FREDERICKSBURG, Va. – The Washington and Lee women's tennis team wrapped up its first competition of the season on Sunday at the UMW Kickoff Classic, hosted by Mary Washington.
Junior Claire Cahill (Austin, Texas/Lake Travis) recorded the Generals' highest individual placing for the weekend, taking second in Flight B after losing to Sophie Panarese from Georgetown in the championship round.
In Flight A, sophomore Sonja Meighan (McLean, Va./Flint Hill) recorded a third-place finish, winning her match over Kelly Comolli from Georgetown. Seniors Kerry Cotter (Easley, S.C./Wren) and Jen Hall (Metairie, La./Metairie) also notched third place in Flight D and Flight E, respectively. Cotter took down Flood from Mary Washington and Hall defeated teammate Laura Simmons (Phoenix, Md./Bryn Mawr).
Senior Christina Douglas (Fayetteville, N.Y./Manlius Pebble Hill) collected fourth place in Flight C after losing to Weinberg from Mary Washington.
In doubles, Meighan and sophomore Patricia Kirkland (Charleston, S.C./Ashley Hall) claimed second place in the top flight, first beating the duo of Lindsay Raulston and Weinberg from UMW and later falling to Comolli and Liz Hamlin from Georgetown in the championship match.
Sophomore Meghan Buell (New Albany, Ohio/New Albany) and Cahill teamed up to finish right behind in third place in Flight A. The pair lost to Camolli and Hamlin, but defeated Victoria Sekely and Madeline Jaeger of Georgetown.
In Flight C of doubles, Simmons and Douglas went 1-1 on the day, taking a win over Suyama and Price of Mary Washington, and dropping a match to Andrea Londen and Erdenesuren Erdenebat from George Mason.
W&L returns to action on Saturday when it heads back to Fredericksburg to compete at the ITA Southeast Regional Championships, set to begin at 8:00 am.
