INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. — The National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) announced on Wednesday the individuals who will compete in the singles and doubles competition of the 2014 NCAA Division III Men's and Women's Tennis Championships.
The Washington and Lee men's team received one qualifier for doubles, while the W&L women's squad garnered one competitor in the singles competition and one duo in doubles.
For the men, the Generals' No. 1 duo of junior Taylor Shamshiri (Austin, Texas/ATA College Prep) and sophomore Michael Holt (Henrico, Va./Mills Godwin), made the 16-team field. The combo are the region's second-ranked tandem, and have compiled a 21-4 record this season. Shamshiri and Holt advanced all the way to the semifinals of the 2013 doubles championship to earn All-America honors.
On the women's side, junior Sonja Meighan (McLean, Va./Flint Hill) was selected to the 32-player singles field, while Meighan and junior Patricia Kirkland (Charleston, S.C./Ashley Hall) made the 16-team doubles field.
Meighan has produced a 21-2 singles record this year and is ranked second in the Atlantic South Region. In doubles, she and Kirkland are 17-4 overall and ranked fifth regionally. Last year, they advanced all the way to the semifinals to earn All-America laurels.
The selection of teams and individuals for the championships are based on win-loss record, strength of schedule and eligibility and availability of the student-athletes.
The team championship will take place May 19-21, and the individual championships May 22-24, both at Biszantz Family Tennis Center in Claremont, California, and will be hosted by Claremont McKenna-Harvey Mudd-Scripps Colleges.
The W&L men's squad begins the team championship on Friday when it hosts Catholic for a 2:00 pm match. The women play either Hanover or Sewanee on Saturday at 9:00 am at Emory in Atlanta.
