CHAPEL HILL, N.C. — The Washington and Lee women's track and field team competed at the Art and Linda Maillet Open hosted by the University of North Carolina on Saturday against mostly Division I and II schools.
In the mile, the Generals took two of the Top 4 spots. Sophomore Samantha Yates (Birmingham, Ala./St. Paul's School) finished second in 5:12.29, and sophomore Maggie Seybold (Cockeysville, Md./McDonogh School) was fourth with a time of 5:13.46.
The Blue and White also took two of the Top 5 spots in the pole vault. Senior Lizzy Stanton (Papillion, Neb./Papillion-LaVista South) was second with a leap of 3.40m (11'01.75"), and first-year Frances Conner (Mountain Brook, Ala./Mountain Brook) took fifth at 2.60m (8'06.25").
The Distance Medley Relay finished third with a time of 13:30.82. The quartet consisted of junior Lily Arnold (Jacksonville, Fla./The Bolles School), senior Catherine Fonvielle (Alexandria, Va./St. Stephen's & St. Agnes) and first-years Olivia Cooper (Newtown Square, Pa./Radnor) and Katie Bearup (Arvada, Colo./Ralston Valley).
In the 4x400m relay, W&L placed seventh in 4:21.32. The foursome consisted of senior Dana Lee (Nashville, Tenn./St. Cecilia Academy), junior Kaleigh Hinton (Florham Park, N.J./Hanover Park), Arnold and senior Ali Peacock (Libertyville, Ill./Vernon Hills).
Lee claimed sixth in the triple jump at 10.39m (34'01.25"), while first-year Alexa Castellana (Boonton, N.J./Mountain Lakes) was eighth at 10.19m (33'05.25"). Castellana also finished seventh in the high jump with a leap of 1.45m (4'09.00"). In the 3,000m, junior Rachel Steffen (Coronado, Calif./Coronado) was 10th with a time of 11:09.53.
The Generals return to action on Friday and Saturday of next week at the Liberty Kickoff.
