W&L'S HAGERMAN WINS NCAA SINGLES CHAMPIONSHIP

KALAMAZOO, Mich. -- Washington and Lee senior Lindsay Hagerman (Wichita Falls, Texas/Highland Park) claimed the NCAA Division III Women’s Tennis Singles Championship on Monday afternoon in Kalamazoo, Mich.

Hagerman, the top seed, defeated second-seeded Liz Bondi of DePauw, 5-7, 6-3, 6-2, to become the first-ever W&L women’s tennis player to win the NCAA singles title. She ended the campaign with a single-season record of 37 wins (37-1).

The Generals also had two doubles teams advance to the semifinals of the NCAA Doubles Championship, but both were defeated by a duo from Gustavus Adolphus. Hagerman and sophomore Ginny Wortham (Richmond, Va./Collegiate), the top seed, lost 6-2, 5-7, 3-6 to Tara Houlihan and Lyndsey Palen. In the other semifinal match, W&L sophomores Emily Applegate (Charleston, S.C./Porter-Gaud) and Kristen McClung (Charleston, W.Va./Charleston Catholic) fell to Lauren Hom and Kara Smiley by a score of 6-2, 6-3.

With their appearances in the doubles semifinals, all four Generals earned All-America honors.

The Generals finished the season with a 22-1 record and advanced to the NCAA Championship match where they fell 5-3 to Emory University.

Hagerman, the top-seeded player in singles, knocked off fifth-seeded Jen Luten of Tufts, 6-1, 6-4 in the quarterfinals and Carnegie Mellon’s Amy Staloch, 6-0, 6-2, in the semifinals. Hagerman will face second-seeded Liz Bondi of DePauw for the title.

Hagerman and sophomore Ginny Wortham (Richmond, Va./Collegiate), the top seed in doubles, defeated the pair of Christy Austin and Laura Steinmetz of Trinity (Texas), 6-1, 6-1, in the quarterfinals. The duo will play Tara Houlihan and Lyndsey Palen of Gustavus Adolphus in the semifinals.

KALAMAZOO, Mich. -- Both of the Washington and Lee doubles teams advanced to the quarterfinals of the NCAA Division III Women’s Tennis Doubles Championships on Saturday afternoon in Kalamazoo, Mich., while senior Lindsay Hagerman (Wichita Falls, Texas/Highland Park) advanced to the quarterfinals of the NCAA Singles Championship.

Hagerman and sophomore Ginny Wortham (Richmond, Va./Collegiate), the top seed in doubles, defeated the pair of Sara Hughes and Allison Dunn of Colby, 6-3, 6-2 in the first round. Hagerman and Wortham will play the pair of Christy Austin and Laura Steinmetz of Trinity (Texas) in the quarterfinals.

The Generals’ other duo, sophomores Emily Applegate (Charleston, S.C./Porter-Gaud) and Kristen McClung (Charleston, W.Va./Charleston Catholic), posted a 6-2, 6-1 victory over Brandeis’ Abby Lerner and Colleen Donnelly in the first round. Hagerman, the top-seeded player in singles, knocked off Tara Houlihan of Gustavus Adolphus, 6-2, 6-2 in the first round and Muhlenberg’s Amy Schmidt, 6-1, 6-3, in the second round to earn All-America honors for the seventh time in her career. Hagerman will face fifth-seeded Jen Luten of Tufts in the quarterfinals.

In other singles action, Applegate lost to second-seeded Bondi, 6-2, 7-5 in the first round, while McClung fell to seventh-seeded Elizabeth Maclellen of Wheaton (Ill.), 6-3, 0-6, 1-6 in the first round.

The Generals return to the court on Sunday with the singles competition beginning at 9:00 am and the doubles action beginning at 3:00 pm.

W&L WOMEN’S TENNIS FALLS TO EMORY, 5-3, IN NCAA NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIP

KALAMAZOO, Mich. -- The top-seeded Washington and Lee women’s tennis team lost to Emory University by a score of 5-3 in the NCAA Division III Women’s Tennis National Championship match on Friday afternoon in Kalamazoo, Mich. With the win, the Eagles (20-3) claimed their third consecutive NCAA Championship. The Generals fell to 22-1.

W&L lost two of the three doubles matches to fall behind 2-1. At No. 1 doubles, Emory’s Carina Alberelli and Jamie Chan knocked off senior Lindsay Hagerman (Wichita Falls, Texas/Highland Park) and sophomore Ginny Wortham (Richmond, Va./Collegiate), 9-8 (3). W&L sophomores Kristen McClung (Charleston, W.Va./Charleston Catholic) and Emily Applegate (Charleston, S.C./Porter-Gaud) defeated Serena Burkard and Alexandra Gross, 8-4, at No. 2 doubles, while Indu Anand and Lindsay Tiemeyer won 8-2 at No. 3 doubles over senior Lora Farris (Dallas, Texas/Highland Park) and freshman Leah Weston (Colorado Springs, Colo./Air Academy).

W&L tied the match at 2-2 when Hagerman defeated Alberelli, 6-3, 6-2 at No. 1 singles. However, Emory won the next two singles matches to take a 4-2 lead. Anand knocked off sophomore Katie Kingsbury (Jenkintown, Pa./Philadelphia-Montgomery Christian), 6-3, 6-3 at No. 6 singles, while Chan bested Wortham 6-4, 6-3 at No. 4 singles. At No. 5 singles, Weston was trailing Linda Tien, 7-5, 4-4 when Tien pulled out of the match due to an injury to give Weston the win by default and pull W&L to within 4-3. However, Emory won the match when Ricelle Marasigan defeated McClung, 4-6, 6-2, 6-3 at No. 2 singles. Applegate was leading Burkard, 2-6, 6-1, 5-2 at No. 3 singles when Emory earned its fifth point to win the title.

With her singles win, Hagerman established a new single-season record for singles victories with 32.

This was the Generals third appearance in the NCAA National Championship match and they have lost all three matches to Emory. In its previous two title appearances in 1996 and 2003, W&L fell to the Eagles by identical 5-1 scores.

Hagerman, McClung, and Applegate will continue their season in the NCAA Singles Championship. In the NCAA Doubles Championship, Hagerman will partner with Wortham, while McClung will pair with Applegate. The first two rounds of singles play and the first round of the doubles will take place on Saturday.

W&L WOMEN’S TENNIS DEFEATS MIDDLEBURY, 5-3, IN NCAA SEMIFINALS

KALAMAZOO, Mich. -- The top-seeded Washington and Lee women’s tennis team battled back from a 3-0 deficit to defeat Middlebury, 5-3, in the semifinals of the NCAA Division III Women’s Tennis Championships on Thursday afternoon in Kalamazoo, Mich.

The Generals (22-0) fell in all three doubles matches to begin the contest. At No. 1 doubles, the duo of Jackie Ross and Claire Smyser knocked off senior Lindsay Hagerman (Wichita Falls, Texas/Highland Park) and sophomore Ginny Wortham (Richmond, Va./Collegiate), 8-6. At No. 2 doubles, the pair of Amanda Berck and Amy Roche defeated sophomores Kristen McClung (Charleston, W.Va./Charleston Catholic) and Emily Applegate (Charleston, S.C./Porter-Gaud), 8-6, while Emily Holick and Maren Messing won 8-6 at No. 3 doubles over senior Lora Farris (Dallas, Texas/Highland Park) and freshman Leah Weston (Colorado Springs, Colo./Air Academy).

W&L responded by winning the first five singles matches to take the victory. Hagerman defeated Roche, 6-1, 6-0 at No. 1 singles, while McClung bested Ross, 6-2, 4-6, 6-2 at No. 2 singles. At No. 3 singles, Applegate knocked off Berck, 6-2, 6-2 and Wortham defeated Smyser, 6-4, 6-4 at No. 4 singles. Weston bested Holick, 7-6 (5), 2-6, 6-3 at No. 5 singles to win the match for the Generals. Sophomore Katie Kingsbury (Jenkintown, Pa./Philadelphia-Montgomery Christian) had her match called at No. 6 singles after W&L had secured enough points to win the match.

With the win, the Generals advance to their third national championship match. W&L also played for the national title in 1996 and 2003, but lost to Emory both years by a score of 5-1.

The Generals return to the court on Friday when they play Emory for the NCAA National Championship at 2:00 pm.

W&L WOMEN'S TENNIS WINS ODAC CHAMPIONSHIP

HOLLINS, Va. -- The Washington and Lee women’s tennis team won its 14th ODAC Championship in the last 15 years by taking all six singles flights and all three doubles flights in the three-day tournament hosted by Hollins University.

The Generals totaled 72 points and were followed by Emory & Henry (36), Randolph-Macon (35), Hollins (32.5), Roanoke (27.5), Sweet Briar (25.0), Bridgewater (24.5), Virginia Wesleyan (21.0), Lynchburg (9.5), Eastern Mennonite (7.5), Guilford (6.5) and Randolph-Macon Woman’s (1.0).

Senior Lindsay Hagerman (Wichita Falls, Texas/Highland Park) was named the ODAC Player of the Year and ODAC Women’s Tennis Scholar-Athlete of the Year after winning the championship at No. 1 singles and doubles. Hagerman knocked off Randolph-Macon’s Elizabeth Kristofak in the singles final, 6-0, 6-1. She then teamed with sophomore Ginny Wortham (Richmond, Va./Collegiate) to win the doubles title with a 6-0, 6-1 win over Hollins’ Barret Jones and Melissa James. With her three singles wins in the tournament, Hagerman established a new school record for career victories (109), eclipsing the mark of 107 held by Ericka Shapard ‘98. Her three doubles wins also tied her with Erika Proko ‘03 for the all-time mark in career doubles victories (104).

Sophomore Kristen McClung (Charleston, W.Va./Charleston Catholic) claimed the No. 2 singles title with a 6-3, 6-0 win over Trista McGlothin of Emory & Henry, then teamed with sophomore Emily Applegate (Charleston, S.C./Porter-Gaud) to defeat Bridgewater’s Hiliary Teeter and Diana Ricker for the No. 2 doubles title with a 6-3, 6-0 win.

Applegate won the third singles flight with a 6-1, 6-0 victory over Teeter, while Wortham won the fourth singles bracket with a 6-0, 6-0 win over Hollins’ Candice Dalton in the finals.

Freshman Leah Weston (Colorado Springs, Colo./Air Academy) defeated Emory & Henry’s Anne Ryan, 6-0, 6-1, to claim the No. 5 singles title, then combined with senior Lora Farris (Dallas, Texas/Highland Park) to win the No. 3 doubles title with a 6-1, 6-0 win over E&H’s Stacie Blevins and Anne Ryan.

At No. 6 singles, sophomore Katie Kingsbury (Jenkintown, Pa./Philadelphia-Montgomery Christian) completed the sweep with a 6-0, 6-0 victory over Randolph-Macon’s Jessica Bayne in the championship match.

All seven players for the Generals earned ODAC All-Tournament and All-ODAC honors.

Washington and Lee returns to action on May 7 in the opening round of the NCAA Women’s Tennis Championships.

At No. 6 singles, Kingsbury beat Emory & Henry’s Kate Childress, 6-0, 6-1, and will face Jessie Bayne of Randolph-Macon for the championship.

In quarterfinals doubles action, the duo of Hagerman and Wortham knocked off Kierra McMillian and Lisa Fanney of Virginia Wesleyan, 8-1, at No. 1 doubles. At No. 2 doubles, Applegate and McClung bested the pair of Megan McEwen and Amy Iden of Randolph-Macon, 8-3, while Weston and senior Lora Farris (Dallas, Texas/Highland Park) posted an 8-3 victory over Lynchburg’s Kathryn Andrews and Erica Seay at No. 3 doubles.

W&L'S HAGERMAN COMPETES AT ITA NATIONAL SMALL COLLEGE CHAMPIONSHIPS

FORT MYERS, Fla. -- Washington and Lee senior Lindsay Hagerman (Wichita Falls, Texas/Highland Park) lost in the finals of the Super Bowl at the 2004 ITA National Small College Championships hosted by Florida Gulf Coast University on Sunday.

Hagerman fell to NAIA champion, Larikah Russell of Southern Nazarene, 6-3, 6-2, in the championship match. Hagerman qualified for the Super Bowl after winning the Division III singles draw.

Hagerman now stands at 13-1 on the season.

FORT MYERS, Fla. -- Washington and Lee senior Lindsay Hagerman (Wichita Falls, Texas/Highland Park) won the Division III singles draw at the 2004 ITA National Small College Championships hosted by Florida Gulf Coast University on Saturday morning.

Hagerman, the top-seeded player in the tournament, downed Liz Bondi of DePauw University in the championship match, 6-3, 7-6 (5). She then took on the Division II champion, Jing Jing Liu of BYU-Hawaii, winning the match by default after trailing 3-6, 4-5 (40-0).

Hagerman will now look to complete the Super Bowl as she takes on Larikah Russell of Southern Nazarene, the NAIA Champion, on Sunday at 1:00 pm.

Hagerman, who earned ITA All-America honors based upon her performance over the weekend, improves to 13-0 on the season.

W&L WOMEN'S TENNIS HOSTS DAY TWO OF THE W&L FALL FESTIVAL

LEXINGTON, Va. -- Washington and Lee senior Lindsay Hagerman (Wichita Falls, Texas/Highland Park) was a double winner at the W&L women’s tennis Fall Festival hosted by the Generals on Saturday and Sunday.

Hagerman defeated Richelle Marasigan of Emory, 6-1, 6-1 in the championship match of the number one singles flight. In the final of the number one doubles flight, Hagerman and senior Lora Farris (Dallas, Texas/Highland Park) beat Jamie Chan and Linda Tien of Emory, 9-8 (3).

In the number four singles flight, freshman Catherine Rentschler (Hamilton, Ohio/Ursuline Academy) knocked off teammate, freshman Kelly Will (Holly Springs, N.C./Cary Academy), 6-4, 6-0, in the championship match. Freshman Rebecca Timmis (Peachtree City, Ga./McIntosh) defeated Mary Washington’s Allison Hazlett, 6-3, 6-1, to finish in third place.

W&L WOMEN'S TENNIS HOSTS W&L FALL FESTIVAL

LEXINGTON, Va. -- The Washington and Lee women’s tennis team is hosting the W&L Fall Festival on Saturday and Sunday.

Senior Lindsay Hagerman (Wichita Falls, Texas/Highland Park) advanced to the finals of the number one singles flight. Hagerman bested Serena Burkard of Emory, 5-7, 6-0, 6-0, and Amy Staloch of Carnegie Mellon, 6-3, 6-1, en route to the championship match where she will play Richelle Marasigan of Emory.

Freshmen Catherine Rentschler (Hamilton, Ohio/Ursuline Academy) and Kelly Will (Holly Springs, N.C./Cary Academy) will square off in the championship match of the number four singles flight. Rentschler knocked off Carnegie Mellon’s Grace Hwang, 6-1, 6-0, and fellow General, freshman Rebecca Timmis (Peachtree City, Ga./McIntosh), 6-5, 7-5. Will defeated a pair of foes from Mary Washington, Emily Brimer, 6-2, 6-1, and Allison Hazlett, 6-0, 6-3.

In the number one doubles flight, Hagerman and senior Lora Farris (Dallas, Texas/Highland Park) advanced to the finals where they will play the duo of Jamie Chan and Linda Tien of Emory. Hagerman and Farris defeated MaryWashington’s Katie Miglin and Gayle Smith, 8-5, and Mona Iyer and Staloch of Carnegie Mellon, 8-6.

The Generals will continue competing in the Fall Festival on Sunday beginning at 8:30 am.

W&L'S HAGERMAN EARNS SINGLES TITLE AT ITA SOUTHEAST REGION CHAMPIONSHIPS

FREDERICKSBURG, Va. -- Senior Lindsay Hagerman (Wichita Falls, Texas/Highland Park), of the Washington and Lee women’s tennis team, captured the main draw singles championship for the second consecutive year at the ITA Southeast Region Championship hosted by the University of Mary Washington on Monday afternoon.

Hagerman, the top-seeded player in the tournament, knocked off third-seeded Mona Iyer of Carnegie Mellon, 6-1, 6-0, in the semifinals before defeating fellow General, sophomore Kristen McClung (Charleston, W. Va./Charleston Catholic), 6-1, 6-0, in the championship match. McClung advanced to the final after defeating second-seeded Amy Staloch of Carnegie Mellon, 0-6, 6-3, 6-0, in the semifinals.

In the final of the main draw doubles, Hagerman and senior Lora Farris (Dallas, Texas/Highland Park) lost to the duo of Iyer and Staloch, 8-6.

In B-draw singles action, freshman Catherine Rentschler (Hamilton, Ohio/Ursuline Academy) was defeated by Mary Washington’s Emily Brimer, 7-6 (7-5), 6-4, in the semifinals.

In B-draw doubles play, W&L had two teams advance to the championship match. Freshman Kelly Will (Holly Springs, N.C./Cary Academy) and sophomore Amanda Haines (Eden, N.C./N.C. Science & Math) will square off against the freshmen duo of Rebecca Timmis (Peachtree City, Ga./McIntosh) and Leah Weston (Colorado Springs, Colo./Air Academy) at practice on Tuesday.

Hagerman advanced to the ITA Small College National Championship to be held on the campus of Florida Gulf Coast University in Fort Myers, Fla. from Oct. 14-17.

Hagerman, the top-seeded player in the tournament, defeated Haverford’s Laura Chaddock, 6-2, 6-2, in the round of 16, and Sonya Reynolds of Swarthmore, 6-1, 6-0, in the quarterfinals. McClung defeated two teammates en route to the semifinals. She beat freshman Kelly Will (Holly Springs, N.C./Cary Academy), 6-1, 6-2, in the round of 16, then beat sixth-seeded sophomore Ginny Wortham (Richmond, Va./Collegiate), 6-7 (7-2), 7-5, 6-4 in the quarterfinals.

In main draw doubles action, the top-seeded duo of Hagerman and senior Lora Farris (Dallas, Texas/Highland Park) advanced to the finals after they beat Erika Mitra and Jen Rosler of Salisbury, 8-1, in the quarterfinals and General teammates, freshmen Catherine Rentschler (Hamilton, Ohio/Ursuline Academy) and Heather Ribas (Waxhaw, N.C./The Hill School), 8-3, in the semifinals.

In B-draw singles action, Rentschler advanced to the semifinals by defeating Carnegie Mellon’s Kavita Shah, 6-0, 6-1, in the round of 16 and Tanya Gulnik of Johns Hopkins, 6-2, 6-2, in the quarterfinals.

In B-draw doubles play, W&L had two teams advance to the quarterfinals. Will and sophomore Amanda Haines (Eden, N.C./N.C. Science & Math) will play Jennifer Adkins and Emily Olsen from Hollins. The freshmen pair of Rebecca Timmis (Peachtree City, Ga./McIntosh) and Leah Weston (Colorado Springs, Colo./Air Academy) will take on the duo of Shah and Ann Kozlowski from Carnegie Mellon.

In the consolation of the singles draw, Ribas captured the championship with an 8-0 victory over Barbara Bee of Franklin and Marshall.

In Monday’s main-draw singles semifinal match-up, Hagerman will play third-seeded Mona Iyer of Carnegie Mellon and McClung competes against second-seeded Amy Staloch of Carnegie Mellon. Hagerman and Farris are slated to take on fourth-seeded Iyer and Staloch in the main-draw doubles final.
