W&L's APPLEGATE WINS NCAA SINGLES CHAMPIONSHIP

SANTA CRUZ, Calif. -- Washington and Lee junior Emily Applegate (Charleston, S.C./Porter-Gaud) claimed the NCAA Division III Women’s Tennis Singles Championship on Tuesday afternoon in Santa Cruz, Calif.

Applegate, the third seed, defeated fourth-seeded Kristen Raverta of Amherst, 6-3, 6-4 to become the second consecutive General to win the NCAA singles title. She joined Lindsay Hagerman ‘05, who won the NCAA Singles Championship last season.

Applegate ended her season with 33 wins (33-3), the second-most singles victories in a season in W&L history.

The Generals finished the season with a school-record 28 wins (28-1) and a runner-up finish at the NCAA Division III National Championships for the second consecutive season and the third time in the last four years.

W&L's APPLEGATE ADVANCES TO THE NCAA SINGLES CHAMPIONSHIP MATCH

SANTA CRUZ, Calif. -- Washington and Lee junior Emily Applegate (Charleston, S.C./Porter-Gaud) advanced to the NCAA Division III Women’s Tennis Singles Championship match with wins in the quarterfinals and semifinals on Monday afternoon in Santa Cruz, Calif.

Applegate, the third seed, defeated fifth-seeded Gabriela Carvalho of Sewanee, 1-6, 6-3, 6-1 in the quarterfinals before knocking off Muhlenberg’s Amy Schmidt, 6-2, 6-3 in the semifinals.

With the pair of wins, Applegate moved into second place on W&L’s season wins list with 32 victories.

In other quarterfinal action, freshman Katie Tabb (Minneapolis, Minn./Edina) lost to Schmidt, 6-2, 7-5.

Applegate returns to action on Tuesday when she plays fourth-seeded Kristen Raverta of Amherst in the NCAA Singles Championship match. The match begins at 9:00 am pacific time.

W&L's WORTHAM AND TABB FALL IN THE SEMIFINALS AT THE NCAA DOUBLES CHAMPIONSHIP

SANTA CRUZ, Calif. -- The Washington and Lee duo of junior Ginny Wortham (Richmond, Va./Collegiate) and freshman Katie Tabb (Minneapolis, Minn./Edina) fell in the semifinals of the NCAA Division III Women’s Tennis Doubles Championship on Sunday afternoon in Santa Cruz, Calif.

Wortham and Tabb knocked off the pair of Anne Schneidman and Cary Gibson from Williams, 6-4, 7-5 in the quarterfinals before losing to the top-seeded duo of Liz Bondi and Amrita Padda from DePauw, 7-5, 6-2 in the semifinals.

The NCAA Singles Championship quarterfinals and semifinals were scheduled to be played on Sunday, but were postponed until Monday due to inclement weather. Junior Emily Applegate (Charleston, S.C./Porter-Gaud), the number three seed, will play fifth-seeded Gabriela Carvalho of Sewanee in one of the quarterfinal matches, while Tabb will face off against Muhlenberg’s Amy Schmidt in another quarterfinal match.

The NCAA Singles Championship match will be played on Tuesday.

W&L's APPLEGATE AND TABB ADVANCE TO QUARTERFINALS OF NCAA SINGLES CHAMPIONSHIP

Additionally, the duo of Tabb and junior Ginny Wortham (Richmond, Va./Collegiate) advanced to the quarterfinals of the NCAA Doubles Championship.

Applegate, the number three seed, defeated Allison Dunn of Colby, 6-1, 6-1 in the first round and then knocked off Amy Staloch of Carnegie Mellon, 6-2, 6-2, in the second round. Applegate will play fifth-seeded Gabriela Carvalho of Sewanee in the quarterfinals.

Tabb downed sixth-seeded Jeannine Liang of Claremont Mudd-Scripps, 7-5, 6-4 in the first round and then defeated Vindya Dayananda of the University of Chicago, 7-5, 6-2 in the second round. Tabb will face off against Muhlenberg’s Amy Schmidt in the quarterfinals.

In the first round of the doubles, Tabb and Wortham knocked off the duo of Jennifer Kaswick and Rebecca Lange of Pomona-Pitzer, 6-4, 4-6, 6-1 and will take on Anne Schneidman and Cary Gibson of Williams in the quarterfinals.

In other action, Wortham lost to eighth-seeded Ashley Kriwinsky of Kenyon, 7-6 (7-2), 6-2 in the first round of singles play, while Applegate and junior Kristen McClung (Charleston, W.Va./Charleston Catholic) lost to DePauw’s Erin Andrade and Connie Shim, 6-4, 7-6 in the first round of doubles.

The Generals return to the court on Sunday with the singles competition beginning at 12:00 pm pacific time and the doubles action starting at 4:30 pm pacific time.

W&L WOMEN'S TENNIS FALLS TO EMORY, 5-1, IN NCAA NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIP MATCH

SANTA CRUZ, Calif. -- The top-ranked Washington and Lee women’s tennis team lost to No. 5 Emory University by a score of 5-1 in the NCAA Division III Women’s Tennis National Championship match on Friday evening in Santa Cruz, Calif. With the win, the Eagles (19-6) captured their fourth consecutive NCAA Championship. The Generals finished the season with a 28-1 record.

W&L lost all three doubles matches to fall behind 3-0. At No. 1 doubles, Emory’s Linda Tien and Richelle Marasigan defeated juniors Emily Applegate (Charleston, S.C./Porter-Gaud) and Kristen McClung (Charleston, W.Va./Charleston Catholic), 9-7. The duo of Jamie Chan and Indu Anand knocked off junior Ginny Wortham (Richmond, Va./Collegiate) and freshman Katie Tabb (Minneapolis, Minn./Edina), 8-6, at No. 2 doubles, while Samantha Shapiro and Cristina Arellano bested sophomores Leah Weston (Colorado Springs, Colo./Air Academy) and Rebecca Timmis (Peachtree City, Ga./McIntosh), 8-2, at No. 3 doubles.

The Generals pulled to within 3-1 after Applegate defeated Marasigan, 6-3, 6-0, at No. 1 singles, but the Eagles won the next two singles matches to claim the title. Arellano bested sophomore Kelly Will (Holly Spring, N.C./Cary Academy), 6-1, 6-2 at No. 6 singles and then Tien beat Tabb, 6-1, 6-3 at No. 2 singles.

Wortham, McClung and Weston all had their singles matches called after Emory earned its’ fifth point to win the match.

This was the Generals fourth appearance in the NCAA National Championship match and they have lost all four matches to Emory. W&L fell to the Eagles by identical 5-1 scores in 1996 and 2003 and then lost 5-3 to Emory last season.

Applegate and Tabb will continue their season in the NCAA Singles Championships. In the NCAA Doubles Championship, Applegate will partner with McClung, while Tabb will pair with Wortham. The first two rounds of singles play and the first round of doubles will take place on Saturday.

W&L WOMEN'S TENNIS ADVANCES TO NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIP MATCH WITH A 5-1 WIN OVER CLAREMONT MUDD-SCRIPPS IN NCAA SEMIFINALS

SANTA CRUZ, Calif. -- The top-ranked Washington and Lee women’s tennis team advanced to the NCAA Division III Championship match for the second consecutive season and for the third time in the last four years with a 5-1 victory over No. 4 Claremont Mudd-Scripps in the NCAA semifinals on Thursday afternoon in Santa Cruz, Calif.

The Generals (28-0) jumped out to a 3-0 lead by sweeping the doubles matches. The duo of juniors Emily Applegate (Charleston, S.C./Porter-Gaud) and Kristen McClung (Charleston, W.Va./Charleston Catholic) defeated Jeannine Liang and Yassie Entekhabi, 8-5, at No. 1 doubles. At No. 2 doubles, junior Ginny Wortham (Richmond, Va./Collegiate) and freshman Katie Tabb (Minneapolis, Minn./Edina) knocked off Jessica Nagasago and Allison Laygo, 8-6. Sophomores Leah Weston (Colorado Springs, Colo./Air Academy) and Rebecca Timmis (Peachtree City, Ga./McIntosh) finished the sweep with an 8-4 win over Kristen Handley and Lisa Steckmest at No. 3 doubles.

W&L pushed its’ lead to 4-0 after Wortham defeated Nagasago, 6-1, 6-2 at No. 3 singles. CM-S pulled to within 4-1 when Entekhabi bested Tabb, 6-3, 6-0 at No. 2 singles, but the Generals closed out the match after McClung knocked off Laygo, 6-2, 6-2 at No. 4 singles.

Applegate, Weston and sophomore Kelly Will (Holly Spring, N.C./Cary Academy) all had their singles matches called after W&L had enough points to win the match.

The Generals, who have finished as the NCAA Runner-up three times, will attempt to win their first-ever national title on Friday when they play the winner of the match between No. 2 Trinity (Texas) and No. 5 Emory. The championship match begins at 2:00 pm pacific time.

SANTA CRUZ, Calif. -- The top-ranked Washington and Lee women’s tennis team defeated Williams College, 5-0, in the quarterfinals of the NCAA Division III Women’s Tennis Championships on Wednesday afternoon in Santa Cruz, Calif.

Junior Kristen McClung (Charleston, W.Va./Charleston Catholic) and sophomore Kelly Will (Holly Spring, N.C./Cary Academy) both won their singles matches.

At No. 4 singles, McClung defeated Annie Hancock, 6-1, 6-1, while Will knocked off Anne Schneidman, 6-2, 6-1, at No. 6 singles.

W&L WOMEN'S TENNIS WINS ODAC CHAMPIONSHIPS

GREENSBORO, N.C. -- The Washington and Lee women's tennis team claimed its' league-record 16th Old Dominion Conference Championship on Sunday afternoon at Guilford College.

The Generals tallied 99 team points and were followed by Emory & Henry (72), Hollins (70), Virginia Wesleyan (67), Bridgewater (63), Roanoke (58), Guilford (46), Lynchburg (43), Randolph-Macon (30), Randolph-Macon Woman's (25) and Sweet Briar (21).

Senior Emily Applegate (Charleston, S.C./Porter-Gaud) was named the ODAC Player of the Year, while junior Katie Kingsbury (Jenkintown, Pa./Philadelphia-Montgomery Christian) was selected the ODAC Women's Tennis Scholar-Athlete of the Year.

Applegate claimed the No. 1 singles championship with a 6-0, 6-0 victory over Randolph-Macon's Elizabeth Kristofak in the finals. She also teamed with sophomore Rebecca Timmis (Peachtree City, Ga./McIntosh) to defeat Bridgewater's Jessica Hill and Brittany VanWickler in the championship of the third doubles flight, 6-0, 6-1.

Freshman Katie Tabb (Minneapolis, Minn./Edina) was the champion at No. 2 singles, defeating Roanoke's Maria Migliarese in the championship match, 6-2, 6-4. She then teamed with junior Ginny Wortham (Richmond, Va./Collegiate) to defeat Hollins' Melissa James and Barrett Jones in the final of the first doubles bracket, 6-1, 6-0. Wortham then claimed the championship of the third singles flight with a 6-0, 6-0 win over Lan Bai of Hollins in the finals.

Sophomore Leah Weston (Colorado Springs, Colo./Air Academy) was the champion at No. 4 singles, defeating Virginia Wesleyan's Lisa Fanney in the finals by a score of 6-0, 6-2. Weston also paired up with senior Lisa Mabry (Memphis, Tenn./St. Mary’s Episcopal) to defeat Virginia Wesleyan's Fanney and Caroline Place, 6-2, 6-1, in the finals of the No. 2 doubles flight.

Freshman Tori Christmas (Richmond, Va./Collegiate) emerged as the champion at No. 5 singles, defeating Emory & Henry's Kate Childress in the finals, 6-0, 6-0.

Sophomore Kelly Will (Holly Springs, N.C./Cary Academy), the only General not seeded No. 1 in her flight, defeated Bridgewater's Marlena Pipkin in the finals of the No. 6 singles flight by a score of 6-0, 6-0.

The Generals, ranked No. 1 in Division III, will return to action on Sat., May 6 in the first round of the NCAA Championships.

GREENSBORO, N.C. -- The top-ranked Washington and Lee women’s tennis team had all six singles players and all three doubles teams advance to the finals on the second day of the ODAC Championships held at Guilford College.

Juniors Emily Applegate (Charleston, S.C./Porter-Gaud) and Ginny Wortham (Richmond, Va./Collegiate), sophomores Leah Weston (Colorado Springs, Colo./Air Academy) and Kelly Will (Holly Springs, N.C./Cary Academy) and freshmen Katie Tabb (Minneapolis, Minn./Edina) and Tori Christmas (Richmond, Va./Collegiate) all won their semifinal matches to advance to the championship match in their respective flights.

At No. 1 singles, Applegate defeated Trista McGlothlin of Emory & Henry, 6-2, 6-0, while Tabb knocked off Lynchburg’s Sarah Helbig, 7-6 (7-1), 6-1 at No. 2 singles. At No. 3 singles, Wortham beat Stacie Blevins of Emory & Henry, 6-0, 6-0, and Weston bested Lynchburg’s Erika Seay, 6-2, 6-0 at No. 4 singles. At No. 1 doubles, Tabb and Wortham knocked off the Bridgewater duo of Diana Ricker and Hilary Teeter, 8-1, while senior Lisa Mabry (Memphis, Tenn./St. Mary’s Episcopal) and Weston defeated Krizia Gravina and Maria Migliarese of Roanoke, 8-2, at No. 2 doubles. FORT MYERS, Fla. -- Washington and Lee junior Emily Applegate (Charleston, S.C./Porter-Gaud) finished sixth in the Division III singles draw at the 2005 ITA National Small College Championships hosted by Florida Gulf Coast University on Saturday.

Applegate lost to Carrie Preston of Washington (Mo.) University, 3-6, 6-4, 3-6 in the fifth place match.

Applegate now stands at 10-2 on the season.

W&L's APPLEGATE AND MCCLUNG FINISH FOURTH IN DOUBLES AT ITA NATIONAL SMALL COLLEGE CHAMPIONSHIPS

FORT MYERS, Fla. -- Washington and Lee juniors Emily Applegate (Charleston, S.C./Porter-Gaud) and Kristen McClung (Charleston, W.Va./Charleston Catholic) finished fourth in the Division III doubles draw at the 2005 ITA National Small College Championships hosted by Florida Gulf Coast University on Friday.

Applegate and McClung, the top-seeded team, lost to second-seeded Tatiana Steinberg and Sandra Monetz of Redlands, 6-7 (4), 6-0, 6-10 in the third place match. Applegate and McClung participated in the third place match after being defeated by the pair of Hali Walther and Jenna Mezin of Wellesley, 6-4, 7-5 in the semifinals.

In the consolation round of the singles draw, Applegate defeated Christian Contrafatto of the College of New Jersey, 6-3, 6-0.

On Saturday morning at 11:00 am, Applegate returns to the court where she will play Carrie Preston of Washington (Mo.) University in the fifth place match.

Applegate and McClung, the top-seeded team, knocked off the pair of Linda Tien and Sam Shapiro of Emory, 6-3, 6-4, in the quarterfinals en route to the semifinals.

In the singles draw, Applegate, the second seed, fell to Laura Steinmertz of Trinity (Texas), 2-6, 6-3, 2-6 in the quarterfinals.

On Friday morning at 8:00 am, Applegate returns to the court where she will play Christian Contrafatto of the College of New Jersey in the consolation round. Applegate and McClung will take the court against the duo of Hali Walther and Jenna Mezin of Wellesley in their doubles semifinals match at 12:30 pm.

W&L WOMEN'S TENNIS HOSTS W&L FALL FESTIVAL

LEXINGTON, Va. -- Washington and Lee freshman Tori Christmas (Richmond, Va./Collegiate) was a double winner at the W&L women’s tennis Fall Festival hosted by the Generals on Saturday and Sunday.

Christmas won the number four singles flight with a 7-5, 6-1 victory over Carnegie Mellon’s Mai Otsuka in the finals. Christmas then teamed up with sophomore Rebecca Timmis (Peachtree City, Ga./McIntosh) to win the number two doubles flight. The duo beat the W&L pair of junior Katie Kingsbury (Jenkintown, Pa./Philadelphia-Montgomery Christian) and sophomore Kelly Will (Holly Springs, N.C./Cary Academy), 8-6, in the championship match.

Junior Emily Applegate (Charleston, S.C./Porter-Gaud) defeated Sonya Reynolds of Swarthmore, 3-6, 7-6 (1), 10-1 to capture the number one singles flight.

Freshman Katie Tabb (Minneapolis, Minn./Edina) was the champion at the number two singles flight. Tabb knocked off Kingsbury, 7-6 (5), 6-7 (4), 10-5 to win the title.

In the number one doubles flight, the W&L tandem of junior Ginny Wortham (Richmond, Va./Collegiate) and sophomore Leah Weston (Colorado Springs, Colo./Air Academy) defeated teammates Applegate and junior Kristen McClung (Charleston, W.Va./Charleston Catholic), 8-3, to claim the championship.

LEXINGTON, Va. -- The Washington and Lee women’s tennis team hosted the first day of the W&L Fall Festival on Saturday afternoon.

Washington and Lee juniors Emily Applegate (Charleston, S.C./Porter-Gaud) and Ginny Wortham (Richmond, Va./Collegiate) both advanced to the semifinals of the number one singles flight. In the quarterfinals, Applegate defeated Swathmore’s Jennie Park, 6-1, 6-1, while Wortham knocked off Amy Sheetz of Mary Washington, 6-0, 6-2.

The Generals had three players advance to the semifinals in the number two singles flight in junior Katie Kingsbury (Jenkintown, Pa./Philadelphia-Montgomery Christian), sophomore Leah Weston (Colorado Springs, Colo./Air Academy) and freshman Katie Tabb (Minneapolis, Minn./Edina). In the quarterfinals, Kingsbury beat Swarthmore’s Jamie Midyette, 6-3, 6-1, Weston defeated Carnegie Mellon’s Kelly Nakamura, 6-2, 6-0, and Tabb beat Mary Washington’s Natalie Fugate, 6-0, 6-2.

In number three singles flight, sophomores Kelly Will (Holly Springs, N.C./Cary Academy) and Rebecca Timmis (Peachtree City, Ga./McIntosh) both advanced to the semifinals. Will knocked off Anjalie Aggarwal of Swarthmore, 6-0, 6-0, in the quarterfinals, while Timmis defeated Swarthmore’s Marissa Lee, 6-1, 6-1.

Sophomore Katie Duncan (Baltimore, Md./Roland Park Country School) and freshman Tori Christmas (Richmond, Va./Collegiate) both advanced to the semifinals of the number four singles flight. In the quarterfinals, Duncan defeated Kate Malpeli of Mary Washington, 6-1, 6-2 and Christmas beat Asako Hayashi of Carnegie Mellon, 6-0, 6-1.

In the number one doubles flight, the pair of Applegate and junior Kristen McClung (Charleston, W.Va./Charleston Catholic) advanced to the finals where they will play the W&L duo of Weston and Wortham.

It will also be an all-W&L final in the number two doubles flight when the tandem of Christmas and Timmis take on the duo of Kingsbury and Will.

W&L'S APPLEGATE WINS SINGLES TITLE AT ITA SOUTHEAST REGION CHAMPIONSHIPS

FREDERICKSBURG, Va. -- Washington and Lee junior Emily Applegate (Charleston, S.C./Porter-Gaud) won the main singles draw championship at the ITA Southeast Region Championships hosted by Mary Washington on Monday.

Applegate, the number five seed, knocked off eighth-seeded Brittany Matava of Johns Hopkins, 6-0, 6-4 in the semifinals before defeating junior teammate and seventh-seeded Ginny Wortham (Richmond, Va./Collegiate), 6-3, 6-2 in the championship match. Wortham advanced to the finals with a 6-2, 6-7 (3), 6-2 win over third-seeded Kirsi Turunen of Averett in the semifinals.

Applegate also claimed the championship in the main doubles draw with junior Kristen McClung (Charleston, W.Va./Charleston Catholic). The top-seeded duo posted an 8-4 victory over the W&L pair of senior Lisa Mabry (Memphis, Tenn./St. Mary’s Episcopal) and freshman Katie Tabb (Minneapolis, Minn./Edina) in the finals.

In the consolation bracket of the main singles draw, junior Katie Kingsbury (Jenkintown, Pa./Philadelphia-Montgomery Christian) won the bracket with an 8-2 win over Mabry.

In the finals of the blue singles draw, sophomore Kelly Will (Holly Springs, N.C./Cary Academy) defeated classmate Katie Duncan (Baltimore, Md./Roland Park Country School), 5-7, 7-5, 6-4, to claim the title.
