W&L Women's Tennis Opens Play at UMW Kickoff Classic

FREDERICKSBURG, Va. – The Washington and Lee women's tennis team opened its 2012-13 season with action at the UMW Kickoff Classic, hosted by Mary Washington, on Saturday.

Junior Claire Cahill (Austin, Texas/Lake Travis) highlighted the day with two individual wins, allowing her to advance to the Flight B finals tomorrow. Cahill took down Madeline Jaeger from Georgetown in the first round and then defeated Vanja Andonova from Delaware State in the semifinal round.

Seniors Christina Douglas (Fayetteville, N.Y./Manlius Pebble Hill), Kerry Cotter (Easley, S.C./Wren), Jen Hall (Metairie, La./Metairie Park Country Day) and Laura Simmons (Phoenix, Md./Bryn Mawr) and sophomore Sonja Meighan (McLean, Va./Flint Hill) each recorded a win in the first round, but were defeated in the semis.

In Flight A, Meighan knocked out Ashley Delaney from Georgetown and later lost to Georgetown teammate Victoria Sekely. Sophomore Meghan Buell (New Albany, Ohio/New Albany) was taken out in the first round of the top flight by Kelly Comolli from Georgetown.

Douglas saw a win in the first round of Flight C, defeating Mackenzie Smith from Mary Washington and then losing to Taylor Perz from Georgetown. First-year Mary Elizabeth Shutley also competed in Flight C, but was defeated by Liz Hamlin from Georgetown in the first round.

Cotter defeated Nora Montgomery from Georgetown in the first round of Flight D and lost to Erdenesuren Erdenbat from George Mason in the semis.

In Flight E, Hall and Simmons took down Anna Richman and Michaela Dowd, respectively, from UMW. Both lost to George Mason players in the second round of play.

In doubles action, Cahill teamed up with Buell in Flight A to defeat Lincolnton and Maya Hicks from George Mason. Also in Flight A, Meighan and sophomore Patricia Kirkland (Charleston, S.C./Ashley Hall) topped the pair of Sekely and Jaeger from Georgetown.

Shutley and Cotter dropped their match to UMW's Harrison and Smith in Flight B of doubles, while Simmons and Douglas claimed a win over Manda Martin and Dowd from UMW in Flight C.

The Generals return to action on Sunday, when they compete in Day Two of the UMW Kickoff Classic, set to begin at 8:00 am.
