FOREST, Va. – The Old Dominion Athletic Conference released its 2013 Women's Tennis Preseason Poll and Washington and Lee was chosen to finish first in the league.
The Generals collected 121 points and 11 first-place votes to sit atop the poll results. Virginia Wesleyan was tabbed second with 99 points and the final first-place vote, while Hollins tallied 95 points to sit third. Roanoke (93), Bridgewater (85), Guilford (72), Randolph (59), Randolph-Macon (47), Emory & Henry (36), Shenandoah (31), Lynchburg (28) and Sweet Briar (26) rounded out the poll.
W&L finished its 2012 campaign with a 20-6 overall record, and registered a perfect 10-0 mark in conference action to claim the program's 10th consecutive ODAC Championship. The team fell to Emory in the third round of the NCAA Tournament, 5-2, and sent one individual to the NCAA Singles Championships.
Meighan was named the ODAC Rookie and Player of the Year, and the Atlantic Southeast Region Rookie of the Year after notching a 21-7 mark in singles play and an 18-5 doubles record. She was the 2011 ITA Southeast Region Singles Champion and advanced to the NCAA Division III Singles Tournament quarterfinals, earning All-America laurels. Last season, Buell recorded an 11-3 mark in singles and 21-4 in doubles en route to collecting First Team All-ODAC honors for doubles. In the fall, she won the ITA Southeast Region Singles and Doubles titles, entering the season ranked second in the region for both singles and doubles.
Other key returners include senior Sallie Griffin (Warrenton, Va./Highland School), junior Claire Cahill (Austin, Texas/Austin), and sophomores Patricia Kirkland (Charleston, S.C./Ashley Hall) and Allison Hupalo (Weston, Mass./Weston).
Griffin notched first team all-conference accolades after recording a 12-5 mark in singles action and a 6-1 doubles record on the year. Doubles partner Hupalo was also First Team All-ODAC and went 16-4 in singles and 6-1 in doubles. The duo are currently ranked 15th in the region.
Cahill teamed up with Buell in the fall to claim the ITA Southeast Region Doubles Championship and take runner-up at the ITA National Small College Championships. Last season, Cahill ended the year 2-0 in singles action and 2-0 in doubles. She sits 11th in singles in the region and second in doubles with teammate Buell.
An All-ODAC First Team honoree, Kirkland finished 2012 with a 15-5 singles mark and a 17-6 doubles record. The duo of Meighan and Kirkland are ranked ninth in the region.
The Generals kick off their spring season on Friday, February 15, when they host Radford for a 3:00 pm contest.
