ODAC Announces Women's Tennis All-Conference Teams

FOREST, Va. – The Old Dominion Athletic Conference released it’s women’s tennis all-conference team on Thursday and Washington and Lee has several players honored, including the league’s Player of the Year and Coach of the Year. 

Junior Sonja Meighan (McLean, Va. / Flint Hill) was chosen as the ODAC Player of the Year, while Head Coach Erin Ness earned Coach of the Year honors after leading the Generals to their 12th straight conference title and a 17-2 record on the season. 

Seven others joined Meighan on the all-conference list for singles and doubles. On the first team for singles were senior Chelsea Mixson (Beaufort, S.C. / Hilton Head Prep), junior Meghan Buell (New Albany, Ohio / New Albany), sophomore Mary Elizabeth Shutley (Marietta, Ga. / Marist School), along with first-years Brooke Donnelly (Kennesaw, Ga. / Marietta) and Aalekhya Tenali (Melbourne, Fla. / West Shore). Additionally, senior Claire Cahill (Austin, Texas / Lake Travis) and junior Patricia Kirkland (Charleston, S.C. / Ashley Hall) were honored for doubles play. 

Meighan collected Player of the Year honors for the third-consecutive year after claiming a 21-2 overall record in singles and a 20-4 mark in doubles this campaign. Earlier this season, she won the ITA Southeast Regional Championship in both singles and doubles to earn ITA All-America accolades. She is currently ranked second in the Atlantic South region in singles and teams up with Kirkland to rank second in the region in doubles.

At No. 2 singles, Buell also garnered first team accolades after finishing the season with a 13-5 overall singles mark and was 7-0 in league action. When teaming up with Mixson at No. 2 doubles, she went 17-3 on the year, including an unblemished 8-0 mark in ODAC action.  

Donnelly was named to the first team at both No. 3 singles and No. 3 doubles, recording a 15-3 singles and 15-2 doubles mark overall. Earlier this season, she was named ODAC Player of the Week for her play against Lynchburg and Sweet Briar.

A first team selection last season, Mixson garnered the recognition at No. 4 singles and No. 2 doubles. She went 13-4 overall in singles this year, while claiming an 18-3 record in doubles.

Shutley garnered first team all-conference accolades for the first time at No. 5 singles after going 12-3 overall and 7-0 in conference play this year.

At No. 6 singles, Tenali also garnered her first all-conference laurel with a 6-4 singles record on the year and a 4-0 ODAC mark. She also went 8-2 in doubles play.

Cahill garnered first team all-conference accolades for the second consecutive year at No. 3 doubles. She registered a 14-2 overall record in doubles with a perfect 7-0 mark in the conference when partnering with Donnelly.

The 2013 ODAC/Farm Bureau Scholar Athlete, Kirkland was awarded her third first-team honors at No. 1 doubles. When partnering with Meighan, she has recorded a 17-4 record and captured the ITA Southeast Regional Doubles Championship to earn All-America status. She also went 5-1 in singles play this season. 

Emory & Henry’s Stella Di Michele was named the Rookie of the Year and Molly Barb from Shenandoah earned the ODAC/Farm Bureau Scholar Athlete of the Year award.

The 20th-ranked Generals claimed the program’s 24th ODAC title, earning an automatic bid to the Division III NCAA Tournament, which will begin on May 9 at selected on-campus sites. The NCAA will release the team selections on May 5 at 7:00 pm on NCAA.com and the individual selections on May 7 at 7:00 pm on NCAA.com.
