NEWPORT NEWS, Va. — The Washington and Lee women's track and field team recorded 15 Top 5 finishes on Saturday at the Commonwealth Duals hosted by Christopher Newport. Senior Marissa Thompson (Chatham, Va./Chatham) led the Generals with four second-place finishes.
Thompson was the runner-up in the 100H (15.16), the long jump at 5.06m (16'07.25"), the 100m (12.79) and was part of the 4x100m relay that finished with a time of 50.27. Along with Thompson, the quartet was comprised of sophomore Janey Fugate (Atlanta, Ga./Whitefield Academy), junior Julia Murray (Bridgewater, N.J./Bridgewater-Raritan) and first-year Molly Ungrady (Ponte Vedra Beach, Fla./The Bolles School).
W&L had two winners on the day in sophomore Jillian Katterhagen (The Woodlands, Texas/The Woodlands) and first-year Leigh Stauffer (Thomasville, Ga./Brookwood School). Katterhagen took the top spot in the pole vault at 3.42m (11'02.20"), and Stauffer won the 3,000m steeplechase in 13:26.67. Katterhagen also placed seventh in the 100H with a time of 16.15.
Junior Alexandra Hagan (Tampa, Fla./H.B. Plant) claimed third in the pole vault with a jump of 2.97m (9'09.00"). In the 1,500m, the Generals took second and third. Junior Brandie Huffman (Warrenton, Va./Fauquier) finished second in 5:09.90 and first-year Kaitlin Bonaro (Waldorf, Md./North Point) placed third with a time of 5:12.64.
Junior Leigh Dannhauser (Bronxville, N.Y./Bronxville) came in fourth in the pole vault and the javelin. She cleared 2.67m (8'09.00") in the pole vault and threw 26.26m (86'02.00") in the javelin.
The Generals will take a week off and return to action on April 13 at the Johnson C. Smith Invitational.
