Women's Tennis vs. NCAA Individual Championships

LAWRENCEVILLE, GA. -- The Washington and Lee women’s tennis duo of senior Katie Tabb (Minneapolis, Minn./Edina) and junior Lauren Caire (Nashville, Tenn./Harpeth Hall) fell in three sets in the quarterfinal round of the NCAA Division III Individual Championships on Saturday afternoon at the Collins Athletic Club.

Tabb and Caire, competing in the quarterfinals for the second-straight year, fell, 2-6, 6-3, 4-6 to Kristin Cobb and Marta Drane of Denison.

The duo finish the season with a record of 17-8 and their 47 total wins as a team are the fifth-most in W&L history. Additionally, Tabb’s 108 career doubles wins tie her for the most in school history.

W&L completed the 2009 season with an overall record of 20-5.

Women's Tennis vs. NCAA Individual Championships

LAWRENCEVILLE, Ga. -- The Washington and Lee women’s tennis tandem of senior Katie Tabb (Minneapolis, Minn./Edina) and junior Lauren Caire (Nashville, Tenn./Harpeth Hall) advanced to the quarterfinal round of the NCAA Division III Individual Championships with a straight-set victory on Friday afternoon at the Collins Athletic Club.

Tabb and Caire defeated Brittany Berckes and Natasha Brown of Amherst, 6-4, 6-2 to advance to the second day of play where they will face Kristin Cobb and Marta Drane of Denison. This is the second-straight year that Tabb and Caire have made an appearance in the NCAA quarterfinals.

Tabb was also won of two W&L players taking part in the individual portion of the event along with first-year Ellen Yeatman (Little Rock, Ark./Little Rock Central). Tabb won her first match, 6-0, 6-1, over Berckes before falling, 6-3, 0-6, 0-6 to Amanda Wu of Carnegie Mellon in the second round. Yeatman dropped her first round match, 3-6, 2-6, to Ploy Suhijindawong of St. Scholastica.

The quarterfinals for the doubles are slated to begin on Saturday at 3:00 pm.

Women's Tennis vs. Emory

LEXINGTON, Va. -- The fifth-ranked Washington and Lee women's tennis team fell, 5-2, to third-ranked Emory in the third round of the NCAA Division III Women's Tennis Team Tournament at the W&L Courts on Sunday afternooon.

With the loss, the Generals finish the season at 20-5, while Emory improves to 20-4. This marks the first time in the last 10 seasons that W&L has not advanced to the NCAA quarterfinal round.

LEXINGTON, Va. -- After receiving a first round bye, the fifth-ranked Washington and Lee women's tennis team rolled to a 5-0 win over Meredith in the second round of the NCAA Division III Women's Tennis Team Tournament on Saturday afternoon at the W&L Courts.

With the win, the Generals (20-4) advance to Sunday's third round where it will take on No. 3 Emory at 12:30 pm. Meredith concludes its season with an 18-4 overall record.

Women's Tennis vs. Virginia Wesleyan

LEXINGTON, Va. -- The second-ranked and top-seeded Washington and Lee women's tennis team claimed its 19th Old Dominion Athletic Conference Championship with a 5-0 victory over second-seeded Virginia Wesleyan on Sunday afternoon at the W&L Courts.

Following the event, the Generals had several athletes honored by the ODAC. Senior Katie Tabb (Minneapolis, Minn./Edina) was named the ODAC Player of the Year for the second-straight year, first-year Ellen Yeatman (Little Rock, Ark./Little Rock Central) was tabbed as the Rookie of the Year and Head Coach Eric Ishida earned his second-straight Coach of the Year honors.

The Generals (19-4) will now await word on their first round opponent in the NCAA Championships. The NCAA Tournament is set to begin on May 8th.

LEXINGTON, Va. -- Second-ranked Washington and Lee topped third-ranked Carnegie Mellon, 6-3, in women's tennis action on Saturday afternoon at the W&L outdoor courts in Lexington, Va. at ITA Small College Championships

MOBILE, Ala. -- Following Thursday’s deflating loss in the first round of the Intercollegiate Tennis Association’s (ITA) Small College Championships, the W&L duo of senior Katie Tabb (Minneapolis, Minn./Edina) and junior Lauren Caire (Nashville, Tenn./Harpeth Hall) won its two matches on Friday en route to a fifth-place finish.

Tabb and Caire rebounded from Thursday’s first-round loss and breezed past Emory’s Lorne McManigle and Sabra Rogers 6-1, 6-1, before defeating UT-Tyler’s Beth Launius and Michelle Hagler 6-2, 6-3 to wrap up a fifth place finish.

The ITA Small College Championships conclude the fall season for the W&L women’s tennis team.

MOBILE, Ala. -- The Washington and Lee tandem of senior Katie Tabb (Minneapolis, Minn./Edina) and junior Lauren Caire (Nashville, Tenn./Harpeth Hall) dropped its opening match in the doubles portion of the Intercollegiate Tennis Association’s (ITA) Small College Championships on Thursday afternoon.

Despite jumping out to a one-set advantage, the No. 1 seeded doubles team of Tabb and Caire fell 6-2, 5-7, 5-10 to Tufts University’s Julia Browne and Megan McCooey.

With the loss, the pair will now take on Emory’s Lorne McManigle and Sabra Rogers on Friday at 12:00 noon.

at ODAC Individual Championships

LYTNCHBURG, Va. -- The W&L women’s tennis team followed up its six wins in the singles portion of the ODAC Individual Championship by winning all four flights in the doubles portion of the event on Sunday afternoon.

 W&L’s top team of senior Katie Tabb (Minneapolis, Minn./Edina) and first-year Ann Morris (Lexington, Ky./Lexington Catholic) won their semifinal match by default before defeating the top team from Hollins, 8-1, in the finals.

In the second flight the tandem of first-years Trelsie Sadler (Wakefield, R.I./Groton School) and Lauren Lukas (Manitowoc, Wis./Lincoln) advanced to the finals after defeating Bridgewater, 8-1. In the finals the W&L duo knocked off Hollins 8-2.

The third flight featured first-years Jen Snyder (Highland Heights, Ohio/Gilmour Academy) and Laura Pattillo (Atlanta, Ga./Marist) as they saw their first action of the tournament in the semifinal round after advancing to it due to a defualt. They advanced to the finals on the strength of a 8-0 win over Hollins, and then defeated Emory & Henry by the same score in the finals.

Finally, in the fourth flight the pairing of first years Sarah Offut (Charlotte, N.C./Charlotte Country Day) and Chloe Bellomy (Beaufort, S.C./Beaufort) defeated Emory & Henry, 8-0, in the finals after advancing to the semis the previous day.

Of the possible 11 combined flights (7 singles and 4 doubles), W&L won every one but the seventh singles flight, where the Generals did not have a competitor.

Washington and Lee is done as a team for the fall. However, the doubles pairing of Tabb and junior Lauren Caire (Nashville, Tenn/Harpeth Hall) will travel to Mobile, Alabama to take part in the ITA Small College Championships beginning on Thursday.

at ODAC Individual Championships

LYNCHBURG. Va. -- The W&L women’s tennis team swept all six singles flights that it competed in and is in position to do the same in the doubles following day one of the ODAC Individual Tournament.

Senior Katie Tabb (Minneapolis, Minn./Edina) took home championship honors at #1 singles, and was one of six Generals to win their flight. First-years Lauren Lukas (Manitowoc, Wis./Lincoln), Trelsie Sadler (Wakefield, R.I./Groton School), Ann Morris (Lexington, Ky./Lexington Catholic), Jen Snyder (Highland Heights, Ohio/Gilmour Academy) and Chloe Bellomy (Beaufort, S.C./Beaufort) took home titles in flights 2-6. The Generals did not have anyone competing in the seventh flight.

In the doubles portion of the event, Tabb paired with Morris to comprise W&L’s top singles team and advance to Sunday’s semifinal round, while Sadler and Lukas also advanced. The team of Snyder and first-year Laura Pattillo (Atlanta, Ga./Marist) received a first-round bye to advance to the semis, while Bellomy and first-year Sarah Offut (Charlotte, N.C./Charlotte Country Day) have advanced to the finals in the fourth doubles flight.

Final rounds of the doubles tournament takes place tomorrow, Sunday, at E.C. Glass High School.

at ITA Southeast Region Championships

FREDERICKSBURG, Va. - - Senior Katie Tabb (Minneapolis, Minn./Edina) paired with junior Lauren Caire (Nashville, Tenn./Harpeth Hall) to capture the title in the main doubles draw of the Wilson ITA Southeast Regional Women’s Tennis Championships on Monday afternoon. Caire and Tabb defeated Mary Washington’s pairing of senior Becky Morse-Karzen and sophomore Megan Lawlor, 8-5, in the final.

With the win, Tabb and Caire advance to play in the ITA Small College Championships, to be held Oct. 16-19 in Mobile, Alabama.

Tabb came close to winning the singles title as well. In attempting to defend her title from a year ago, Tabb advanced to the finals before ultimately falling to Carnegie Mellon’s Laura Chen 6-4, 6-1.

 In the “blue” draw, four Generals advanced to the semis and they will be played on Tuesday in Lexington. First-year Laura Pattilo (Atlanta, Ga./Marist) will take on junior Katie Harris (Richmond, Va./St. Catherine’s) in one semifinal, while Catherine Reed (St. Louis, Mo./MICDS) will face off against first-year Ashley Leinweber (Bloomfield Hills, Mi./Cranbrook) in the other.

The Generals next hit the court when they travel to Hollins to take part in the ODAC individual championships beginning on Oct. 10.
