SALEM, Va. — The Washington and Lee women's track and field team opened the 2016-17 season at the Roanoke Invitational on Saturday, highlighted by taking four of the Top 5 spots in the 3,000m.
Sophomore Kirsten McMichael (Eighty Four, Pa./Ringgold) finished second in the event with a time of 10:54.53. Classmate Maggie Seybold (Cockeysville, Md./McDonogh School) was one spot behind her in 10:56.06. First-year Julia Moody (Houston, Texas/St. John's School) claimed fourth in 10:58.98, and first-year Katie Bearup (Arvada, Colo./Ralston Valley) was fifth in 10:59.09.
The Generals won two events on Saturday. Senior Lizzy Stanton (Papillion, Neb./Papillion-LaVista South) placed first in the pole vault with a leap of 3.30m (10'10.00"). The Distance Medley Relay also came in first with a time of 12:48.17. The quartet consisted of Seybold, seniors Kara Farroni (Willoughby, Ohio/Willoughby South) and Catherine Fonvielle (Alexandria, Va./St. Stephen's & St. Agnes) and sophomore Samantha Yates (Birmingham, Ala./St. Paul's School).
Senior Dana Lee (Nashville, Tenn./St. Cecilia Academy) placed in the Top 5 in three events. She was fourth in the long jump at 5.27m (17'03.50"), fifth in the 60m (8.22) and fifth in the 200m (27.21). First-year Alexa Castellana (Boonton, N.J./Mountain Lakes) took fourth in the triple jump at 10.66m (34'11.75").
The 4x400m claimed second, behind Division I Radford, with a time of 4:16.86. The foursome consisted of Lee, Fonvielle, Farroni and Hinton. In the 600m, first-year Olivia Cooper (Newtown Square, Pa./Radnor) was fourth with a time of 1:48.91, and senior Ali Peacock (Libertyville, Ill./Vernon Hills) finished fifth in the 400m (1:04.59).
The Generals will take the rest of December off, and next compete on January 14 at the University of North Carolina.
