATER, BATTLEGROUND RELAYS (3/25)

The Washington and Lee men's track team competed at the Bridgewater College Invitational on Saturday, while the women's squad traveled to Fredericksburg, Va., for the Battleground Relays. No team scoring was kept at either meet.

On the women's side, sophomore Sarah Schmidt (Topeka, Kan./Hayden) claimed the Generals' only individual championship, winning the javelin with a toss of 122'2". Freshman Burke Duncan (Oklahoma, City, Okla./Casady) finished second in the 5,000 meter run in a time of 19:07.6.

For the men's team, junior Marc Watson (Marietta, Ga./Walton) claimed first-place in the 100-meter dash (11.13) and finished as the runner-up in the 200 (22.73). Freshman David Hicks (Alexandria, Va./West Potomac) won the 800-meter run in a career-best time of 2:00.96. Sophomore Michael Hegg (Seattle, Wash./Shorecrest) claimed the 110-meter high hurdles championship with a season-best mark of 15.66, while freshman Chris Sullivan (San Antonio, Texas/Alamo Heights) finished third in the long jump (21'9.75"). In addition, the men's 4x100 meter relay team finished second with a season-best time of 42.74.

W&L will return to action on Saturday, April 8, as the men's team travels to Lynchburg College and the women's team runs at the Duke University Invitational.

GENERALS WIN THREE CHAMPIONSHIPS AT ROANOKE (3/18)

SALEM, Va. -- The Washington and Lee track teams competed at the Roanoke College Invitational on Saturday. On the women's side, Washington and Lee claimed two individual titles. The Generals' men's squad claimed one championship.

On the men's side, the Generals were led by sophomore Michael Hegg (Seattle, Wash./Shorecrest), who claimed the championship in the 110-meter high hurdles. Hegg ran his way to victory in a season-best time of 16.19. Junior Marc Watson (Marietta, Ga./Walton) finished as the runner-up in the 100-meter dash (11.26) and in third place in the 200 (23.22).

The women's team claimed two individual titles and multiple runner-up positions. Sophomore Sarah Schmidt (Topeka, Kan./Hayden) won the javelin with a throw of 114'11". Schmidt also finished third in the discus (96'07"). Freshman Burke Duncan (Oklahoma City, Okla./Casady) continued her success, winning the 10,000 meter run in a time of 40:28.00. Senior Jill Kosch (Columbus, Neb./Scotus) garnered third and fourth place finished in the 400- and 200-meter dashes.

W&L will return to action on Saturday, March 25 as the men's team travels to Bridgewater and the women's team runs at the Battleground Relays.

GENERALS OPEN OUTDOOR TRACK SEASON WITH W&L INVITATIONAL (3/11)

LEXINGTON, Va. -- The Washington and Lee outdoor track teams opened their seasons on Saturday, hosting the 10-team W&L Invitational at Wilson Field in Lexington, Va. The W&L women's team captured the invitational championship, while the men's squad placed fourth of nine teams.

On the men's side, the Generals were led by junior Marc Watson (Marietta, Ga./Walton). Watson claimed first-place in the 100-meter dash with a time of 11.02 seconds. He also placed second in the 200-meter dash in 23.63 seconds. Also finishing in second place was the 4x100 relay team, posting a time of 43.72, thanks in large part to a tremendous anchor-leg from senior Hansell Pasco (Hilton Head, S.C./Hilton Head). The Generals placed fourth of nine squads in the team competition.

For the W&L women, senior Jill Kosch (Columbus, Neb./Scotus) led the way with wins in both the 200- and 400-meter dashes. Kosch posted a time of 28.13 to win the 200 and crossed the line in 1:02.46 to claim the 400. Freshman Kelly Schlicter (Littleton, Colo./Cappell) won the 1,500-meter run, breaking the tape in 5:08.39. Fellow freshman Burke Duncan (Oklahoma City, Okla./Casady) claimed the 3,000-meter run in a time of 11:09.24, nearly 30 seconds faster than her closest competitior. Senior Amy Calce (Williamsport, Pa./Bishop Neumann) leapt to the long jump title, clearing 15'09.5" for the win. W&L's final victory came from sophomore Sarah Schmidt (Topeka, Kan./Hayden) in the javelin. Schmidt claimed the win with a toss of 110'03.5".

W&L EXCELS AT LYNCHBURG WINTER INVITATIONAL (2/8)

LYNCHBURG, Va. -- Freshman Burke Duncan (Oklahoma City, Okla./Casady) continued her stunning freshman season, claiming Washington and Lee's only individual title at the Lynchburg College Indoor Track Invitational.

Duncan broke the tape in the mile run in a time of 5:54.74, nearly 20 seconds faster than her nearest competitor. She then ran the 800-meter leg for the victorious W&L distance medley relay squad. The wins were the only first-place finishes for the Generals in the meet.

Junior Amy Calce (Williamsport, Pa./Bishop Neumann) recorded a personal-best of 16'03" in the long jump, missing the W&L school-record by just 1/2 inch. Senior captain Jill Kosch (Columbus, Neb./Scotus) finished second in the 400-meter dash with a time of 1:04.94.

On the men's side, W&L was led by a third-place finish in the 800-meter run by freshman David Hicks (Alexandria, Va./West Potomac) He crossed the line in a time of 2:12.37. Junior Marc Watson (Marietta, Ga./Walton) posted another strong showing in the sprint events, finishing fourth in the 55-meter dash (6.56 seconds), and sixth in the 200-meter dash (23.91). Junior Jacek Mucha (Dallas, Texas/AWTY International) recorded a pair of sixth place finishes in the high jump (5'10") and 400 meter dash (52.65).

Both of W&L's teams will return to action on February 26 at the ODAC Indoor Championships which are also set to be held at Lynchburg College.

W&L COMPETES IN VMI WINTER RELAYS (2/5)

LEXINGTON, Va. -- The Washington and Lee indoor track teams traveled across town over the weekend to compete in the VMI Winter Indoor Relays. The Generals were led by junior Marc Watson (Marietta, Ga./Walton) and freshman Burke Duncan (Oklahoma City, Okla./Casady), each of whom garnered fourth-place finishes in the competition. No team scoring was kept in the meet.

Watson claimed fourth place in the finals of the men's 55-meter dash in a time of 6.57 seconds. Duncan, W&L's top finisher on the women's side, crossed the line in the 3,000-meter run with a time of 11:08.70. The women's distance medley relay team ran its way to a second place finish out of seven teams, crossing the tape in a time of 13:18.10. The Generals had two other top-10 finishers in the meet. Freshman Kelly Schlicter (Littleton, Colo./Cappell) finished in seventh place in the women's 800-meter run (2:31.70), while junior Chris Wahl (Gaithersburg, Md./Quince Orchard) took home ninth place in the men's shot put (39' 06.5").

W&L's teams will return to action at Lynchburg College on February 8.

W&L TRACK AND FIELD FARES WELL AT LEBANON VALLEY INVITATIONAL (1/22)

LEXINGTON, Va. -- The Washington and Lee men's and women's track programs had several great individual performances on Saturday afternoon in the Lebanon Valley Invitational.

On the women's side, the Generals took first place in two relay events as they won the 4x200-meter relay with a time of 2:03.0 and the 4x800-meter relay with a time of 10:38.6. Junior Amy Calce (Williamsport, Pa./Bishop Neumann) placed second in the long jump with a jump of 15' 5.5'' and freshman Kelly Schlicter (Littleton, Colo./Cappell) took fourth place in the 1,500-meter run. Senior Jill Kosch (Columbus, Neb./Scotus Central Catholic) took fourth place in the 400-meter dash.

On the men's side, junior Marc Watson (Marietta, Ga./Walton) won the 55-meter dash event with a time of 6.5 seconds. Freshman David Hicks (Alexandria, Va./West Potomac) won the 1,500-meter run, crossing the tape at 4:19.2, while junior Chris Wahl (Gaithersburg, Md./Quince Orchard) finished fourth in the shot put with a toss of 38' 7''. Senior Hansell Pasco (Hilton Head, S.C./Hilton Head) placed third in the 200-meter dash with a time of 25.0 seconds.

No team scoring was kept at the event.

Washington and Lee's next meet will take place on Saturday as it travels to Carlisle, Pa., to compete in the Dickinson Invitational.

W&L OPENS INDOOR TRACK SEASON AT VMI (12/4)

LEXINGTON, Va. -- Washington and Lee opened its indoor track season by competing at the VMI Indoor Invitational on Saturday, December, 4th.

The Generals only had one runner compete in the invitational. Senior Hansell Pasco (Hilton Head, S.C./Hilton Head) competed in the 55 Meter Dash. He finished in 22nd place out of 33 runners in the event. Pasco posted a time of 6.88 seconds. Winning the event in a dead-heat of 6.38 seconds were Curtis Coleman of Savannah State University and Ken White of VMI.

W&L's full squad will next compete at the Lebanon Valley Invitational on January 22nd.
