W&L Women's Tennis in Action at the ITA Southeast Regionals
LEXINGTON, Va. – The Washington and Lee women's tennis team began competition at the ITA Southeast Regional Tournament on Saturday, hosted by Mary Washington.
In the Championship Draw, three different Generals advanced to the round of 32 after defeating their opponents in the round of 64.
Junior Meghan Buell (New Albany, Ohio/New Albany) defeated Jackie Gaine from CNU, 6-0, 6-1 and will take on Caitlin Delmas from SBC tomorrow. Kelsey Vella (Sussex, N.J./Blair Academy) took down Katie Youlios from SU by a score of 6-3, 7-6 (4) and will play Anglea Pratt from CMU tomorrow. Chelsea Mixson (Beaufort, S.C./Hilton Head Prep) also recorded a first round victory, taking down Katie Carlson from CNU, 6-2, 6-1.
In the Championship Doubles Draw, three pairs competed for the Generals, with each team advancing. Sonja Meighan (McLean, Va./Flint Hill) and Patricia Kirkland (Charleston, S.C./Ashley Hall) took down the pair of Gyeyeon Kang and April Weaver, 8-3, in the round of 32. Also in that round, the duo of Buell and Mixson defeated Amanda Bercovici and Kirsten Cianci, 8-2, and teammates Claire Cahill and Brooke Donnelly downed Jody Law and Kaitlin Pfisterer, 8-6.
The team of Genny Francis (Raleigh, N.C./Ravenscroft) and Aalekhya Tenali (Melbourne, Fla./West Shore) defeated Emily Evans and Marielle McIntyre, 8-2, competing in the Blue 1 Doubles Draw. Mary Elizabeth Shutley (Marietta, Ga./Marist School) and teammate Vella also competed in the Blue 1 Doubles Draw and defeated Kelsey Grice and Caty-Betz Holcomb, 8-1.
The Generals return to the court on Sunday, when they continue competition at the ITA Southeast Regional Championships.
