Fugate Sets School Record in 500m at Marietta Ice Breaker
MARIETTA, Ohio — The Washington and Lee women's track and field team competed in its first meet of the New Year on Saturday at the Marietta Ice Breaker, and earned wins in five events and had 14 Top 5 finishes.
Sophomore Janey Fugate (Atlanta, Ga./Whitefield Academy) led the team with two event victories, including a new school record in the 500m. In the team standings, the Generals finished third out of four teams with 107 points. Marietta won with 133 points.
Fugate crossed the finish line in 1:21.75 to take the top spot in the 500m. She also took the top spot in the 55H with a time of 9:51.
Joining Fugate with two event wins was first-year Maggie Kleber (Beach Haven, N.J./Southern Regional). She took the top spot in the long jump and the high jump. In the long jump, Kleber won at 4.76m and cleared 1.52m in the high jump.
First-year Molly Ungrady (Ponte Vedra Beach, Fla./The Bolles School) was the other General to claim an event victory. She won in the 200m at 28.01. She also finished second in the 55m with a time of 7.75. Senior Paige Gance (Wilton, Conn./Wilton) had two Top 3 finishes. She claimed third in the 55H at 9.87, and crossed the finish line third in the 500m at 1:29.35.
Junior Lauren Woodie (Bluefield, Va./Graham) took second in the 400m at 63.37. In the pole vault, W&L took two of the Top 3 spots. First-year Kaela Fiutak (Skaneateles, N.Y./Skaneateles) finished second at 3.05m, and sophomore Jillian Katterhagen (The Woodlands, Texas/The Woodlands) placed third at 3.05m.
The Generals return to action in two weeks when they compete at the Denison Invitational on January 26.
