LEXINGTON, Va. — The Washington and Lee women's track and field team won two events on day one of the W&L Carnival on Friday, highlighted by sophomore Kirsten McMichael's (Eighty Four, Pa./Ringgold) win in the 5,000m.
McMichael crossed the finish line in a career-best time of 18:08.60, which was four seconds faster than the second-place runner. The Blue and White's 4x400m relay also took the top spot with a time of 4:10.23. The quartet consisted of seniors Kara Farroni (Willoughby, Ohio/Willoughby South) and Catherine Fonvielle (Alexandria, Va./St. Stephen's & St. Agnes), junior Kaleigh Hinton (Florham Park, N.J./Hanover Park) and first-year Olivia Cooper (Newtown Square, Pa./Radnor).
In the 1,500m, the Generals had two of the Top 5 competitors. Junior Lily Arnold (Jacksonville, Fla./The Bolles School) took second in 4:51.21, and first-year Katie Bearup (Arvada, Colo./Ralston Valley) placed fifth (5:03.22).
First-year Alexa Castellana (Boonton, N.J./Mountain Lakes) recorded two Top 4 finishes. She was second in the long jump at 4.75m (15'7.00"), and tied for fourth in the high jump at 1.43m (4'8.25"). Senior Mackenzie Shand (Saline, Mich./Saline) was third in the discus at 32.79m (107'7.25").
The second day of the W&L Carnival begins on Saturday at 11:00 am.
