W&L Women's Tennis Competes in Day One of NCAA Tournament

CLAREMONT, Calif. – The Washington and Lee women's tennis team had two competitors in action on day one of the NCAA Division III Individual Tournament on Thursday, hosted by Claremont Mudd Scripps.

Junior Sonja Meighan (McLean, Va. / Flint Hill) competed in singles competition, while Meighan partnered with junior Patricia Kirkland (Charleston, S.C. / Ashley Hall) to represent the Generals in the doubles pool.

Meighan started out the day defeating Oberlin's Brenna Sheldon, 7-6, 7-6, and advanced to the round of 16. She then took down Carley Cooke from Brandeis, 6-1, 6-0, to move on to the quarterfinal round.

Kirkland and Meighan were knocked out of the tournament after they suffered a 6-4, 6-3 loss to the team of Rachel Fox and Andrea Hammer from Chapman in the round of 16.

Meighan will begin competition at 10:30 am tomorrow, as she faces Kathleen Elkins from Williams.
