W&L’s APPLEGATE FALLS IN NCAA SINGLES FINAL (5/20)

FREDERICKSBURG, Va. -- Top-seeded Liz Bondi of DePauw claimed the NCAA Division III Women’s Tennis Singles Championship by defeating second-seeded Washington and Lee senior Emily Applegate (Charleston, S.C./Porter-Gaud) on Sunday afternoon in Fredericksburg, Va.

Despite falling behind in the first set, 6-2, Applegate rallied to win the second set, 6-4. However, Bondi managed to win the final set, 7-6 (7-3), to take the singles title.

Applegate, the 2006 National Singles Champion, concludes her career at W&L with a 65-6 (.915) record in singles.

FREDERICKSBURG, Va. -- Washington and Lee senior Emily Applegate (Charleston, S.C./Porter-Gaud) advanced to the title match of the 2007 NCAA Division III Women’s Tennis Singles Championship on Saturday afternoon in Fredericksburg, Va.

Applegate, the defending singles champion, defeated St. Benedict’s Megan Tiegs, 6-4, 6-3, in the quarterfinals and then best Wheaton’s Jordan Hook, 6-4, 6-1, in the semifinals.

The second-seeded Applegate owns a 17-1 record thus far this season and will take on top-seeded Liz Bondi of DePauw in the championship match on Sunday at noon. Bondi (24-2) will be making her second appearance in the singles championship as she lost a three-set match to W&L’s Lindsay Hagerman ‘05 in the 2005 Championships.

W&L'S APPLEGATE ADVANCES TO NCAA QUARTERFINALS (5/18)

FREDERICKSBURG, Va. -- Washington and Lee senior Emily Applegate (Charleston, S.C./Porter-Gaud) advanced to the quarterfinals of the NCAA Division III Women’s Tennis Singles Championship on Friday afternoon in Fredericksburg, Va.

Applegate won her first-round match with Jenna Mezin of Wellesley, 6-0, 6-2, and then bested Jackie Shtemberg (TCNJ), 4-6, 6-4, 6-4 in the round of 16.

Sophomore Katie Tabb (Minneapolis, Minn./Edina) and senior Ginny Wortham (Richmond, Va./Collegiate) both lost in the first round. Tabb fell to Siobhan Finicane of Pomona-Pitzer, 6-2, 0-6, 1-6, while Wortham lost to Middlebury's Amy Roche, 6-4, 3-6, 2-6.

Applegate and senior Kristen McClung (Charleston, W.Va./Charleston Catholic) competed in the doubles portion of the championships, but lost to Wheaton's Jordan Hook and Karly Olson, 7-5, 3-6, 3-6.

Applegate will take on St. Benedict's Megan Tiegs on Saturday morning in the quarterfinals.

W&L WOMEN'S TENNIS WINS FIRST NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIP WITH 5-2 VICTORY OF AMHERST (5/17)

FREDERICKSBURG, Va. -- The Washington and Lee women's tennis team posted a 5-2 win over Amherst College to secure the NCAA Division III National Championship on Thursday afternoon in Fredericksburg, Va.

This is the first team title for the program and the first at W&L since men's tennis won the crown in 1988.

The Generals (25-1) took a 2-1 lead following the doubles competition after the duo of sophomore Katie Tabb (Minneapolis, Minn./Edina) and senior Ginny Wortham (Richmond, Va./Collegiate) and the pair of freshman Lauren Caire (Nashville, Tenn./Harpeth Hall) and junior Leah Weston (Colorado Springs, Colo./Air Academy) won at No. 2 and No. 3 doubles, respectively.

Junior Kelly Will (Holly Springs, N.C./Cary Academy) won No. 4 singles, 6-0, 6-2, and senior Emily Applegate (Charleston, S.C./Porter-Gaud) took the No. 1 singles match, 6-2, 6-2, to give W&L a 4-1 advantage. Amherst's Brittany Berckes took No. 2 singles, but Tabb closed out No. 3 singles, 7-6 (8-6), 6-2, to give the Generals the title.

Wortham, Applegate and Tabb will compete in the first round of the individual championship on Friday morning, while the tandem of Applegate and senior Kristen McClung (Charleston, W.Va./Charleston Catholic) will also be in action in the first round of the doubles action on Friday morning.

W&L WOMEN'S TENNIS ADVANCES TO NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIP MATCH WITH 5-0 WIN OVER WILLIAMS (5/16)

FREDERICKSBURG, Va.. -- The third-ranked Washington and Lee women’s tennis team used a 5-0 win over Williams to advance to title match of the NCAA Division III Women’s Tennis Championships on Wednesday afternoon in Fredericksburg, Va.

This marks the Generals' third-straight appearance in the finals, fourth trip in five years and fifth appearance overall. Last year, W&L fell to Emory, 5-1, in the championship match.

The Generals (24-1) swept the doubles competition with seniors Emily Applegate (Charleston, S.C./Porter-Gaud) and Kristen McClung (Charleston, W.Va./Charleston Catholic) winning at No. 1 doubles, 8-3, sophomore Katie Tabb (Minneapolis, Minn./Edina) and senior Ginny Wortham (Richmond, Va./Collegiate) taking the No. 2 doubles match, 9-8, and freshman Lauren Caire (Nashville, Tenn./Harpeth Hall) and junior Leah Weston (Colorado Springs, Colo./Air Academy) winning No. 3 doubles, 8-5.

Tabb notched a point for W&L by winning No. 3 singles, 6-2, 6-1, and junior Kelly Will (Holly Springs, N.C./Cary Academy) won No. 4 singles, 6-2, 6-1, to send the Generals to championship match.

W&L returns to the court on Thursday when it plays Amherst in the finals at 1:00 pm.

W&L WOMEN'S TENNIS DOWNS MIDDLEBURY, 5-3, IN NCAA QUARTERFINALS (5/15)

FREDERICKSBURG, Va.. -- The third-ranked Washington and Lee women’s tennis team defeated Middlebury College, 5-3, in the quarterfinals of the NCAA Division III Women’s Tennis Championships hosted by the University of Mary Washington on Tuesday afternoon in Fredericksburg, Va.

Amy Roche and Claire Smyser gave Middlebury an early 1-0 lead after winning No.1 doubles over seniors Emily Applegate (Charleston, S.C./Porter-Gaud) and Kristen McClung (Charleston, W.Va./Charleston Catholic), 8-4. However, sophomore Katie Tabb (Minneapolis, Minn./Edina) and senior Ginny Wortham (Richmond, Va./Collegiate) won at No. 2 doubles, 9-8, and freshman Lauren Caire (Nashville, Tenn./Harpeth Hall) and junior Leah Weston (Colorado Springs, Colo./Air Academy) took the No. 3 doubles match, 8-4, to give W&L a 2-1 lead going into singles.

Middlebury's Claire Smyser downed Wortham, 6-2, 6-4, at No. 2 singles, but Weston took No. 6 singles, 7-5, 6-4. Despite Applegate losing No. 1 singles, 6-4, 7-5, junior Kelly Will (Holly Springs, N.C./Cary Academy) won No. 4 singles, 6-2, 4-6, 6-1, and Tabb closed out to win No.3 singles, 5-7, 6-2, 6-4, to give the Generals the win.

The Generals return to the court on Wednesday when they play Williams at 2:00 pm.

W&L WOMEN’S TENNIS WRAPS UP COMPETITION IN VIRGINIA TECH FALL INVITATIONAL (10/8)

BLACKSBURG, Va. -- The Washington and Lee women’s tennis team finished its participation in the Virginia Tech Fall Invitational on Sunday in Blacksburg, Va. Junior Rebecca Timmis (Peachtree City, Ga./McIntosh) won the championship of the “D” singles flight.

Timmis moved on to the finals by downing Mary Washington’s Stacey Rickard in the semifinals. Then, Timmis met teammate junior Leah Weston (Colorado Springs, Colo./Air Academy) in the finals and came out with a 6-2, 6-4 win to capture first place in the flight.

In the C singles draw, both senior Ginny Wortham (Richmond, Va./Collegiate) and junior Kelly Will (Holly Springs, N.C./Cary Academy) were defeated in the semifinals. Virginia Tech’s Mary Kate James defeated Wortham, while Will lost to Bethan James, also of the host school.

The Virginia Tech Fall Invitational concludes the fall season for the W&L women’s tennis team.

W&L WOMEN’S TENNIS CONTINUES PLAY AT VIRGINIA TECH FALL INVITATIONAL (10/7)

BLACKSBURG, Va. -- The Washington and Lee women’s tennis team competed in day two of the Virginia Tech Fall Invitational on Saturday in Blacksburg, Va. The duo of freshman Lauren Caire (Nashville, Tenn./Harpeth Hall) and sophomore Katie Tabb (Minneapolis, Minn./Edina) won the “B” doubles final.

Caire and Tabb advanced to the finals by downing James Madison’s Lauren Graham and Kirra Summers in the quarterfinals and beating teammates sophomore Tori Christmas (Richmond, Va./Collegiate) and junior Kelly Will (Holly Springs, N.C./Cary Academy) in the semifinals. The pairing then met teammates senior Ginny Wortham (Richmond, Va./Collegiate) and junior Leah Weston (Colorado Springs, Colo./Air Academy) in the finals. Caire and Tabb defeated the team of Wortham and Weston, 8-6, to win the flight.

The Generals wrap up their participation in the Virginia Tech Fall Invitational with the semifinals and finals of the “C” and “D” singles flights on Sunday.

W&L WOMEN’S TENNIS WRAPS UP PLAY AT THE ITA SOUTH REGIONAL

FREDERICKSBURG, Va. -- Washington and Lee sophomore Katie Tabb (Minneapolis, Minn/Edina) advanced to the finals of the main draw but was defeated by top-seeded Amy Staloch of Carnegie Mellon at the ITA Southeast Region Championships hosted by Mary Washington on Monday.

The second-seeded Tabb downed Swarthmore’s Sonya Reynolds, the third seed, in the semifinals before falling to Staloch, 6-4, 6-4, in the finals of the main draw. Senior Ginny Wortham (Richmond, Va./Collegiate) had also advanced to the semifinals of the main draw, when she was defeated by Staloch.

In the singles portion of the blue draw, Meg Spalitta (New Orleans, La./Sacred Heart) advanced to the finals by beating teammate senior Katie Kingsbury (Jenkintown, Pa./Philadelphia-Montgomery Christian) but fell at the hands of Virginia Wesleyan’s Imee Bautista, 6-4, 6-2, in the final match.

The doubles team of junior Rebecca Timmins (Peachtree City, Ga./McIntosh) and freshman Katie Bouret (Atherton, Calif./Menlo School) represented W&L in of the consolation bracket of the main doubles draw but were downed, 8-5, by the duo of Waverly Lutz and Rachel Wallwork of Swarthmore College.

The Washington and Lee women’s tennis team returns to action on Oct. 7-8, when it hosts the W&L Fall Festival.

FREDERICKSBURG, Va. -- Washington and Lee senior Ginny Wortham (Richmond, Va./Collegiate) and sophomore Katie Tabb (Minneapolis, Minn/Edina) have advanced to the semifinals in the main singles draw at the ITA Southeast Region Championships hosted by Mary Washington on Sunday.

FREDERICKSBURG, Va. -- Washington and Lee senior Ginny Wortham (Richmond, Va./Collegiate), junior Leah Weston (Colorado Springs, Colo./Air Academy), sophomores Tori Christmas (Richmond, Va./Collegiate) and Katie Tabb (Minneapolis, Minn/Edina) and freshmen Katie Bouret (Atherton, Calif./Menlo School) and Lauren Caire all advanced to the round of 16 in the main singles draw at the ITA Southeast Region Championships hosted by Mary Washington on Saturday.

In the singles blue draw, senior Katie Kingsbury (Jenkintown, Pa./Philadelphia-Montgomery Christian), juniors Rhodes Proctor (Raleigh, N.C./St. Mary's School) and Lauren Cook (Seattle, Wash./Seattle Prep) and sophomore Meg Spalitta (New Orleans, La./Sacred Heart) advanced to the round of 16.

The main doubles draw featured the fifth-seeded duo of Caire and Weston advancing to the quarterfinals, while the pairs of Bouret and junior Rebecca Timmins (Peachtree City, Ga./McIntosh) and Tabb and Wortham moved on to the round of 16. Details of the final contests for Bouret-Timmins and Tabb-Wortham were unavailable.

The Generals return to action on Sunday for day two of the ITA Southeast Regional.
